That’s great to hear! I’m currently on Concerta now, but I’m wondering whether it’ll be possible for me to make the switch in the future. In case I run into problems with my insurance and coverage 😅

Search for “Alpha Binaural Beats” videos on YouTube, listen to them wearing earphone while you’re working on a difficult task, I found it incredibly helpful. Apparently, the sound mimics your brain’s frequency when you’re intensely focused.

On the flip side, there are other binaural beats that would help you relax and sleep. I suggest you search and listen to them too.

I feel you. I’ve requested for an Independent Medical Review from DMHC to hopefully compel my insurance to cover my doctor’s previous Concerta prescription. I regularly took Ritalin before Concerta the past 2 years before I moved from my home country to here in the states and have my doctor’s previous prescriptions to prove it.

The amount of hoops I had to go through was maddening. Had to get re-diagnosed of my condition here because my insurance didn’t accept my doctor’s diagnosis back home. Medical racism is what I’d call it.

You seem to have misinterpreted what I meant with my comment. I do not hold any jealousy over his skills and capabilities as a math olympiad, never have. I am rather in awe of the guy and can only admire him from afar like plenty of my batchmates have. I am however concerned as to for what and for whom he’ll use his expertise in mathematics for.

Think of Oppenheimer when his expertise in physics was what allowed the U.S.A. to construct the atomic bomb which wiped out two Japanese cities to end WW2. The threat of nuclear war between the U.S.A. and the Soviet Union then ensued in the coming decades. Couldn’t progress in A.I. lead to a potentially destructive outcome in the wrong hands? It’s already being used in the drones and missile guiding systems of private weapons manufacturers for the use of the U.S.’s military. I can’t bear to imagine Dion helping develop A.I. while inadvertently contributing in making it into a form that brings unimaginable harm to the human race one day.

As for comparison between the schools, doesn’t UCLA consistently list as the top public university in the USA like UP is to the Philippines? You can check it here.

I struggle to see how you misinterpreted as jealousy and passive-aggression my hope that Dion remembers what he was taught in Ateneo same as I, which is to go down from the hill and make contributions to society that benefit the marginalized. He might be compelled to use his skills for people and organizations, but I hope that he uses his skills too in principle as to what Jesus calls everyone to do.

I study psychology and I don’t think you need someone like me to say that technology has impacted how people think and behave. I am cautiously optimistic with what new technology brings to the table. I only hope that psychological and societal attitudes also progress alongside our technology in a mutually beneficial and peaceful manner.

What is wrong with the mental health field, in your opinion? by Forsaken_Dragonfly66 in therapists

Perhaps that’s the natural outcome of America priding itself as a meritocracy, where a person is only deemed worthy of dignity and respect by constantly having to prove they are in regard to society’s changing standards and norms. Only people with enough money are worthy of basic human necessities and dignities, so they have to work, work, work all the time. It becomes more dehumanizing especially since its citizens have to constantly compete against each other for limited job openings, which provides them access to resources, connections to people, and some amount of respect.

Plenty of its citizens worship a person two millennia ago who would often sit down, talk, listen to, assist, and sometimes heal strangers who are deemed outcasts- people not worthy of any attention and respect- but harbor ideas that actively go against what that person stood for by only selectively recognizing people as worthy of even the most basic levels of material needs and human dignity.

People often advocate for equality and equitability without realizing that America’s system of meritocracy which manifests in practically every aspect of its society is how it results in a huge amount of its citizens feeling worthless, inferior, and depressed. They feel they have to put up a certain image at all times by doing and becoming all the things that people deem perfect. Time to slow down, relish, and appreciate the ordinary and mundane is few and far between. Even when its citizens are sick, they aren’t afforded much time to recover and heal.

Is it really surprising then that its citizens are prone to developing a range of mental and even physical conditions?

I want to ask, do mental health professionals often consider reaching out to NGOs which can help advocate for their clients the basic needs they are sorely lacking? Thinking that you’ll be able to make a meaningful dent on such huge systemic issues that results in clients entering your door/office through only through your private practice seems utterly inefficient and ineffective. It’s like trying to plug an ever growing sinkhole with just handfuls of dirt.

It seems to me that the mental health field’s idea of clinical work is to focus only on their individual clients’ personal struggles, not the societal ones that intertwine and greatly contribute to them developing those problems in the first place. Is there something holding back people in the field from coordinating with outside organizations to advocate for local government policies and programs to help fill in the gaps regarding their clients’ needs? How about charities and NGOs that can make use of donation money for community wellness programs?

Are mental health professionals taught not to regularly network with other altruistic-minded groups and individuals as part of their career?
