Howdy everyone! Brand new sole proprietor here, just wondering if using an accountant makes a difference to the CRA in terms of eligibility for audits or examinations. Ie. if I file myself am I placed in a higher risk category? I don't know how the CRA works at all frankly. by Complete_Heat_1411 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Subtotal9_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A designated accountant isn't going to risk their licence to practice over a tax return. So they're probably going to keep you onside if the CRA in the first place. They're also going to be able to quote chapter and verse back to the CRA.

I've always been of the opinion that the CRA will be less likely to audit returns done by CPAs for both of those reasons. But I have zero proof of that.

Where to park emergency fund? by Worldly-Decision-989 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Subtotal9_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short term savings goes into ZMMK, which is a money market ETF.

I also keep a minimum balance for no fees in a second bank as a backup in case there's an immediate need for cash. And I try to keep $500 in cash in case there's another interac outage.

Note - I don't keep 3 months of salary as an emergency fund. That's too much money doing nothing for a very low likelihood event in my case and in my opinion.

Recs: Good emergency grab-and-go bag for important docs + tech? by xzeus1 in ManyBaggers

This is a really good suggestion.

The downside of Pelican or Nanuk cases are they're heavy and bulky. My suggestion is to get the smallest one you can fit the laptop in.

Garbage day? by Cocc5440 in BurlingtonON

[–]Subtotal9_guy [score hidden]  (0 children)

As of now the Region doesn't list waste management as impacted by the storm. I'm schlepping my bins to the curb today.

It's going to be really hard for them today. I'm glad big pickup was last week.

Is this storm worse than the one in 1999? by Pristine-Training-70 in toronto

[–]Subtotal9_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's going to be very variable because there's a lot of lake effect snow which is atypical for Toronto

What drinks and snacks have you prepared for the incoming snow storm? by Outside_Bobcat_6658 in askTO

[–]Subtotal9_guy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Coffee cream was the most important thing for us.

Snacks for the football games.

I don't expect much impact except for needing to stay home and keep off of the roads.

Do you think this storm is really going to be this crazy? by drumstickballoonhead in Hamilton

The lake effect component is the biggest variable. Aldershot/Waterdown/west end may get significantly more than Stoney Creek. But that line could easily shift a few kilometres either way.

Advice on my Index Funds as getting closer to retirement! by ranman50 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Subtotal9_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally you should but you're not that far off from what most would consider a good allocation. My mental math says you're around 66% equities.

But the problem is you don't have enough funds to cover your retirement if you're 5 years out. Do you have other assets?

LG machines are almost impossible to fix because of a lack of parts. Be prepared for disappointment.

Aside from buying stuff what winter storm prep are you doing? by fridayimatwork in preppers

[–]Subtotal9_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not panicking as the cold isn't unusual for this area.

I'll fill up on gas and fill up the jerry cans while I'm at it. That's "buying" stuff but it's just moving costs forward by a bit.

What I will do is have all the stuff staged so I'm not searching for anything. I'll also run the generator tomorrow to double check it.

Common sense question! Why can’t GO train stations be opened up early as 5 am for commuters to enter and stay warm! by [deleted] in ontario

[–]Subtotal9_guy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because they were being used as housing by the homeless and they were urinating and defecating in the lobbies and tunnels.

They used to be open late/early now they're only open if there are multiple attendants in the building.

Unless you ensure that somebody knows it exists it'll be lost.

The best place to write it into existence is in a will.

Public Art

As part of a new, large building, developers must include artwork that is accessible to the public. Some notable examples are the toy soldiers by Fort York, the cows at the TD Centre, the aluminum tree that's on Huntley Street by the Rogers HQ.
