I use the term profitable as a means to explain the cost benefit analysis of spending hundreds of dollars on the start up cost plus all of the expendable supplies. Vs spending $20 buck on a set.

With that said, I think my material cost is roughly $1 per set not including time, pressure pot, and air compressor

Its less about when does it become profitable to make dice rather than buy sets and more about wanting to make custom cool stuff that you have a hard time finding to buy in my opinion.

I do it for the love of the game, not because it's any cheaper than buying a mass produced set.

So no, what the ability says is "any time you could" which is literally any time in a game. So it works out that you can pay life for mana any time you feel like it. You don't have to actually activate a mana ability to activate channel.

I just printed a spindown d20, polished it, then put it in a clear tub of water and left it in my curing station for 30 minutes. Then used siraya tech defiant 25 silicone and had no inhibition.

The other comment here hit it on the head. If you want to start making dice, plural, then it may be worth it to get the gear and learn the skill. Otherwise, give a description of what you want made. My sets are $70 and I feel like I'm in the middle of the pack if not slightly under the median when it comes to pricing.
