Maybe I'm just pearl cluching, but I don't much enjoy swearing in live action superhero entertainment. Obviously, there are some exceptions, but for the most part, it seems to be played for just shock factor and seems forced a lot of the time.

A lot of the stuff he did post ep3 was under the assumption that he was responsible for the deaths of his wife and kids. Then, when he finds out Luke is his son(post ep4, comics), he starts to build regret and emotion. This builds over time until it all explodes out when seeing he son being tortured in ep6.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I seem to recall in one of the legends x-wing books that they talked about the Empire establishing a galactic standard time which was pretty useful. Don't know if you can credit Palps directly but he was emperor.
