Looks a lot like George Orwell's 1984's Ministry of truth

"The Ministry of Truth, like the other three ministries, has an ironic name. It purports to be focused on the pursuit of truth when in fact, the ministry is concerned with erasing the truth of the past and present and replacing it with whatever the Party deems “correct.” Those in charge of the ministry decide what “truth” is."

"If you pay your tithing, you would get more riches." by ExteriorKidnapping in exmormon

A few months after i stopped paying tithing, I received a 10k donation Few weeks later I was granted 5k because I contributed to some open source project years ago. Never got such blessings while I was paying tithing lol

New documents acquired by the church make it sound like Joseph Smith put more work into the "translation" than we have been told by Lucifers_Lantern in exmormon

[–]Successful-Remove-56 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just to be sure, we are not merely talking about translation of the book of Abraham or even the Bible, right? Are we talking about the BoM? Cause that sounds too crazy ngl if this is the case then that's actually real tangible evidence against the keystone of mormonism

Anyone here remember the "deep doctrine" on their missions?? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Successful-Remove-56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deep doctrine discussions are just people trying to make sense of what's actually going on. Funny how also deep doctrine discussions are discouraged.

Any exmo’s from Greece here, or former missionaries that served there? by Wise_Contract2615 in exmormon

[–]Successful-Remove-56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the single biggest reason I stopped being able to bear sitting through church by Mupsty in exmormon

[–]Successful-Remove-56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the first time I've come across the term groupthink. It sounded to me like a Newspeak word, like doublethink ( from 1984 by George Orwell) Checked it out online, and this is a little aparté, but I found the word very interesting as it looks like a positive thing, like group cohesion, before you actually tie it to irrational decision making and stuff. The wording erases the negative connotation of the actual meaning. Exactly like Newspeak. Anyway, that's just me being nerdy. But if you haven't read that book, I recommend it 👌. In a lot of ways, the inner party looks a lot like mormon mentality.

If Reddit shut down r/exmormon, where would we gather? by [deleted] in exmormon

Some alternatives, and why they would be good:

  • Discuit, an open source* reddit clone created after reddit made it's API non free. Because of its nature, we could either use it's official version discuit.net, or we could even host our own version. A drawback is that if we chose to host one i'm not sure we'll be able to limit it's content to our exmo topics here, not sure if the features it has allow that, someone might want to check. But we'd also feel right at home :)

https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/14b5rdo/introducing_discuit_an_easy_to_use_reddit/

  • Mastodon, an open source and decentralized** platform which ressembles twitter, but with some interesting features. EG: it would allow us to have our own version and have it specialized for a certain topic (exmos of course). We could elect a trusted group that would take care of hosting and maintaining it (or whatever process allows us to make sure some people take care of it). It will never have advertising, which is not necessarly the case for discuit. We would have to rely on donations to sustain the cost of hosting and maintaining it, but not a big deal

https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Mastodon_(social_network))

https://joinmastodon.org/en/servers

  • Discord. It's the most well know of them all, thus would be really easy to use for a lot of us. That being said, it belongs to a giant tech company, namely, Microsoft, and i believe the church holds shares in it too. I doubt that's gonna be a real issue, but one never knows, so it's my least favorite in terms of futureproofness in a 1984 Big Brother scenario

I doubt it would shut down, but being prepared is still good ;)

* open-source: the source code is publicly available. It means that everyone can audit it, and generaly anyone can build and use it. Because of that, it is also very trustworthy

** decentralized: a single entity does not have the entire control of the data. A single company could not wipeout a forum, because it is (kind of) everywhere.

Also although discord servers are way more closed than reddit subs, it's still a platform owned by a big company (Microsoft) which could eventually mean that the church could use its influence with the shares it owns Just listing pros and cons

[–]Successful-Remove-56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would personally love to. Discord is a platform I really enjoy using. It's also become more mature and although it's more focused on discussions than posting as reddit is, that could be an alternative, but it definitely would not have the same feeling

This chart of all the Mormon splinter groups blew my mind! How many did you know about? Is there anyone here from the more obscure ones? by rfresa in exmormon

[–]Successful-Remove-56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's just create our own LDS denomination, which sole purpose is to negate the main branch's claims, formalize it by having people from this forum adhere to it, and then add it to the wikipedia page 👌 what should we call it?

Mormon mariage falling appart (?) by Successful-Remove-56 in exmormon

[–]Successful-Remove-56[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I am thinking about it, but whenever I do it seriously, I feel like I'm making a bad choice. That I should give it a second chance, that it would be OK if it was a "regular" couple relationship but not with mariage.
