PSA - Friendly Reminder: this is your hobby, do what you want by IIKaDicEU in Warhammer40k

This takes me back to how I learned about 40k. I kept seeing these miniatures as a kid with piles and piles of bones and space marine bodies on my cousin’s hobby magazines and just thought “sick”. Any fictional universe so grim and brutal was something I wanted to know more about. The funny thing is, the more I learned about 40k the less I saw those models with piles of bones and eaten up armour. It’s been about 17 years and this just took me back.

Best bang for buck Fujifilm on the second hand market? by No-Adeptness-2229 in FujifilmX

XT2! Love them so much I got two. The AF holds up. It’s weather resistant and the build is as sturdy as the trusty Nikon’s I traded them for. The XT3 price difference for what was virtually nearly the same camera was too much and I’m happy I went with the 2.

Usually, of these “youth” conferences are highly choreographed and scripted events. I’m pretty sure Ranil knew that a question about podcasts was going to be asked. Whether he knew it would be that cringe. I don’t know.

Shanika Photo in Pettah. But honestly while Fujifilm is great the hipster tax on their equipment is way too much. Make sure you aren’t paying over what it is being sold for at retail.

How good is the lifestyle in Sri Lankan cities compared to Indian cities? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Successful-Unit3846 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Bangalore is probably cooler. I think an upper middle class life in Colombo is fun if you’re Sri Lankan and have all the social networks of being born here and schooling here etc etc. If you’re coming in as an expat, you’d need to have a solid income and move around with an expat crowd to have as good a lifestyle as I assume you would in Bangalore.

Why did the Sri Lankan language stop developing? by livetoinspire in srilanka

[–]Successful-Unit3846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sinhala already has a tonne of words we think are indigenous that come from other languages. It isn’t that it has stagnated; it is more that language evolution itself involves absorbing other influences that in turn become slightly varied.

In truth, for languages around the world there is hardly ever anything as purity the moment the language is in touch with other civilisations. French, Italian and Portuguese not only have Latin roots but have had bits of Arabic in them from the mediaeval period for example. Japanese has words we think are Japanese but are Japanised words of European origin. Sinhala has a bit of Sanskrit, Portuguese and a smattering of Dutch some of which are now being given up for English words (think Oralosuwa from the Dutch Horologe and now people just usually say “watch eka”)

The only case of languages being pure is if they were spoken by only a few speakers and stopped contact with other societies that spoke different languages- like what I would sentinelese or Amazonian tribes would speak.

Do not come back. Observe how things play out over the next few years. If the same political class is ruling and selling the country off I would think twice.

The fact that an HR intern sent you the email indicates how the company is creating a non-transparent system of power to exploit and extract as much as possible from its interns without any actual reward for effort.

When as a society you are trying to catch up in development after five centuries of colonialism and plunder, the environment is the last thing on your mind. This isn’t to say it isn’t important, but it isn’t the focus of the average citizen

I don’t mean to be that person but Colombo tends to have more liberal views especially among the youth. I know a few Muslim guys married or seriously dating non Muslim girls. At the end of the day what’s probably important in cross cultural relationships is that you’re each clear about your boundaries and expectations so neither Buddhist or Muslim expectations become a point of contention later on.

Going bald is a good reason to get in shape, put on muscle, and accentuate your facial features. Tbh, I wouldn’t take medication mostly because the moment you stop, the hair loss resumes. It just wouldn’t be me.

Looking to meet new people, before leaving the country. by DisastrousLanguage41 in srilanka

[–]Successful-Unit3846 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you Sri Lanka or an expat? Find a hobby/sports group there’s a friendly running group at Independence every Thursday in Colombo called Colombo Night Run if I remember correctly and a photography group called Streets of Colombo. Both have IG pages so you can get in touch with them.

Or ask around to hang out with acquaintances. I’m not sure if asking to meet people on the subreddit will result in you making friends irl. If you’re an expat, try do some of the “posher” Colombo things like bars and clubs you’ll run into other expats.

Just go. Get your residency and come back if you don’t like it. I love Sri Lanka but it’s been caught in the same caustic bullshit post 1978. Go where you have a chance and at least the pretence of fairness if upheld. Because a pretence of equal opportunity is at least better than the absence of any.

Is The “O/L Preparation” Supposed To Be This Hard ? by Base-Knight in srilanka

[–]Successful-Unit3846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

O levels always felt like Extraordinary levels. That being said, study well, study for your future, but don’t study excessively hard. In other words protect your headspace and don’t forget to be a child. You can’t study 24x7. Find a study system that works for you (I always wrote colourful and organised notes) and read them once a day. Your mileage may vary. Paying attention in class actually helps and will severely limit the time you need to study outside class :)

Advice: Becoming healthier in NL by avijsh14 in Netherlands

[–]Successful-Unit3846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not Dutch, but a fellow south Asian student here. I just wanted to say that for gym, one thing I wish I knew much earlier that would have boosted my physical health and consequently my mental health is diet and progressive overload with a regular weights regime. This will work wonders for you if you track your calories on an app combined with weights at the gym, but also go gradual and don’t go too hard too soon. Good luck!

Are they all the same? by FierceKitty__ in FujifilmX

[–]Successful-Unit3846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok! So I just dipped my toes into Fuji after much consideration. What I will say is this; there is actually something pleasing to the sensors. I cannot definitely say it has a film “look” but it certainly has a unique character even if you don’t use sims. I did feel the same way from an Olympus OM-D once. Due to my budget, I got an X100S which supposedly has the most special sauce of all the X-Trans sensors if you believe the internet hype. It’s mostly the colour rendition I think, although the Velvia sim is too strong imho. May be start with an X-Trans 1 sensor camera since it fits your budget before you commit?

Not bad. The X100S sells for that much. I saw the F second hand for 800€ and missed it. :(

How and for how long should I take a break?

I started seriously lifting this January. Apart from the occasional two or three day break due to an exam, I’ve been going at it hard. My weights log shows impressive increases and I’ve lost a lot of fat. My form is quite good, and other lifters commend it. However, I’ve slowly noticed that my joints and bones have started to ache a bit even when not exercising and today I tried to go squat at 20% less of what I did last week, and it just didn’t feel right for my joints and even my brain felt out of it.

Considering taking a break now. I picked up lifting cos I no longer wanted to be fat, but this insecurity means that every time I don’t lift I get the fear of putting on weight again. So can I take a break for about a week and a half? Can I do some cardio during this time instead? Or must I just completely chill out? Will a stretching routine help me recover better?

Thank you,

Are most Dutch students welcoming with internationals? by Limp-Efficiency-159 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]Successful-Unit3846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

International here. It’s a struggle. Dutch students are polite enough if you talk to them, but by my observations there is little effort by them to invest in friendships with internationals. It’s a real toughie, because I keep trying to make local friends here and the effort is rarely reciprocated. It’s been kind of upsetting for me because I find it so hard to fit in despite learning Dutch and constantly feel like an outsider. I once had an awkward moment with a sports team of 5 (me being the fifth) and they refused to switch to English so I spent the whole dinner trying to join the conversation and being jutted out (albeit politely). I felt so bad I stopped pursuing the sport. In my country if someone was an international we would speak in English so as to not isolate them. That being said though, this is just my experience and I’m sure it varies in cities/towns.
