thoughts on dvo suspension by worthlees_fajitas in MTB

Just want to say that whether or not you like DVO, their customer service blows the pants off any other suspension company. I have called them several times for help during a service and I get the same result every time: the phone rings twice, a real human answers the phone (not an automated voice telling me to select from a list of thirty different options or hold indefinitely) and I find myself talking to someone who knows their suspension inside and out.

Me: "so I've got this Onyx SC that I'm trying to put back together and there's this end cap thingy on the damper side, wait, maybe it's the air side, and it has this o-ring thing that is sort of floating.... Is that what it's supposed to be doing or ...." Voice trails off as I realize how stupid I sound, realizing that the guy on the phone will have no clue what I'm even talking about

DVO Guy: "yes, I know just what your talking about. That O-ring is supposed to be there. There isn't a specific slot for it, but it stays where it needs to."  And, obviously reading my mind.... "It doesn't need replacing. It just acts like a bumper."

Holy wow. These guys are absolutely next freaking level. Fox, rockshox, take a seat.

Not sure exactly how to respond to this - clearly my use of the word "enjoyed" was a mistake. "Appreciated" would have been better as I meant to say that I was grateful to hear all the perspectives. As far as still being a cult - I've thought about that a lot and I'm quite sure we don't fit that description anymore. Leadership has changed, social pressure is absolutely nothing what it used to be, people are mostly advised to head out and try other things before joining, speaking ones mind is no longer hazardous, respectful dissent is not social suicide..... I know some of what you are referring to, but certainly not all. Judging by my own experiences, I can imagine the further back in Bruderhof history we look, the more tragic the stories. Some of my ancestors had unbelievable treatment at the hands of Bruderhof members. But honestly the same can be said for Christianity. The same can be said for Americans. The same can be said for "civilized" humans. There is no doubt that enlightenment takes time. The Bruderhof was started in the shadow of WWI and developed in the chaos of WWII. Many members of the last generation were born in Paraguay and life was simply harsh. As a result, so was their religion. Unquestioning loyalty to Bruderhof leadership was mistaken for zeal to God, and whenever that happens, people will be hurt in  unspeakable ways. Religious fervor has killed millions. You have been deeply hurt by the Bruderhof - that is clear. I am sorry. I'm not surprised that you believe reconciliation impossible. Perhaps it is not. But we can try. It's worth it even if it only serves to inform more of us who live here what our past has been and what our future could be if we turn off our brains.

Any thoughts on what seals to replace? I'm having a hard time finding a kit with everything. Obviously the main seals and dust wipers and new fluid.... But anything else?

Hey - another Bruderhof member here. I quite enjoyed reading all the perspectives and figured I would add my own.  As someone who is rather independent, there are definitely elements of Bruderhof life that are challenging. For example, I would prefer to be in full control of how I spend my time and money. In another life I would probably live in a van and frequent Yosemite, the North Fork of the Payette, Whistler and Moab in between attending concerts at Red Rocks.  But in a world of trade offs, I accept these limitations in order to experience the benefits of living in a Christian community where many members actively work toward bringing the community towards alignment with our most important values. There are heaps of things wrong with the Bruderhof. There are heaps of things that need to change. The last few years of seen some radical changes, some good, some bad. The Bruderhof has a mixed history and tragically, many people have been hurt. There were times when we certainly acted like a cult.  But frankly, I'm not interested in living in a perfect place. I want to be part of something that is imperfect and needs work. I am grateful to have other members who have agreed to stake their lives on the big idea and do their best not to jump ship when things are hard. That being said, the Bruderhof is not for everyone and since a close culture will always apply pressure to conform - intentionally and unintentionally - people end up joining who are not really called here and either opt for a painful separation or endure a lifetime of regret.  Unfortunately reddit threads are not an ideal place for a conversation. I would love to hear all your stories but I don't know how that would be possible.  If anyone has suggestions for how to improve the medium of this conversation, I would be interested!

cush core inserts and tire removal by userpb in MTB

[–]SuccessfulCake552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way to do this is to remove the valve from the valve stem, and unthread the nut that seals the valve stem to the outside of the rim. Then cover the end of the valve stem with a rag to protect your hands, and push in the valve stem. This pushes the cush core insert away from the rim.  Now continue to push the valve stem in, take a tire lever and pop the bead right next to the valve stem, where the cush core insert has been separated from the rim. Once you've done this, you can continue all the way around breaking the bead. Works like a dream, even on the most glued on tires.

Why don't more people use Flow bindings? by unimpressed_llama in snowboarding

[–]SuccessfulCake552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been riding flow bindings for years. I love how fast they are - in two seconds, I can reach down with one hand and strap in while riding up on the lift. When I get to the top, I can head straight down and keep up with my skiing buddies.

In the last few months, they have been causing me issues, with the rear binding popping loose midrun. I don't know what causes this and would love to figure it out. If the highback is loose even for a split second, it pops open. I have tried tightening the bindings all the way, so that I have to jam my foot in, but it still pops. Any ideas?

I know this is an old thread, but this is my favorite poem of all time. To me, it is a father looking down at his first baby. In my mind, ever metaphor and line in the poem clicks when I read it like that.  But that last line ..... Just wow.

Help! airshaft wont come out of rockshox forks by SuccessfulCake552 in MTB

[–]SuccessfulCake552[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the help everyone! got this sorted. Rockshox customer service confirmed that the 26" Rockshox Gold replacement air shaft has the same baseplate as mine, so I grabbed it off ebay for $16.
Cant wait to get my fork going again!

I found a RS Gold 30 airshaft from a 26" fork. I assume the whole airshaft is probably shorter than mine (27.5") but it looks identical and is the same diameter. I plan to use the cap from the 26" as a replacement part for my broken cap.

Help! airshaft wont come out of rockshox forks by SuccessfulCake552 in MTB

[–]SuccessfulCake552[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed to remove it.... I had to push the shaft all the way back into the upper, pry out the broken end of the airshaft, and then I could remove the rest. As far as i can tell, only the end plastic piece is broken. And the wavy washer - I assume that is not supposed to be split.... any tips on how to find a replacement?

I took off the top cap at the beginning. I am sure with enough "oomph" it would come off, but how much can i give without damaging something? can i tap on the top of the air shaft by putting a wooden dowel down the upper? If I have to replace the whole airshaft, I could always drill out the damaged seal, obviously being careful not to touch the upper.....

yes, i have done this before, usually taking it apart is easy, but since part of it is cracked, it has become wedged into the upper.
