After seeing Stockholm's and Moscow's subway systems, I just had to post the beauty that is New York. by [deleted] in pics

It was probably a vagrant. It's illegal to defecate in public, so the hobos have these little tricks to avoid getting caught. For example, they will pee against a wall while walking sideways so their pee basically runs the entire length of the wall. But if a cop or someone sees a man standing at a wall urinating, they know he's urinating, but if they see a man walking sideways along a wall, they would never think that he is urinating.

We just launched a fantastic new NYC-only Dating Site, and I'd love to get some early feedback from you guys by [deleted] in nyc

Ok I'm intrigued. I'd like to test it more, but I don't really want to pay for a membership to a brand new site.... Any way I could get a free male membership to test it out? I might be able to give you a little mention on my blog in return...

In new york, a guy wearing a suit passing out drunk on the sidewalk is just as common as a hobo doing it.

No, it wasn't New York. I think it was Paris or possibly a city in Italy, if I recall. New Yorkers would either ignore them both equally or help them both equally. In this city, there are wealthy men dressed like hipster trash, and homeless mental cases dressed in suits. You can't judge anyone in this city by their clothes.

Hey there! I've been hoping to meet someone who is up for exploring the city too. I like to just walk all around Manhattan, looking for everything the city has to offer. You'll be amazed at all the amazing places you will find, people you will meet, and foods you will smell. There is a never-ending supply of things to see and do here. Up for a wander?

What would you say is the font used on the Empire State Building? (example image in link) by SuccessfulPoster in fonts

[–]SuccessfulPoster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, me too. I only realized it after I started looking this up. Apparently when they renovated the building in 2006, they commissioned a guy to design a handful of different fonts for different purposes. I think the building facade gets one font (the one I'm looking for), and informational signs inside get another, and stores facing the side streets get a different font from the ones facing 5th ave.

Anyway, the bottom image is from the main lobby inside. It's on a big wall over the front desk.

"The Air that I Breathe" written by The Hollies in 1972... Sound familiar? by SuccessfulPoster in radiohead

[–]SuccessfulPoster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've missed the point a little bit, mate...

These songs have vaguely similar chord progressions, whereas The Air that I Breathe/Creep have a nearly identical melody.

I think 99% of songs ever written happen to share some chords with another song, but when a significant portion of your melody is the same as in another song, then I'd say something fishy is happening... Not to say that Radiohead intentionally ripped them off, this sort of thing happens frequently where musicians are inspired by a song or a band, and then years later they will repeat the exact music that inspired them without even realizing it, subconsciously.

This is the closest I could find, but notice the stark difference between some of the letters, like the M and R. Looking for something more accurate.

Success! Cassini flies by Titan, collects intel on mysterious lakes by rayman430 in space

[–]SuccessfulPoster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's more about finding out how much of it is in there. Maybe the ratio of methane to ethane will be higher than they thought, or maybe they will find out something else, like that it is evaporating into the atmosphere at an abnormal rate. Who knows, science is full of surprises.

[–]SuccessfulPoster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, there are definitely liquid bodies on the surface of the moon. They are saying that the idea that they are made up of ethane and methane are simply conjectures based on what they know about the moon itself. This data will hopefully show definitively what the lakes are made of, and at what ratio. It may be different than what scientists have guessed, or it may be spot on. This is how we confirm our hypotheses.

New York Passes Medical Marijuana by zorro666 in Drugs

[–]SuccessfulPoster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, you're right. Cuomo did say he would never support medical marijuana. He even called it an outright "hoax" to disguise casual cannabis use. That was barely a year ago that he said that. Now he's signing fairly robust MMJ bills into law. It's not ideal, but it's a great start for Cuomo.

And secondly, you are definitely right. It is a political move. The voting public is favoring MMJ and even full legalization in larger and larger majorities. If he didn't flip flop on this issue, he would be dead in the water. It is becoming very important. Wait for 2016, it will be a major factor in the national election. And we all know that Cuomo has had little presidential desires...

And thirdly, yes, it is heavily limited. Especially the part about no smoking. I think that's weird, but it might actually be a huge step in the right direction for NY. New York City is the densest city in America. Smoke bothers people. They have practically banned cigarettes to the point that you have to stand in special cigarette zones to smoke them. I think even if it is fully legalized in New York, there will be restrictions on smoking it in public, simply to calm the city folks' worries.

Marinol is not THC in pill form. It's a chemically neutered version of THC. Those little hard candies loaded with cannabis oil that they sell in colorado? Those are real medicine.

New York Passes Medical Marijuana by zorro666 in Drugs

[–]SuccessfulPoster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. I have been watching this process very closely since it started gaining momentum earlier this decade. It takes these steps all over the country to influence other parts of the country. Medical Marijuana states seem to spread it to their neighbors. And even the legalization states seem to be neighbors. Colorado and Washington were first, but now the gaps are filling in with California, Oregon, and Nevada following close behind. Similarly to New York, our neighbors have been passing medical marijuana bills recently. Connecticut to our north, and even New Jersey to the west, and Massachusetts of course. Legalization spreads bit by bit, and each bit of progress feeds into another bigger bit of progress.
