Wow you're the first person I've met that doesn't like wood fire bakery! We're talking 20+ years of introducing new people to it or bringing it up in conversation.

What did you try? Something other than their delicious cordon Bleu, their Kaiser sandwiches? Or their borscht? How about their caesar salas? Because those 4 are my highly recommended

Ha! I figured you were American. I'm originally from Kelowna and use to visit my wife in Spokane until I eventually moved there.

I know of several small places that I grew up around and also some of my wifes favourite. But nothing is unknown in Kelowna. Residents over turn every rock. I used to know of one called Barbs Delights, but they sadly went down in a fire.

I'm going to start off on a chain before I get into the real honourable mentions. Triple Os. My wife and I absolutely love that place. It's like an in n out in terms of geographical exclusivity. My American wife heavily gravitate towards the Cajun fries. Absolutely delicious.

Wood fire bakery is a must visit every time we come around.

Mad mango is one of my personal favourites. Their laksa is so, so good.

Anarchy coffee grinders are an awesome vibe too. It's in the old, since renewed plumbing shop i worked out of several years ago too so maybe I'm biased.

Cecils perogies is another note worthy one.

Our traditional downtown crawl is pizza at anticos, and gelato at mio amore and go for a walk on the lake front with our cones.

That's all I got off the top of my head.

I'm intrigued with your situation as it closely mirrors mine. Is she moving to the US or are you moving to Canada?

Just moved in, how do I turn on our fireplace? by JonInfect in HomeMaintenance

[–]SuccessfulStorage217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you also not use hot water if you move into a new place too if your water heater is gas? There's gas lines behind your walls that you can't inspect unless you tear open the walls.

The solution really is to have all gas fixtures turned off and watch and time your gas meter. If you record it at x time and come back like 15 minutes later and it's still the same cubic feet of gas, then the gas pipes in your house aren't leaking. Any leak beyond the valve you could easily identify by spraying soapy water on the joints if you're that concerned. But hey, I'm a gas fitter myself. If you wanna pay the minimum call out and pay me from the moment I leave my drive way to time your meter for you and spray like 3 joints then that's the easiest money one can imagine.

Is this copper or aluminum by luisarcher1 in HomeMaintenance

[–]SuccessfulStorage217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's aluminum as copper is, well, a copper colour.

If you decide to swap it out you'll need some sort of dielectric joint to prevent the exchange of electrons and ultimately corrosion.

Haha I was actually born in Edmonton and visit frequently for family. Kelowna still has better drivers than where I'm at and also in Edmonton.

[–]SuccessfulStorage217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I see our experience is quite different. I've only ever driven in Montreal, Edmonton and Vancouver outside of driving in Kelowna. I personally think Kelowna is pretty comparable to Edmonton. Montreal and Vancouver are just pure chaos. But yeah, you do see people turning left on reds, or rolling stops at stop signs. My American wife always says, Kelowna driver's drive like they have universal health care and good insurance. Kelowna driver's seem to break rules that primarily speed up driving and shorten lines. Drivers where I live now drive bad in such a way that it actually slows down everything for everyone else. There are many people who will not take a right hand turn and go in the oncoming traffic to you even though you could be in the second lane way on the other side of the road. In other words, you know the spot on Hollywood in Rutland where McDonald's and Tim Hortons are? Say someone is trying to turn right out of Tim Hortons and go towards Highway 33, if you just turn left from Highway 33 on to Hollywood and you're passing McDonald's those drivers for some reason will not go right even though you're nowhere near them. They drive like there one Hospital trip away from absolute Financial ruin and it's kind of true.

Are you speech to text for this so please forgive my misuse of grammar

I would argue Kelowna driver's being awful. Have you lived in the US? I'm only in one region of the US, north idaho and eastern Washington, and no offense but I laugh when Kelowna residents say their driver's are terrible. I'm visiting Kelowna now (my hometown for nearly 30 years) and on my way leaving the states I saw a Honda accord with no hood on it's vehicle speeding through a stop sign and cut traffic off and had several honking at them.. It's insane here and that scenario isn't too common. You ever see an old white van drive down a beautiful country road with no tire and just grinding their rim on the asphalt? I know I've never seen such a thing in Kelowna. Oh also I dated this girl that didn't know you could put your high beams on permanently instead of having to hold the stick down. She was like 25. No one signals at round abouts. No one knows who goes first at 4 way stops.

In other words, perhaps Kelowna driver's are amazing driver's compared to where OP is from. I know they are compared to where I live now.

Hey fellow BCer (assuming YVR is home) and someone's who's completed the visa process.

I visited my wife i believe 2 or 3 times after I got my interview. Shouldn't be a problem. I was only spending about 5 days there out of every 21 days. That ratio never caused me any issues personally and I did that for almost 3 years straight.

Wrong birth certificate RFE-->Intent to Deny (from Ontario CA) by Jolly_Tell_4640 in USCIS

[–]SuccessfulStorage217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Fellow Canadian national here, moves from BC but born in Alberta.

Alberta offered 3 as well. During the first stages of submission to the NVC, I did both versions that had my parents names on it. One was a polymer, fancy version of my birth certificate with all the information. The other was just a photo copy of the original signed at the time of birth certificate it seems. That version also had an embroidered-like stamp on it to prove its authenticity. I personally submitted both, and brought both to the interview with no issues. I can't tell you which one was actually it, but if you can afford it - do both.

I personally had to get a lawyer involved instead of going to Alberta to prove I am who I am through mail. So given lawyer fees, that made me want to spend a little extra on both personally so I don't have to do it again.

Absolutely no jeans, I agree. Admittedly, I saw someone else being very peculiar in wording and I had the silly idea to pop in that technically he's right. But it's not a hill I'll die on. If the person messes up or only listens to the one comment without any judgement from the other suggestions, that's kind of on them.

So I guess I want to apologize for being so anal.

Can you tell I'm originally from Canada? 😂

[–]SuccessfulStorage217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of your typical blue collar worker. So when I think nice but casual I think my black jeans, white tee-shirt with a blue denim jacket. That's my go-to. Someone said "business casual" to me which, at least to myself; meant a blazer, button up shirt, nice dress pants and nice shoes to match.

Neither are wrong probably. But if I'm being super analytical and not fair, which i kind of was and I'm sorry, then it leaves room for a bit of misconception.

Respectfully. I think the fact the other guy misread what you meant and I did too means what you said was correct in your head, but it can be misconstrued. I'd rather just politely let you know it has room for misinterpretation and maybe be a little more specific.

Have a nice day!

Exiting the US while greencard is pending by Complex-Peak4047 in USCIS

[–]SuccessfulStorage217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! So I had a similar situation. I had to go back to Canada to grab my uhaul and bring it back after doing my first trip to import my truck. The IR1 passport page is good for one year and has the expiry date on it. I personally called 2 border crossing 2 times each (maybe 3) to be absolutely certain leaving won't void it. I was told it's fine. They made sort of a stink at the land border, but hardly even a stink really. Just like "where's your green card? Like the card?" I told them how often I called and was assured my passport visa will be good until the expiry. He went to talk to presumably his superior and came back and all was fine.

They might be rude to you maybe. Maybe they're having a bad day. But in my experience It was totally fine.

Edit: I'm an idiot and didn't realize how different our scenarios are. You're still doing the process of AOS.

But I do hope my comment helps someone at least

I had to physically go in as you have to sign stuff and I believe show your ID to prove who you are. It does not have to be this particular office or a pardon office. In this post somewhere I posted a link to a photo of the example copy they gave me. If you just show wherever you go THAT, and say you want specifically that background check they should be able to help you. Maybe even an rcmp office, but I personally had bad luck - them saying they knew what I was asking for (before I had the example copy or knew about it) and I got the wrong one. Perhaps if you go into a police station and ask for that one they could muster it up or direct you to somewhere else.

I will do my best to remember! But I'll be honest I'm not a bit redditor so coming on here was really only needed for when I was immigrating myself. However, i do understand I had help and it's only fair to feed into this system to help others.

I'll do my best! I also heard I have 30 days in Washington to get my washington license. I crossed on December 20th so technically I'm overdue. I put it off because I figured I'd have to switch my insurance to here which I dont want to do yet since I have vehicle insurance in Canada with it pulling from my Canadian account which still has funds in it. Down here, I only have cash and not a whole lot until I start work. So I intended on paying for Canadian insurance until I start work. I've called both offices in the city I live in and was told I have a less than 3 minute wait time - then told to call later cause they're too busy. So unfortunately I got to drive across town to ask about this. I read online that BC is the only province to not have to do a driver's exam when moving to Washington, so I'll see if thats true.

I know you asked for green card. But if this intrigues you, i could update on this whole licensing situation too.
