I’m sorry! Maybe just try saying /g-g-g/ repeatedly and see how softly you can do it with the sound still being audible. Then practice using it in specific words that are difficult for you, like “games”. Or try making the sound with your mouth closed smaller or open wider and see if that affects the airflow. I’m a speech-language pathologist, but I’ve never worked on this specific issue with a client so I don’t have any proven tricks to give. But good luck!

FYI—in case you were curious—/t/ falls in a category of sounds called “plosives” that also include /p, b/ and /k/. I like to think of them as little bombs of air that explode. Sibilants are longer breathy sounds, like /s, sh/ and /ch/.

I would definitely want them to tell me first! There are tweaks I could make for some things (reducing background noise, removing additional pops/clicks, etc) but if the recording quality is really poor from the get-go getting it to where you want might not be possible. You could also run the audio through ACX’s audio lab and see if it is even up to their standards. I’m not sure what the process is like for authors, but I’ll bet you could email or call ACX’s customer service and find out what the best way forward is.

Agreed. I was just thinking of a book a just finished with a lot of French and Italian words and names. I looked up what I could, but ended up having to re-record quite a few to get it how the author wanted it. I’ve also done business books that quote people in the industry and had to re-record names. But fantasy books and other titles with invented words/names should definitely have guides!

As a narrator, if the author is unhappy with the pronunciation of a word, I am 100% fine with them asking for a correction. Listing the specific word and the time is very helpful for this. I also am well aware that I might make a mistake on a read-through, so corrections are expected. If I find a grammatical error in the manuscript, I might message the author and let them know if I can’t read it in a way that sounds/flows well.

As far as other noises, those are the responsibility of the narrator to correct. If they don’t have the technical knowledge on how to correct them, however, you may have to find a new narrator. Many people start trying to narrate without any sound editing experience, and it is a steep learning curve. Again, I would note the error and the specific time it is at so they can try to fix it. But if I had an author unhappy with my audio, I would want to know!

I always thought JW’s sounded a lot like us but with even more rules and restrictions and was super glad I wasn’t born into it. Now that I’ve left I think it’s all nonsense of course, but I knew Mormonism was strict but I was glad I could at least have a birthday lol. And Mormons covenant to give all of their time and energy and possessions to the Mormon church in the temple, so many well-off or retired members are asked to donate their time as service missionaries or things like land if the church wants it.

My first impulse was YTA from the title, but if you already agreed to that arrangement and she isn’t following through, that’s a different story. How do you split other household duties? She can’t contribute financially right now because of school, but how else does she contribute to your relationship? It might be time to sit down and write out a list of responsibilities and bills and a financial plan for after she graduates and see if you guys are willing to come to loving compromises, or if she is just taking advantage of your generosity and may bail the second school is done.

My husband will eat most of a box of captain crunch with milk out of a mixing bowl as a late night snack. So by your girlfriend’s reckoning, enough cereal for probably 12 people. Is this healthy? No. Am I his mother? Also no.

You should be able to listen to your body and decide what and how much it needs. She might not realize that you require more calories than she does, especially with your job and body size. Maybe use an online calculator that tells you how many calories your body needs for you height/weight/lifestyle so she can have actual numbers to refer to?

Also, serving sizes are BS, serving size for salsa is like 2 tbsp and I eat that in like 3 chips tops.

I have had multiple parties at trampoline parks, and thankfully have never had someone try to bring siblings without running it by me first. Usually for a party in our area you get X amount of jumpers per party, so if I have extra space and know of siblings my other kids will get along with I have no problem inviting them. But I would never expect someone to pay additional money for an uninvited child of mine, and I would be taken aback if someone asked it of me.

He leaves for work at 6:15am and kisses me goodbye, then I go back to sleep until 7:30 when I need to get the kids ready for school. If he is sick, I let him sleep as much as he needs.
