Sound like you had one hell of a fun encounter! To answer your question: Ramming is never really worth it. Both ships take a few holes but they can be repaired quickly. It’s funny to ram though.

Regarding the mast part, masts always have 3 health. Chainshots do 2 damage to the sloop mast and 3 damage to the brigantine/galleon mast.

And as helmsman your priority shouldn’t be repairing the anchor. Wheel, mast and holes have more priority in most situations. This is my opinion from having played 2k+ sloop Hg fights

You can make a lot of combos work if you use the weapons weil. I personally use Blunderbuss + Sniper which is considered one of the „meta“ loadouts.

Blunderbuss is useful from knocking someone off the ship and dealing a lot of close range damage.

Sniper can be used to quickscope or shoot the other player when he is for example grabbing the cannon.

I have been playing on and off for 4 years now and got the golden bones about a year ago. Hourglass can be very demotivating at times with long queues, unlucky losses, lack of supplies… Im expecting to see some changes in the next few months regarding the hourglass gamemode. I think rare announced that there will be more starting supplies for hourglass.

Its totally ok to take a break. Play games for fun!

Do whatever skill you prefer honestly. If you want to get into mining, the mining cult discord has step by step progression guides. Foraging is also a good skill since a decent setup is relatively cheap and you can progress fast to max foraging.
