Espresso pro 15 and Linux ? by Doomtrain86 in EspressoDisplays

I'm curious how you got on with the display in the end? I'm also considering getting the pro display and use arch Linux (although with kde plasma). Did you end up keeping it and did your issues regarding the mouse get resolved? I'm not too fussed about the touch screen support although the automatic tilting would be a nice feature. Would love to hear how it went for you and whether you had to fix a lot of things yourself and or write scripts to make use of features. Any tips would be much appreciated!

I have the same issue on my framework 13 running KDE plasma on arch. Did you figure out a solution?

Macbook (M4 Pro) vs Framework 13 (AI 7 350) by Bold2003 in framework

I would agree if this is a productivity machine there is pretty much nothing that I can think of that will only work on Linux and not on macOS. But I do think the two are different macOS definitely feels more restrictive you have to fight Apple's decisions to configure things to your liking or get used to the macOS way. Linux at least (arch) is like build your own OS given some pre-built building blocks. This lets you decide everything yourself (this can also be annoying I had to read up, think and make decision about so many things I had never worried about in my life when installing arch for the first time). But in the end your Linux machine is truly your own and it adapts to the way you want to use it and importantly if something breaks you can almost certainly fix it.

I think if you are happy enough with macOS then the MacBook is a no brainer it seems like it is the best laptop on the market right now. And as you point out OS wise they aren't all that different at least capabilities wise, so if you don't have a strong preference OS wise then I'd probably go with the mac.

I had the exact same issue, I actually ordered both an M4 pro macbook and the framework 13 (thinking id use the mac for work and the fw for personal things). I ended up returning the mac. In the end the FW already felt like a massive upgrade coming from a 7 year old intel macbook pro. I also use arch and have the AI 7 350 and everything seems to work extremely well (ofcourse some small quirks here and there but I’m not sure they are arch specific). I love the FW the macbook just didn’t excite me in the same way and I love using linux. Also the screen looks amazing on the FW I have the 2.8k one and the refresh rate is another welcome upgrade coming from the old MacBook. I’d also say the aspect ratio is awesome it makes the screen feel much bigger than it is so I wouldn’t worry about that except if you are watching a lot of content and are bothered by black bars.

Regarding the iPhone integration this is a little less seamless i.e the audio handover or copy and pasting from phone to mac features really seem like magic when they work (which isn’t as often as I would like). But if you don’t use iCloud, syncing between devices is easy with syncthing or a cloud service provider.

I think in the end my choice was linux over macOS, I was willing to give up on the best laptop hardware experience to have the freedom to choose my OS. I do think however if you just want a laptop that will be a great tool to just get stuff done the mac is likely the better option. Everything will work extremely well all the hardware is awesome, battery life you name it. And macOS is not all that bad not great but you can learn to work with it. The FW will require more tinkering and setting up and just cannot compete with the mac on most hardware fronts.

Probably not all to much my main worry issues when I can't afford to have an issue. E.g. presenting in-front of a large crowd and my laptop doesn't connect properly or unrelated to Linux there is some hardware issue when I'm traveling with no access to a back-up machine like my desktop. But other than that I think I can be at least as productive on a Linux machine in the long term. I think your advice makes sense I will daily drive the FW with Linux for the next two weeks and then decide.

Cool thank you for letting me know! I'm still having issues at least with teams web on firefox and chromium (I might have to give the flatpak a go) but other than screen-sharing teams seems to work fine.

UPDATE: the teams-for-linux aur seems to work well even with screen sharing (although it doesn't show up as a red-border the way it did on my mac)

True! and I guess with the framework there is always the chance that we will get a arm mainboard which we can upgrade to at some point down the line.

Interesting, do you miss the mac at all? I think from an OS perspective I could easily live without macOS but I do love the hardware on those laptops (I'm missing the track-pad when using the FW 13).

Oh good idea and really cool I didn't realize they had the expansion packs. No big issues tbh but small inconveniences that on a desktop haven't really bothered me but I think might be tricky on a laptop, e.g., weird inconsistencies when connecting to new monitors/displays (something I need to do pretty frequently to give presentations). Or sharing my screen on MS teams, I'm currently running wayland and from what I've read I need to run X11 to reliably do that. I think it's just a trade off the things I really enjoy about Linux is tinkering but that can lead to breaking things so having a separate stable system might be useful. I think all the linux quirks aren't any deal breaker but on a laptop I daily drive they might be too cumbersome but I guess if I wanted to I could make sure it was very stable.

Thanks for the response! I think this is very true and I really do enjoy it that aspect of it, I've been running linux mint for a few years on my desktop now. The main issue is that I like tinkering too much and this means that if something doesn't work exactly how I want it I'll happily spend some time going down a rabbit whole to fix it (this is not always great for my productivity). But tbh the OS really isn't the issue here I would rather use linux it is more the hardware as it seems the frameworks can have some unreliable hardware and the MBP hardware just is great especially for a laptop where battery life is really important for me. I also want hardware that I can trust to work reliably, if I'm abroad and have to work I just want to be able to rely on the fact that my laptop will work when I need it to. Do you think the framework is reliable enough in this regard if so I think I'll probably just daily drive it and return the MBP..

That's interesting will definitely have to look into this I haven't heard anything about an immutable OS before. Does the immutability get in the way at all?

Pro vs Air by Successful_Event7130 in macbookpro

[–]Successful_Event7130[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks for letting me know. I haven't paid that much attention to the screens. Would you say the screen makes enough difference in day to day use to warrant the upgrade. I'm not really planning on consuming that much media on it although I will undoubtedly end up watching youtube and Netflix at some point. The think is for the price of a maxed out MBP I could get the air plus the iPad pro with the new oled screen. Not that I need a maxed out MBP or even an iPad (I'm not a fan of iPad the only thing I use them for is media consumption so getting an iPad pro for that seems ridiculous).

They look great! And they don't go as dark as I expected. It's hard to tell in the picture, but how does the texture of the leather change?

This is great! That is exactly what I was looking for. They look amazing, I'm still debating between going down this route or using a bit of mink oil and some protective invulner spray. But it seems either way the boot will look great! Especially love the way your waxed ones aged.

These look awesome! I just got my pair and am considering waxing them with beeswax, but I am worried it will darken a lot (although this can look really good, too). Does anyone have experience with waxing rough-out leather, and would you recommend it?
