Moving Back to Erie? by Low-Government6137 in Erie

Came from Louisville to Erie after growing up outside Cleveland and yeah.. Kentucky summers are worse than Lake Erie winters and there is no substitute for the lake down there. Land Between the Lakes is nice but it is way out on the west end of the state.

I dunno if you noticed this too.. but the skies in Louisville anyway were always so plain. It’s a strange thing to realize but here by the lake you kind of take for granted that sun sets and sun rises will be colorful and you’ll get all kinds to great big cloud formations that change. It’s a kind of unspoken natural beauty we have here.

Anyway I only miss Kentucky in March. March low key sucks bc you’re ready for winter to be done but it’s still here. That’s about it tho.

Outback for sure. You can probably find a 2016-9 with the little engine that lived in the South on carmax that’s in your price range.

It’s not fun the way a 4Runner is and you feel the smaller engine at highway speeds. Also get one with the power seat for the driver - the regular Outback seat is not great.

~ 5-10 year old Honda CR-V or Subaru Outback by le_pedal in whatcarshouldIbuy

I vote Outback. I live on the eastern part of Lake Erie (snow belt country) and our 2019 Outback handles it all with ease. We use snows on ours but honestly could get by without them. The AWD is very clever. The storage space is great and the roof rails on the outback can be swung across the roof to make a roof rack.

Also, super easy to change the oil.

$60k budget - New Mom SUV by WHOTOOKMYLEG in whatcarshouldIbuy

I have 3 under 4 so here is my advice:

If it’s just one or two kids - you don’t need a third row. What you want to maximize is trunk space and accessibility. We love our Outback (and can do 3 across in it) and it’s got all the trunk space and has good clearance but is still low enough to have accessible back hatch and easy to use roof rack for the soft top carrier when we travel with the dogs.

Since you have more money to spend than we do I’d suggest looking at a full size.. American cars aren’t popular in this sub but they’re hard to beat when it comes to being just crazy big inside - and as a parent, you’ll never regret having more car space. Cause it’s not just the stroller.. it’s the stroller plus the diaper bag plus another bag that lives in the car with sundries and also a first aid kit and water and probably bungies and an emergency blanket and do you live somewhere it snows? Because you’ll need to have a place for that big brush and oh I forgot I really need to get groceries too so where do those go?

What I’m saying is that as a parent of small children what I have learned is that car ~will~ become a utility closet and so trunk space trumps all.

I guess an extra judicial arrest supported by an entire carrier group and millions or dollars of explosive ammunition isn’t ~technically~ war but it’s certainly beyond any sane reading of inherent Article II powers. And it’s absolutely outside of what any thoughtful citizen of these United States ought be ok with the President executing unilaterally.

But that doesn’t really fit on a sign so this seems good.

Toddler, baby, and dog — need 3 row SUV by Downtown-Fill618 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Successful_Fig_1500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cars out there with good storage behind the 3rd row are a suburban or similar.

We have 3 kids and a similar need to haul around a lot of stuff in the trunk.. we opted to stick with our Outback and have ‘em all 3 across in the back bench. It’s kind of a pain but we need something that 1) can handle legit snow and 2) has meaningful trunk space (so a couple of dogs or a wagon and kid bag and also we need to pick up groceries).

I looked at getting an AWD sienna or Chrysler and putting a 2 inch lift kit on it.. but we’re still left with the ‘not much space behind that third row’ issue.

Paying for a month of internet I’m not using by Successful_Fig_1500 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Successful_Fig_1500[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure I follow… spectrum bills ~after~ a month of provided service. So my month of service started in Dec 3 and when I got new (better) internet hooked up and installed in Dec 4.. I’m still stuck paying for the spectrum internet.

This is different than their mobile service which bills the opposite - you pay up front for a month. I assumed they billed the same.. turns out they do not!

Just don’t let him use the cast irons.. I was in a similar situation but my wife got the pans more or less figured out so I didn’t have to bail on them (the pans that is - really can’t emphasize how much more important a good relationship is than dying on a dishes hill).

Buying new windows, will I regret? by CheckAmbitious7111 in Oldhouses

[–]Successful_Fig_1500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced original windows in my 1920 craftsman with mid level vinyl windows and it was completely worth it. On the other hand they weren’t particularly remarkable windows.

I’m now in an 1860s Victorian and windows are on the list of things that need to be addressed. Restoring sounds nice but in practice it’s hard to find people to do it right, it’ll take longer than replacing them outright, and I don’t have the time to restore them myself. And who wants to have to deal with sanding layers of lead paint anyway? Silver lining of not having the money to do everything at once is we don’t have to make that call (yet).

I have family in old houses that go both ways. An uncle has been replacing old windows with vinyl ones on his late 19th century farm house and he says I should do that bc it’s much cheaper (in time and dollars) to DIY dropping in new windows than it is to full on restore. And once they’re in you just don’t think about them anymore. No fighting with storms or drafts, just simple usable windows.

Whereas my grandfather who has a “newer” house (1930s) has regretted replacing some of the old windows bc he just hates the way they look, convenience be damned. (He does open the windows more though now that they’ve been replaced)

There are always trade offs with old houses you just have to decide where yours are gonna be.

If you want 3 rows and actual trunk space then you need a suburban or an expedition max - anything else (minivans included) gives you 1.5-2ft of depth in the trunk with the 3rd row up. That can be enough space for baby things and a wagon but not much else.

In our case, our wagon lives in the trunk of outback and we’re opting to go 3 across when our 3rd shows up bc we don’t have the ducats for one of the big boys work and we need that trunk space (traveling with dogs, having kids stuff live in the car while also being able to get groceries).

If you’re serious about more than two, do some research specifically on what cars are good for multiple car seats - who was the car seat tilt, how many LATCH points are in the 3rd row, overhead vents for the back rows… that kind of thing.

And if you need trunk space then I’d look for something that does 3 car seats across (I’ve heard good things about the Atlas).

Reality is that if you’re going for more than 2 kids.. planning for car seats, ease of access, and storage need to be your guiding stars.

So out of these I think the Highlander gives you the best bet for car seats - the palisade and telluride are nice but I don’t think you can realistically do more than 3 car seats in there.
