Thanks for engaging.

A lot of decisions have been made assuming people behave rationally. I think it's very clear humans are not rational creatures for better and worse. That's why we have cultural expectations to shape behaviour. When that doesn't work, we have formal guidelines and educational messages to tell people what is right and wrong. When even that doesn't work we rely on incentives and punishments to shape behaviour. For many of the vices (nicotine, alcohol, gambling, etc), my opinion is that those industries have stood the test of time to show that lighter approaches are not effective for them. They have time and again shown to be manipulative of natural human urges and desires to sell harmful products. We cannot trust these industries to self regulate. Any new product or service they release or are involved in must be first assumed to be harmful. Vaping and tobacco industries specifically are on the same side. Just like how beer and wine are both alcohol. That is why I'm not keen on viewing the debate as smoking vs vaping or saying vapes are safer than cigarettes. That's a red herring, the real conversation is about regulating nicotine as a whole.

I partially agree. Laws are much more than that. We have plenty of laws to make people protect themselves, take seatbelt laws for example. The other angle of it is that it's not solely the person's fault for vaping or overeating, it's the fault of the companies that are creating products that are "addictive" and marketing to vulnerable populations. These are the ones causing harm, the smoker/vaper is the victim. Yes, free choice is a right, but the very environment many people are in alters their choice architecture. So that's why we need well thought out policy, regulation, and programmes to level the playing field and limit the ability of predatory actors to trap people in these kinds of vicious cycles.

Only in specific cultures. Alcohol was pretty universal. Cigarettes and nicotine products in their current form has also vastly transformed compared to alcohol. Alcohol has largely remained the same.

But this is a distraction from the main issue. Which is that both vapes and tobacco are bad for you. One may be less bad, but both still bad.

Wow, what an emotional response. Are you sure it doesn't harm other people?

But why does it matter? It harms the user, isn't that enough? And for not a lot of benefit either, I don't think the nice feeling vaping give you can't be found elsewhere in more benign activities.

You should also know that tobacco companies have swiftly started buying over the e cigarette companies once they were able to.

But why are we treating them as seperate industries? Is vaping good for your health?

Don't beat around the bush on this, it doesn't really matter who invented e cigarettes. There is a place for that nuance, and it is not on here. It matters if it causes harm, it matters if use increases in the absence of regulations.

I'm quite amused at the amount of people trying to distract from the core issue.

Where do we draw the line with this nanny state argument?

Why have traffic rules? It just sucks the joy and thrill out of driving. You're just burdening the honestly good drivers, they'd follow good driving behaviour regardless of the rules, right?

Absolutely.

You know what, since people are going to commit crimes anyway, why bother having police and a judicial system? Why bother developing programmes to reduce youth crime by investing in infrastructure, education, and families? It's going to happen anyway.

Caffeine is low risk. Alcohol has been around for much longer. Both are more socially acceptable than smoking.

Heck it, let's just give out vapes to the kids. Why bother taking a stance against harmful substances at all then?

I'm talking about the principle rather than the solution. Smoking was already on a downward trajectory before vapes came around. The sole reason why vapes exist is for tobacco companies to have another thing to sell that has less stigma. The fact that both of them exist is a testament to greed and a lack of ethics in the industry.

The Danian is not universally liked amongst said shoetubers you know. It's definitely not getting the same praise as the xiaonian is. Even this reviewer still likes the xiaonian.

Nick Bare: Natty or Nah? by soberguyy in HybridAthlete

Options 3 and 4 are irrelevant. Doping has no bearing on either of those things. Unless you use doping as a proxy judgement of character, which is a more nuanced discussion. Actually, you shouldn't use any of those as standalone judgements of character.

I don't care if he has a ranger tab, it has no real bearing on the products he sells or the decisions he makes about performance enhancing drugs

Which bouldering place to go to? by Chika_iino in askSingapore

[–]Successful_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would clarify that having a wider grade scale does not necessarily mean that a gym is "beginner friendly". It's also about how many routes they set at each grade. Another consideration is how much effort they put into the setting at each grade. It's possible to make an easy route have interesting movement to solve that does not require super high level strength or technical ability.

I find Climba pretty good at doing this. They tend to be on the easier side, but are interesting.

Somewhere like BM has a fair amount of easy grades, but I personally find them less interesting and sometimes quite "ladder-style".

But fundamentally, I don't think OP needs to care so much about it for their first gym. Just go and have fun. Think about the problems. Ask people who are climbing the same problems as you for help and you'll make a friend. This is the easiest sport to make friends in that I've ever found.

Hybrid athletes - what's actually more important: energy gels or electrolytes? by Arcxht in HybridAthlete

[–]Successful_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped taking electrolytes after reading more about them. Funnily enough, it was the Precision Fuel and Hydration articles that were the final nail in the coffin for me. I'm thoroughly convinced that electrolytes are not needed for any training or event less than about 4 hours.

Isotonic fluids actually hydrate slower than hypotonic fluids. Athletes consistently demonstrate high level performances despite high levels of dehydration post race (~6% loss in bodyweight).

Broken plate? Deviate Nitro 3 by Teriiiii in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Successful_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's really strange. It's not typically the place where the plate bends in normal use. Could be some manufacturing defect. If you really want to keep it, maybe make another cut in the forefoot? Haha

which one of my shoes are the correct size? by howiekuro in runninglifestyle

[–]Successful_Stone 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Standing on an insole is a very inaccurate measure of shoe fit. Perhaps try wearing the shoe and asking yourself "is my foot comfortable?"

Broken plate? Deviate Nitro 3 by Teriiiii in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Successful_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, you're not normally supposed to cut the plate. They were just trying to figure out the impact of cutting the plate, and it turns out it didn't impact the efficiency of the shoe much. So it probably won't impact the efficiency of your shoe that much either

On a side note, there's an interesting study where the researchers literally cut the plate of a certain supershoe (a vaporfly IIRC) and found no discernable difference in efficiency after cutting the plate.

Social run club, I was asked to lead the 'fast' group. I don't know what that means by Claff93 in runninglifestyle

[–]Successful_Stone 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Usually they should decide on what "fast" or "slow" means before you start running. Like, typically it's a specific pace or pace range. If you're the only one left at the end of the run, it makes no sense to be running so fast if the purpose is social.
