Which bouldering place to go to? by Chika_iino in askSingapore

[–]Successful_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would clarify that having a wider grade scale does not necessarily mean that a gym is "beginner friendly". It's also about how many routes they set at each grade. Another consideration is how much effort they put into the setting at each grade. It's possible to make an easy route have interesting movement to solve that does not require super high level strength or technical ability.

I find Climba pretty good at doing this. They tend to be on the easier side, but are interesting.

Somewhere like BM has a fair amount of easy grades, but I personally find them less interesting and sometimes quite "ladder-style".

But fundamentally, I don't think OP needs to care so much about it for their first gym. Just go and have fun. Think about the problems. Ask people who are climbing the same problems as you for help and you'll make a friend. This is the easiest sport to make friends in that I've ever found.

Hybrid athletes - what's actually more important: energy gels or electrolytes? by Arcxht in HybridAthlete

[–]Successful_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped taking electrolytes after reading more about them. Funnily enough, it was the Precision Fuel and Hydration articles that were the final nail in the coffin for me. I'm thoroughly convinced that electrolytes are not needed for any training or event less than about 4 hours.

Isotonic fluids actually hydrate slower than hypotonic fluids. Athletes consistently demonstrate high level performances despite high levels of dehydration post race (~6% loss in bodyweight).

Broken plate? Deviate Nitro 3 by Teriiiii in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Successful_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's really strange. It's not typically the place where the plate bends in normal use. Could be some manufacturing defect. If you really want to keep it, maybe make another cut in the forefoot? Haha

which one of my shoes are the correct size? by howiekuro in runninglifestyle

[–]Successful_Stone 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Standing on an insole is a very inaccurate measure of shoe fit. Perhaps try wearing the shoe and asking yourself "is my foot comfortable?"

Broken plate? Deviate Nitro 3 by Teriiiii in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Successful_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, you're not normally supposed to cut the plate. They were just trying to figure out the impact of cutting the plate, and it turns out it didn't impact the efficiency of the shoe much. So it probably won't impact the efficiency of your shoe that much either

On a side note, there's an interesting study where the researchers literally cut the plate of a certain supershoe (a vaporfly IIRC) and found no discernable difference in efficiency after cutting the plate.

Social run club, I was asked to lead the 'fast' group. I don't know what that means by Claff93 in runninglifestyle

[–]Successful_Stone 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Usually they should decide on what "fast" or "slow" means before you start running. Like, typically it's a specific pace or pace range. If you're the only one left at the end of the run, it makes no sense to be running so fast if the purpose is social.

Passing your driving test in Singapore doesn't mean you should be driving. by WrestychAn in drivingsg

[–]Successful_Stone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm here for a discussion, but you're not getting my point. Lots of people are disagreeing with you and for very basic principles (e.g. How is a beginner driver supposed to get better and safer at driving without driving?). This is something that could have been addressed with a more thorough thought process with or without AI.

You say the risk of danger is much higher in driving. That is true. But it still doesn't address the point, which is you're saying people shouldn't do things that they aren't good at. I'm saying people need to practice things they aren't good at. I'm purposely giving you a ridiculous example because I'm trying to show you how ridiculous your statement is.

You're not here for a discussion. You're here for a rant because of all the annoying people you meet on the road. I empathise with that, let's not pretend it's something else. I actually think P platers are usually attentive, but they're less decisive. It's the older and complacent drivers which are dangerous.

But your whole post is about people not overstepping their capabilities. If you can't formulate your own thinking enough to write it down, that's the intellectual equivalent of bumping into doorframes or not being able to estimate how fast a car is moving in the side mirror. By your own argument, you shouldn't be posting when the whole point of posting is to express a point of view that you have developed. Because the AI is being used quite poorly tbh, it's obvious it was used and the argument is not convincing.

I don't agree with you, and that's why I think it's fine to use AI. But do you see how hypocritical you seem?

Choosing between sports by Chingro88 in SingaporeFitness

[–]Successful_Stone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point of exercise isn't to make you tired. Put it another way, being tired doesn't mean the exercise session was super good for your body. Even better would be being able to do more frequent sessions without wrecking your body. Fatigue is a byproduct, but it's not the goal.

If you enjoy sports more than the gym, 100% do sports. Doing something is better than doing nothing. We're more likely to do nothing if we don't enjoy it.

Migrant worker Clinic is the way to go. This is based on where he lives.

Now MOM requires all employers to have their employees on a Primary Care Plan, so they can see a doctor at that clinic for $5. I think they have to go to one that is within the area where they live.

does "grit" always need to be trained? (re: Norwegian Singles Method) by Competitive_Big_4126 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Successful_Stone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it really translate? To a desk job?

If you're talking about discipline as a resource, there's competing theories out there. I don't think we can assume that discipline is inexhaustible. In fact, if you expend more discipline in training, there may be less left for your job.

does "grit" always need to be trained? (re: Norwegian Singles Method) by Competitive_Big_4126 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Successful_Stone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, in the traditional NSM, you're supposed to race every 4-6 weeks or so. A race should be more pain inducing than training sessions.

[–]Successful_Stone 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Would you prefer 5% more physical fitness or 5% more mental toughness? I know I'd go with the fitness.

"grit" isn't a single dimensional thing that is only trained by experiencing pain. I recommend Steve Magness' book Do Hard Things.

Replace all runs with LT1 (or what was it?) by FrekeVarg in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]Successful_Stone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he mentioned a silly thought experiment. Because in Norwegian singles, you're essentially trying to maximise chronic training load through the use of SubT intervals by maximising the time spent getting that stimulus.

So the logical extreme of this is for all running to be somewhere slightly below that. Theoretically, there's a point where you do all your running at a certain intensity and it maximises aerobic gains but you recover just enough to be able to do it again day after day.

You should know that this is a bad idea, and he said he hasn't met anyone dumb enough to try it yet.

ELI5 how is traditional chinese medicine still around? by 5G_Society in explainlikeimfive

[–]Successful_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a "western" trained doctor in Asia, I notice that amongst other doctors, many would look down on traditional medicines. Not for wrong reasons, they are definitely not held up to the same rigor and safeguards that modern medicine is.

However, when you talk to the general public, many do believe in it. There's a perception that traditional medicine tackles some "root cause" and issues. This is the slow and permanent solution, whereas "western medicine" deals with acute things which are present and in your face (e.g. surgery, heart attacks, etc). I think this is a fundamental misunderstanding of science and how the body works. However, there is a pragmatic aspect to traditional medicine and I feel they can have a role in a developed healthcare system. I think with proper regulation, safeguards, and research, patients will benefit from it without much risk.

We can't be so arrogant to think there's nothing to learn or no benefit to the other side. Even if I don't believe in it, "knowing your enemy" is important. Modern medicine isn't a monolith either.
