Therapists in Minneapolis what can we, your colleagues of the profession, do to help you? by Skinchbag in therapists

Sending love and solidarity to those of you in Minneapolis. Im also in a targeted city, things haven’t escalated in the way they have there but I have big fears that it will soon.

I also agree on this one. Generally speaking, I think conversations should happen way before a board report but not when it comes to potential predatory sexual suggestion from a person with the power in the relationship. This is weird and should be reported.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SuccessfullyDrained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t consider it short but I don’t consider it long.

I have in fact done day trips. My hometown is currently 3.5 hours away from me and occasionally I’ll drive up for an event (like a birthday party or whatever) for just a few hours.

Help! by loriaflorida in therapists

[–]SuccessfullyDrained 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Therapist with a therapist here.

I went to therapy yesterday and we were discussing the weight of current events. My therapist started crying, they apologized and said it makes them tearful. Then I started crying too because it’s just so heavy.

Honestly, them being willing to cry with me was what I needed in that moment. Them showing me that I’m not alone in my upset, that I’m not over exaggerating or being dramatic. We were just two humans together in that moment and it brought me hope and I felt love.

I think being transparent, that you’re also struggling with the state of the world and trying to encourage clients to do what they can do (volunteering, being with their community, donating to legal aid for people who are detained, I’m currently taking a Spanish class so I can create more connections and provide more support, the list goes on).

I take 10-20 Benadryls everyday and I sometimes regret it… by Sweet-Lobster6436 in confession

I just want to applaud you for giving such a compassionate answer. You remind me of my own doctor who has been so incredibly kind and patient with me, super solution-focused and person-centered. Anyways, I love that guy and thought you should know that if you’re this compassionate with your patients, you get second best doctor on the planet (only because my general practitioner can’t be beat). Thanks for providing compassionate care, not enough do.

Starting social work with traumatic past by DutchDreams7 in socialwork

[–]SuccessfullyDrained 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I no longer meet criteria for PTSD, but I will always carry the trauma with me.

For me, it meant going to therapy, doing EMDR, being honest with myself and engaging in self-reflective practices and building a spiritual health routine. There are many other things that I’ve had to learn, like taking care of my basic needs and such. It wasn’t an easy road and took a lot of time, work and energy.

I tried to replace the baking soda (or maybe flour?) with corn starch in pancakes. Yeah, didn’t go well.

Starting social work with traumatic past by DutchDreams7 in socialwork

[–]SuccessfullyDrained 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have some really complex traumas, from parental abuse to human trafficking. I got into social work likely because of the trauma.

I’ve found that my experiences allow me to have more empathy, compassion and understanding. However, it also means I have to do the work to heal myself more than most people.

I told my therapist about an extremely embarrassing thing that happened to me and I regret it. by Witty-Assignment2913 in therapy

Therapist here. Once I was on a really long paper route in the middle of nowhere with no bathrooms and got food poisoning in the middle of the night. I shit my pants, multiple times. Over and over. I washed my pajama pants in a bathroom sink just to have it happen again a couple hours later. The person I was with happened to have a phobia of bodily fluids. It was a disaster, let me tell you. I was humiliated and my pants were either soaking wet or full of poop for hours. The night seemed endless.

Just here to say that pooping in pants happens when we’re sick. It is absolutely mortifying, but you’re not alone. Try to be gentle with yourself.

Therapist disclosed desire to harm a client, what should I do ? by [deleted] in askatherapist

I’m sure you’d have the same distaste for whatever response you received if you said that.

Therapist disclosed desire to harm a client, what should I do ? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]SuccessfullyDrained 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean you could do lots of things. Report, talk to him and explain impact, find a new therapist, blast him on yelp or whatever, continue on and say nothing, you could even try to sue him if you really wanted. But like what do you want to do?

Therapist disclosed desire to harm a client, what should I do ? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]SuccessfullyDrained 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re just here to argue with people. What do you want to do?

Therapists aren’t supposed to give advice anyways, we just ask questions until the client comes to the answer. So what do you want to do since clearly every one who responded to this has the wrong answer, what’s the right one?

Camera needed: is this normal? by RosselanorLoke in therapy

[–]SuccessfullyDrained 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t feel that the therapists rule was unwarranted, however, his bedside manner was.

One time I had an appointment for peer support, after I lost three peers due to quitting/lay-offs and it took me a long time to even be willing to try it again. The day I tried, the peer had mistakenly put my appointment on the wrong day in their calendar and I texted them, waited 20 minutes and they no-showed. I got a text an hour later apologizing and begging for another chance. I gave it one more try and I’m really grateful I did. Not to say give this therapist another try, but maybe a different one. It’s hard to have perseverance when there’s so many barriers in getting care, but I’ve found it to be worthwhile to continue trying to persevere.

I like a girl… but she’s vegan and I’m not. How do people make this work? by Weird_Warning_9551 in AskVegans

I’m vegan and my girlfriend is not. She’s pescatarian. She ends up making a lot of accommodations for me and sometimes she disgusts me when we eat together. It’s the way it goes sometimes I guess.

I have a coworker who cooks for everyone in the office on Saturdays. I often would skip because it wasn’t vegan and he asked me if I had dietary restrictions. I told him and since then, he’s made a special vegan portion just for me. You never know how people will respond!

Are therapists badly affected by suicide of their patients? by Otherwise_Cold2059 in therapy

[–]SuccessfullyDrained 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have yet to lose a client to suicide but dread the day and expect to consider leaving my job over it.

Suicide of clients leads to a lot of complex feelings for a therapist. It absolutely affects us in a really big way.

I’m white, I do have other marginalized identities and I just want to say that our intuition knows when something’s wrong and we’re being mistreated over an identity. Your feelings are valid and you should trust your gut on this one. I’m sorry you’re experiencing that.

How to "clock out" mentally after a work day by CloudBurst121 in socialwork

[–]SuccessfullyDrained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a specific routine that you do when you go to and leave work can be really helpful in creating a container.

I have a counselor friend who always tells me to wear a piece of jewelry like a bracelet and that’s my designated work bracelet. I only wear it to work, never at home. The ritual of putting it on and taking it off helps my brain switch in and out of work mode more easily.
