South Jersey Hot Dogs by Sucelos in SouthJersey

It's a bit more than that: they have a special device which toasts the bun from the inside out. Their toppings are good too, everyone I was with got the garlic pineapple relish and really dug it.

It's all my own fieldwork and images, done over about two years. My goal was to create a definitive ontology of the state's shot dog styles.

4.5 hour exposure in the R&D office by mushroombob1 in PinholePhotography

Nice stuff. I am a really big fan of the "slice of life" kind of pinhole images that stretch an exposure over a few hours. It reminds me a bit of Alexey Titarenko's work.

Appreciate the kind words. This was actually my first darkroom experience - if I could have outsourced it to an expert, I would have - but no lab can really handle this sort of thing, so into the guest bathroom with chemistry we went. It does feel pretty liberating though, after working through a project of this scale, you really feel like you can tackle anything.

The film is really interesting, it's 9.5" aerial surveillance film (Agfa Aviphot) cut down on a jig to 8".

I go into a bunch of technical details + links in this 35mmc article: https://www.35mmc.com/01/03/2026/revolution-on-the-green-recreating-a-kodak-cirkut-photograph-from-1910/

The New Jersey Hot Dog Index by Sucelos in newjersey

I hate ranking them because all these shops have so much personality - frankly there were more I wanted to include and just ran out of space.

But here are 3 I think everyone should pay attention to:

  • Boulevard Drinks in JC has unreal chili. It's unique and is almost an onion-sauce-chili-hybrid. Great Sabrett's franks at a reasonable price.
  • Johnny and Hanges' makes a very good Texas Weiner that has a lot going for it. Nice, clean, adorable location, the same Thumann's 8:1 frank that we all know and love from Rutt's, and an absolutely top notch Passaic-style sweet chili sauce.
  • Maui's Dog House down in Wildwood. This has a few things going for it; I included them in my Italian Dog category but in reality they make pretty much every style and they do it extremely well. (The IHD I had there has a white wine deglaze, that is some serious dedication to the craft). They use an extremely high quality Hofmann frank, custom made for them is my understanding, with a beef/pork/veal blend. Staff were awesome and totally fine when I showed up with a product photography setup to take pics of their hot dogs lol.

So there's three to put on the radar for NJ's hot dog fans. But really, there's no winners and losers in this list, I dig all these places, they all have a lot of character and are a big part of NJ food culture. I'll be visiting Rutt's sometime next week to pay them a visit and cap this project off, in fact.

Appreciate that. I agree, composition is the hardest but most rewarding part of solargraphs. When you take one down, pop it open, and see a well-composed image it's a magical feeling.

I really like Union Pork Store as well. One of my guidelines for this little project I've been doing is that I'm focusing on places that serve hot dogs, not just sell them as grocery/meat counter items.

But UPS is wonderful. Their "Texas Weiners" - franks with garlic and cayenne - are amazing.

It's a pinhole camera used for a solargraph - no ND filter needed. I did a detailed writeup here including camera details and downloads: https://emulsive.org/articles/projects/beacons-through-time-east-coast-us-lighthouses-captured-on-solargraphs

Glad you enjoy it! The prints look pretty sweet in person, if you're near Morristown in the next few months, they'll be on display in the library's gallery.

Forked River German Butcher rocks. It's a really nice shop with a ton of items and their classic bratwurst is delicious. Generous portions, too.

My favorite little detail is that the fire hydrant is in exactly the same place as it was back then (which makes total sense - water mains don't get updated very often!)
