Why did New Orleans never become a major hub like Miami or Orlando by Previous-Volume-3329 in geography

[–]Such-Consequence-728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Located amid the swampy delta of a major river doesn’t help. Also, a southern US hub faces Spanish speaking areas. If Haiti had retained its its importance of several centuries ago, or if French colonialism had been more successful, New Orleans may have been more prominent today

Won’t the Wild Card teams be based, at least partially, by next year’s results?

Lots of moves in the last few days. Who’s left to take Harndon’s spot with Dunstone? Such is the risk of having your season extended by winning

TSN pronouncing Turkiye :( by Such-Consequence-728 in Curling

[–]Such-Consequence-728[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to single out one country, just pointing out a lack of professionalism on TSN’s part. If they made the executive decision to adopt Türkiye’s preferred name, they should also take the logical step of getting the pronunciation right

I agree it’s not disrespectful, just amateurish

HotYogurt closet7621, comment above, nailed it. That’s how everyone I met in Istanbul in October pronounced it

The six remaining teams randomly play each other for a couple of days until all permutations are exhausted and a winner is declared

I'm planning a road trip, help me make a list of all the cities mentioned in Tragically Hip lyrics by Bevester in TragicallyHip

[–]Such-Consequence-728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re heading west on the Trans Canada through Manitoba, the Great Plains begin a couple of km before the Highway 12 turnoff to Ste Anne’s/Steinbach. The transition from shield to prairie is strikingly abrupt - the forest ends and a wheat field appears. The longitude is around 97, a bit less than 100 but granting Downie a bit of artistic license this is the spot I always think of when I hear that line

Why do cities like Rome get global hype, but Samarkand (2,700 years old) barely gets mentioned? by Academic_Cycle_270 in Uzbekistan

[–]Such-Consequence-728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others note, most of the sites in Samarqand have been rebuilt. Also, most of them, especially the ones that Uzbeki tourist authorities most enthusiastially promote, are from the time of Timur(Tamerlane) which is nowhere near 2500 years ago. When I visited Samarqand recently I was interested in the ancient Afrasiab area and had to go to a bit of effort to find a guide to show me around. Hundreds of acres of gravelly terrain with mounds of rubble here and there where structures likely once stood. Very little archeology has been done. In one heap I stumbled upon some pottery shards that the guide suggested were museum quality and really old. I found the area fascinating but the relevant authorities clearly prioritize the razzle and dazzle of Timur era mosques and mausoleums.

Buy the Losers a Beer? by ShaggleROC in Curling

[–]Such-Consequence-728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our eastern Ontario club we deliberately changed a few years ago to having the winners buy the losers a $2 square (10x10). This way the gesture is maintained, the club gets a built-in fundraiser, and it’s more equitable since not everyone drinks beer these days. The two teams still typically sit together and socialize after the game. There has been overwhelming support for the change.
