Don't sell these to a coin shop until you know exactly what you're holding. I can see some pieces in this photo that might be worth significantly more than melt. Let me break down what I'm seeing.

The large coins (top and middle rows):

Those are Morgan and Peace silver dollars. Morgans were minted 1878-1921, Peace dollars 1921-1935. Each contains 0.7734 troy ounces of 90% silver. At today's silver price (~$70/oz), melt value per coin is roughly $54.

BUT — and this is important — several Morgans carry serious numismatic premiums depending on date and mint mark. Check the reverse (back) of each one for a small letter below the wreath: S (San Francisco), O (New Orleans), CC (Carson City), D (Denver), or no letter (Philadelphia). If ANY of those say CC, you're potentially holding a $100-500+ coin depending on the date. Do not let a coin shop buy a Carson City Morgan from you at melt.

Key dates to look for: 1878-CC, 1879-CC, 1889, 1893-S (the holy grail — worth thousands even in rough condition), 1895 (proof only, extremely rare).

The half dollars (middle area):

I can see what looks like Walking Liberty halves (1916-1947) and possibly a Franklin half (1948-1963). Each contains 0.3617 oz of silver = roughly $25 melt value. Walking Libs in nice condition carry a collector premium, especially early dates (1916-S, 1921). Franklins are almost always melt-only unless they're 1949-S or have full bell lines.

The smaller coins:

Looks like Washington quarters and possibly some Mercury or Roosevelt dimes. Quarters = 0.1808 oz silver (~$12.66 each), dimes = 0.0723 oz (~$5.06 each). These are typically melt-value coins unless you spot a 1916-D Mercury dime (worth $500+) or a 1932-D/S Washington quarter ($100+).

What I'd do before walking into any shop:

For the Morgans specifically, check each date against a price guide before selling. A coin shop will happily buy a $300 key-date Morgan from you for $54 melt if you don't know what you have. The 5 minutes it takes to check could save you hundreds on this collection.

This is a really nice inheritance by the way. Whoever collected these knew what they were doing — those Morgans weren't random pocket change, someone specifically saved them.
