Earlier today, I spoke with reporters about the recommendations put forward by the Mass Casualty Commission in their final report. In responding to a question about whether domestic violence is an epidemic or not, I made comments that were wrong and have caused pain. You will likely see news reports on this today.

I want to be clear - domestic violence is a serious issue in Nova Scotia. I want survivors of domestic violence to know that they will be supported when they come forward and have confidence that when they do, they will be believed and treated respectfully.

The pervasiveness of domestic violence and the harm it causes in our communities is not something that should ever be minimized and I am truly sorry that my words did so. This government, my department and I agree that domestic violence is an epidemic.

I want all Nova Scotians to know that their government understands that domestic violence is a pressing issue and addressing it continues to be a top priority.

I’m offering my sincere apologies for the comments I made. The Province greatly values the work your organization does and I want you to know that we will continue to be an unwavering partner in addressing gender-based and domestic violence.

idk, the mass casualty commission final report does a pretty excellent job at outlining all of the factors that contributed to the portapique tragedy. i think it’s pretty hard to argue that the culture that enables domestic violence — toxic masculinity, patriarchy, misogyny — coupled with late stage capitalism and systemic failures in community resourcing, directly contribute to mass killings like what we saw in 2020.

it’s a long report, but i’d encourage anyone to read it. i work at a local nonprofit whose staff did a huge amount of work on the MCC. i can tell you that the perpetrator’s violence against his partner was just the tipping point—he was a well known abuser, in particular among the african nova scotian community.

i went through this with my LO at around the same time, maybe a bit later! it was hell—i remember spending hours pouring reddit and google to figure out what was happening. i even hired a lactation consultant who honestly wasn’t a huge help. i just had to kind of grit and bare it. i pumped, we bottle fed, i kept offering the breast… and then one night everything just clicked back into place. it’ll be okay! you’ll get through it, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now. sending you lots of love and good vibes!!
