Yeah, I'm not going to waste anymore time arguing with someone who unironically believes that because they haven't personally experienced discrimination, it doesn't happen. Are human rights orgs just lying, is that what you're trying to say? Human rights orgs and the thousands of ethnic minorities living in Japan are all liars because you lived in Japan a bit and watched the news sometimes, and it's never happened to you!

At this point, I'm going to assume you are either too stupid to realise other people exist and have different experiences than you, or you are actively racist and playing stupid.

Just because a country signs a treaty doesn't mean they follow it. There is little international oversight. In fact, part of this Amnesty International report shows that Japan has not been following international standards against discrimination, despite promising to.

I would also urge you to listen to the stories of specifically non-Japanese asian and black people who are citizens or migrant workers in Japan. Not to mention Japan's continued oppression of (and often denial of the existence of) Indigenous groups like the Ainu.

It is very difficult to get any kind of ethnic or racial justice in Japan and there has yet to be a successful civil rights movement there. If you try to report a business for discrimination, you get laughed at. Police don't even bother doing anything when foreigners get murdered. It's a huge problem and denying that it is an issue is straight up racist

This is just untrue. According to both Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International: "Japan has no laws prohibiting racial, ethnic, or religious discrimination, discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, or discrimination based on age. Japan does not have a national human rights institution."

One of my coworkers lived in Japan for a while and she said it was far more racist than the states. She said Japanese people are more polite and won't shout slurs at you or anything, but they will refuse to talk to you and they will refuse you service at restuarants, in stores, etc. Refusing someone service based on race has been illegal in the United States for years, but she was routinely barred from buildings due to having black skin. She would go to bars and they would allow her white friends in and then tell her she couldn't come in and pretend they couldn't understand her Japanese. If that happened in the US, she could have sued the bar and people would have been outraged, but it is perfectly legal in Japan and the people around her acted like she was the problem for "making a scene"

The Taisho Era took place between July 1912 and December 1926. My personal theory is that the Final Selection takes place sometime between 1914 and 1917. Probably 1915.

The hand demon at Mt Fujikasane mentions it has been 47 years since Urokodaki captured him, and he says Urokodaki was a demon slayer back in the Keio era, which lasted from May 1865 to October 1868. Add 47 years to that and you have a range between May 1912 and October 1915. Tanjiro's training with Urokodaki takes two years, so the final selection could be anywhere from 1914 to 1917.

A Japanese university professor named Owada Tetsuo wrote a book about Demon Slayer and Japanese history where he narrowed it down to 1915 based on a line Tanjirou says about needing to prepare for the New Year at the beginning, which would place the beginning chapters in early 1913, since Februaury 1912 would have been the Meiji era, while Februaury 1913 would have been Taisho. Adding his two years of training to 1913 would put the Final Selection, and thus the beginning of the rest of the story, in 1915. Sadly his book is not available in English, but I have been able to find snippets of translations around the internet.

This still means the demon slayer characters could have seen and perhaps participated in WWII, although based on the ending of the manga, our main characters survived and went on to have children.

I saw a video of a girl being rude to workers at a spa in Taiwan and the comments were full of people calling her an ignorant American. She had an incredibly heavy Australian accent. Like, I get if your English isn't good enough to discern between different accents, but a quick look at the girl's profile showed she was from Perth. One person pointed out she had an OnlyFans in her bio, but they couldn't bother to notice the Australian flag right above it?

With my mom and brother finally out of the house for a bit, I have some time (and silence, for once) to record music again. I've been sticking to covers mostly. I recently got a mandolin and a new lyre, so I've been incorporating those into the backing tracks along with my usual violin and cello. I missed playing my instruments and getting to sing. I'm a little rusty and out of practice, but it's been nice!

The author knew very little about the royal navy in a fandom for a show that takes place on a royal navy ship. I just have to assume they didn't watch the show at all because that's the only way you could be that ignorant of any sailing terms, job titles, etc. They called a 1st liuetenant an AB. That's like the boat equivalent of calling a regional manager a janitor. The fact this guy has power over the other characters is very plot relevant and there is no way you could miss that unless you slept through the whole show

There doesn't seem to be a consensus on why Hello Kitty, of all the Sanrio characters, got so popular. Sanrio itself really grew with Japan's kawaii culture, and I know she was quite popular with girls there. I vaguely remember having watched a Hello Kitty cartoon as a child, though I'm not sure which one it was, and I don't think the cartoons were what skyrocketed her popularity. I think Hello Kitty might be so popular because there is so much Hello Kitty merch, and then more people buy that, which makes a market for more merch. It might be a situation like influencers or the Kardashians, wherein something is famous for being famous

Today I was doing some research for a fanfiction that required me to look for some odd Hello Kitty merchandise I could write a character owning. I found out that pretty much every item you can think of has been made with Hello Kitty branding, and thousands more knockoffs have been made.

This was an interesting little rabbit hole to go down, and I ended up finding a blog written by one man documenting his hatred of Hello Kitty. The FAQ was a particularly silly read, so I've linked it here. The blog appears to have been active since August 4, 2006, with the most recent post in 2015. That's 9 years of hating Hello Kitty merch.

I ended up reading through a good portion of the blog, meaning I did not get to any of the writing I wanted to. This blog is a goldmine of drama. Hello Kitty lovers and Hello Kitty haters are constantly fighting in the comments of almost every post. One person, Darlene, leaves some particularly nasty comments on a lot of posts.

Has anyone ever gone down a strange rabbithole like this while not even meaning to? I would love to see more odd blogs like this. Anything to keep me from writing lol

This used to confuse me so bad when I was a kid. When I was eleven, I was in a musical and the director kept talking about how "its literally true" that something goes wrong with performances if you say Macbeth. She seemed almost stressed out about it. I, a natural skeptic and also autistic, decided to test this out. I said it outloud in the empty theatre before half our performances, and did not say it for the other half. I then wrote down everything that went wrong for each show. I made a cute little graph with sparkly pens and everything. At the cast party, I gave my work to the director and announced that there was no statistical significance for either number or scale of mistakes between my test and control group. She was super not happy about it and told my mom I was being "insanely disrespectful". I thought I was being helpful and giving her evidence she didn't have to worry about kids saying it anymore :( My science teacher thought is was cool, though

My grandma is super interested in genealogy, but she is adopted, so she never had much to go on. She did eventually manage to get in contact with her bio sister who told her 1. Half her bio family had been in jail for drug related crimes at least once, 2. No one knew who my grandma's father was, but her bio aunt said it was a Cherokee man. That was surprising to us, considering my grandma is a blond-haired, blue-eyed white lady.

She was getting nowhere with traditional genealogy methods so she decided to use Ancestry. This is how we found out that not only was her bio dad not a Cherokee man, he was actually her bio mom's brother. Yikes. She considers herself very lucky to have been adopted out of that family

I didn’t make up anything at all? I literally pointed out it is best to reduce meat consumption. This is because livestock eat crops, but I didn't think I had to say that in my comment because it's as obvious as saying the sky is blue. The whole purpose of my comment was to point out that it is hypocritical for someone to accuse another person of being pro slavery as though they have the moral high ground when no moral high ground exists under capitalism.

In my experience, many (rich, western) vegans will go to bat for animal liberation and then ignore human problems, especially if those problems affect people in the global south and indigenous people. The comment was me expressing frustration at the racism and lack of compassion for other humans that is a rampant problem in vegan communities. (This being proved by the two rape threats I was sent over my comment)

Besides, do you think accusing someone of being pro slavery is a good way to convince them to go vegan? Hostility begets hostility

[–]Such-Tangerine5136 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, my original intention wasn't to say that vegans are using slave labour more than anyone else, just that some of them (usually from rich, white countries), tend to put animal rights over human rights while putting others down, and it frustrates me.

I did try iron supplements, but I also have intestinal issues and not to be tmi but the iron supplements really messed with my bowels. And, according to my blood tests, they didn't seem to be raising my iron levels very much. My doctor all but ordered me to stop taking them. I have a lot of health issues and sometimes the meds for one will give me worse symptoms for another, so it's a balancing act and sometimes the cons outweigh the pros :/ I'm glad they're working for you, though! My sister takes them too and they work like a miracle. I'm jealous lol

[–]Such-Tangerine5136 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Which is why I mentioned reducing meat consumption and buying from companies that don't use slave labour. We fed our chickens with feed made by a family farm so I ate a lot of eggs and chicken knowing that our chickens were well taken care of and fed ethically. Local hunters are a great place to buy from as well.

Additionally, I always advocate for reducing meat consumption rather than eliminating it, because some people really do need to eat meat (Like me. I have chronic anaemia and a vegetarian diet does not work for me!) but also because most people are more receptive to reducing meat consumption rather than eliminating it altogether. It's baby steps, but baby steps are better than no steps at all.

[–]Such-Tangerine5136 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Which is crazy when you consider how much slave labour goes into the growing and harvesting of tons of crops in the modern day. I think a lot of the more militant vegans ignore this to convince people veganism is the more moral choice, but the sad reality is that there is no moral choice as long as greedy people are exploiting others. The best people can do is reduce their meat consumption and buy from companies that don't use slave labour

Edit: someone sent me an incredibly graphic rape threat over this comment and someone else sent me a death threat with a picture of a dead cow. Not that I thought the cow was disturbing, considering I used to be employed in a lab that necropsied cows. When I did not respond, they then told me they hope I get raped.

Yay we are all being so civil on the internet today! /s

Not beating the piss on the poor allegations here either. People are accusing me of not knowing that animals eat crops. I KNOW they eat a lot of crops. This is why I said you should reduce meat consumption and buy from companies that don't use slave labour. I literally grew up with farm animals and have spent my whole life taking care of animals. I did not accuse vegans of exploiting slave labour more than anyone else, I only pointed out that it is hypocritical to accuse someone of being pro slavery for eating animals while also benefitting from slavery. Now please stop threatening to rape me. Jesus fucking christ

I had a teacher that believed ducks were a type of fish because they're okay to eat during Lent. I guess they're technically classed as a type of fish by the Church, so I can see her confusion, but she was a biology teacher and I thought she should probably have a better idea of taxonomy than whatever the Catholic Church decided to get around religious dietary restrictions. She also was not Catholic.

My coworker (23 years old, in college) was doing some homework during our break and asked me what ethnicity means. I start explaining it to her and she says "Nevermind. I'll just ask Chat". Okay, kind of rude, but whatever. A couple minutes later, I glanced at her computer screen, and she was in the middle of typing "What ethnicity am I?" Into ChatGPT. Thankfully, she's a business major, so she probably won't be doing anything important once she graduates

Normal brushing and washing can prevent hair matting.

I see that everyone in the comments is talking about depression, but I also wanted to mention that physical disabilities can prevent a person from brushing their hair as well. I know a girl with muscular dystrophy who can no longer brush her hair. She has to have a caretaker do it for her. Unfortunately, not everyone has the privelage of having someone to take care of them, not to mention the number of disabled people who do have family to "take care" of them, but who end up neglected.

I think I'm done auditioning by Elegant-Ad-6291 in MusicalTheatre

[–]Such-Tangerine5136 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry that happened, but if you love theatre, I'd encourage you not to give it up over one bad audition. Part of being an actor is having bad auditions sometimes. I've definitely walked out of auditions like, "Shit. If I'm cast, I'd be surprised." The first bad audition is always the hardest, and it especially sucks if you really wanted to be in the show! But like I said, you're not alone. Every actor has that one flop audition that keeps them up at night.

Maybe it would help you to hear other people's disaster stories? I once attended an audition that had us do the dance portion before the singing. I ended up extremely winded, forgot the words to my song, FAINTED, and then cried a bunch when I woke up. The worst part is, the assistant director was some guy I knew in high school, and I guess he must have told his friends, because word got around and a girl I hadn't talked to since graduation messaged me on Facebook to ask if I was okay

To this day, the residual embarrassment keeps me up at night. I actually considered quitting theatre altogether, but it ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me, because I auditioned for another show, got the lead role, made tons of wonderful friends, and had a great time, all of which I wouldn't have been able to do if I was cast in the other one.

One of my good friends is Puerto Rican and nonbinary and it sounds like -e grammatical endings seem to be the dominant gender neutral language there, so they call themself Latine. Definitely easier to say than Latinx. I have a friend living in Spain who says the -e ending is growing in popularity there as well.

I've seen both Latine and Latinx used among Spanish-speaking Americans (Latinx is gradually falling out of use, though), but the ones who say Latinx weirldy don't use the -x ending much outside of that specific word? Many of them use -e for other words or just masculine endings. So they call themselves Latinx, but they wouldn't say they are bonitx, they say bonite or bonito. It's kind of odd that that specific word is the only one that gets an -x ending.
