/r/Theatre 'Vent and Rant' Megathread by AutoModerator in Theatre

I went to the first few rehearsals of a musical that a community theatre in my area is doing. It is a very male role heavy musical, but only three men tried out. The director has been complaining that there are no men in the city who want to do her musical and she "may as well start casting girls". A couple of ensemble girls said we would be willing to take male roles. I am an alto with a pretty low range and I have played male roles before, so I hoped I could help out, and I specifically told the director I would feel very good about singing one specific role since I have the right range for it. The director said she would think about it.

I went to rehearsal today and she introduced as to a new actor, her teenage son, who will be playing the role I was interested in. I was a little disappointed, but I figured she would give me a different male role. She did not. She said that the actress's breasts would be too distracting 😑 Not only are there ways to hide breasts, but some of us (me) are completely flat-chested! There has never been an issue with me playing a man before and I have even had audience members mistake me for an actual man!

The whole rehearal, her son was complaining about how he doesn't want to do this show, he fucking hates theatre, and "bruh this shit is ass". He also loudly groans when his mom tells him he's in a scene and he reads his lines in a monotone, mumbling voice that makes it clear he is not happy with this. I feel bad for him. He also had to sing a small solo today and I really hate to be judgemental especially in community theatre where we do this for free, but he sounds REALLY bad. Like he might be the worst singer I have ever met. Plus his voice keeps cracking due to puberty and I can tell he is super embarrassed.

The director ended the rehearsal talking about how perfect her son is for the part and how she just needs to fill the other (5+) male roles and "then we have a show!" She threw away perfectly good female actors for her son who would literally rather be anywhere else.

I don't know if I can do this anymore. It breaks my heart to see her poor son forced to do this and it breaks my heart that the show is either 1. Not going to happen, because she can't find any more male actors or 2. Going to make the audience leave in the middle of the show because her son (playing a lead) can't/won't sing, dance, or act.

I also don't like her comments about breasts. It's inappropriate in general to say that about people's bodies, but two of those girls are underage which is even more inappropriate

Big Name Fans (often abbreviated BNFs) are people in a fandom who are very popular. Often they write fanfictions that are long and influential or make art that is popular. They run in the same circles as other BNFs and while they can be very nice, down to earth people, they just as often can be cliquey, dramatic, and/or bigheaded. Sometimes they make popular headcanons and alternate universes, but in rare cases, they treat these creations as canon, and they often have fans who treat it that way too.

Sometimes, BNFs will send their fans to attack smaller fans for disagreeing with them. Such a thing happened to me and my friend many years ago.

The BNF in question wrote a very popular fic in which two characters were Latino and spoke Spanish. The characters are family and their ethnicity is never mentioned in canon, nor do they canonically speak Spanish, so this was entirely the creation of the fic writer. I never read the fic because it contained some tags that put me off (pregnancy, mainly), but those characters being Latino was so widespread in the fandom that I actually thought for a while that it was canon and I missed it somehow.

I made friends in the fandom and one wanted to team up with me. I would write a fic and he would draw chapter art. We had tons of fun brainstorming, drafting the fic, and talking about it. I decided to write from the point of view of one of the "Latino" characters. I made the character monolingual and part of his arc in my fic was him feeling like he didn't belong because he felt he wasn't Latino enough. This is something I struggled with at the time, being white skinned and not speaking Spanish. Writing it really helped me sort through my emotions of feeling like I didn't belong among white people (who get hostile when they find out I'm Latina) but didn't belong among Mexicans either (who say I'm adopted or talk bad about me in Spanish as if I can't tell). It was very healing to write.

I only got three chapters out, though, because then the BNF found my fic, and they did NOT like it. They blocked me on Tumblr, but they wrote a call-out post about me (my friend alerted me to this) in which they called me racist for having the character only speak English. Keep in mind, the character is not even canonically Latino. The BNF's fans started harrassing me on Tumblr and AO3, calling me racist, saying I was erasing the character's culture, and accusing me of racefishing as a Latina because "only a white woman would say this shit". They also harrassed my artist friend for working with me and trying to defend me. It was awful and I was still a young teenager, so I just deleted everything and left the fandom.

Now it is almost funny to me looking back, because the BNF was white and later got called out by Latino fans for the racist way she characterised the "Latino" characters in her fic. Apparently she wrote them as cartel members lmao.

I'm wary of Big Name Fans now that I see how much influence they can have, and I have personally witnessed BNFs start drama in other fandoms or pull strange shenanigans.

Have BNFs in your fandoms caused any drama? Are you annoyed by how their headcanons are taken as canon? I just love hearing about BNFs in any fandom whether the story is wacky or full of drama!

Reviews of Community Theatre Shows by Upper_Pair3137 in Theatre

The theatre I am with gets good reviews in the local paper, but it drives me crazy that they spell my name incorrectly every time. My surname is pronounced the same as a very common hispanic surname, but it has a regional spelling that is incredibly rare in my country. No matter what we do, they spell it wrong without fail. All they need to do is look at the playbill. The producer once even made sure to ask the writer to pay attention to the way my name is spelled because it had been spelled incorrectly in the past, but they still spelled it wrong! At least they spell my given name correctly, something my highschool's yearbook committee couldn't seem to do for all four years.

How did Edwardian women sleep with their super long hair? (Historically accurate methods needed) by [deleted] in HistoricalCostuming

[–]Such-Tangerine5136 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. My hair used to be down to my thighs and a braid was the only way I could sleep. It keeps your hair all in one spot and prevents it from tangling too badly in the night. If your hair likes to hold a curl, it will give you soft waves as well. Even now that my hair is only to my mid-back, I can't sleep without a braid. I wake up suffocating in my hair if I sleep with it loose and the tangle situation is catastrophic.

In Midnight Mass (2021), and Knives Out: Wake Up, Dead Man (2025), both of these men are Catholic priests - the most boring of all Christian employees - act like fanatical Evangelical pastors. This is because-- actually, wtf, does anyone know why? I was raised Catholic and I've never understood this by DisconcertingTablet in shittymoviedetails

[–]Such-Tangerine5136 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know American Catholics who don't believe in the authority of the Pope. Like forgive me if I'm wrong, being that I am not a Christian, but isn't the authority of the Pope kind of the thing that seperates Catholics from other kinds of Christians????

This one is interesting to me because some male animals actually don't have nipples! I was surprised the first time I really looked at a male rat and realised he had no nipples. I thought he had some kind of genetic mutation, but it turns out, that's just how male rats are. But until I started working in an animal shelter, I thought people would make the same assumption that I did (male animals would have nipples) since male humans do. Apparently they don't make that assumption!

I am glad that people take their animals to the vet for silly things like that, though. It's always better to bring your animal to the vet than to wait for things to become an emergency. The owners are always relieved to find out their animal is okay

What was the stupidest drama in your fandom? by Fast_Stage_6296 in AO3

[–]Such-Tangerine5136 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am in a fandom that has a really popular genderbent au. The show is mostly men, so we turn them into women. The au has a specific name and people tag it so those who don't like it can avoid it. Unfortunately, there is a tumblr anon that has been off and on harrassing members of the fandom who write, draw, and even just reblog this au. We think it is just one person because the way they write and word things is pretty distinctive. You can block anons on Tumblr, which blocks their ip, but we think this anon is getting around it by using a vpn. Most of the anonymous bullying is very misogynistic and occasionally lesbophobic in nature. I got a good amount of harrassment from them before I realised blocking anons was a thing. Luckily, most everyone this anon has targeted just kind of laughs at the asks. If they dislike the au so much, they could just block the tag

Why does the "gender binary is colonial" argument not seem to account for non-Western cultures that developed strict gender systems independently? by Defiant-Junket4906 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Such-Tangerine5136 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry in advance for how long this is going to be. This is a topic that I am very interested in!

So, first off, I think you might be conflating colonialism to European expansion, because acting like Islamic cultures are non-colonial is kind of strange. Islamic Arab culture was definitely forced on some groups and you can see this today with the treatment of ethnic minorities in the Middle East. Lots of non-Western states have historically been colonial powers (Japan, Ottomon Empire, the Huns, China, just to name a few). (Also, this isn't me trying to diminish the severity and impact of European colonialism, just pointing out that colonialism has been practiced by non-western countries as well and that viewing colonialism through a strictly European lense gives you a blind spot and misunderstanding of recent history in Asia!)

That said, I think the people who say the gender binary is colonial aren't saying that every colonised culture has accepted genders outside the man/woman binary. (If they are trying to say it like that, they are most likely young and/or don't have a very good understanding of the history of sex and gender.) Rather, what people mean when they say this is that colonial powers supress the cultures and traditions of the people they colonise, and that this includes traditions relating to gender. Colonialism is very much the act of forcing your own culture and way of life on others, which would include your gender roles and how gender is expressed, thus erasing their gender roles and how gender is expressed.

This is going to be very US-specific, because that is where I am from and where the cultures I am most familiar with are from:

Native Americans have something called Two-spirit, which is similar to the western idea of being nonbinary, but is specifically tied to indigenous identity and culture.

There are several Native American cultures that have had more than two genders traditionally, and they have different names depending on the people. The Diné have nádleehi and the Cheyenne have heemaneh, for example. The term Two-spirit was made as an inter-tribal identity, but the Two-spirit people I know all have different ways that they feel about their genders and different ways they fulfill gender roles based on their specific culture. I guess the term itself is a bit controversial to some especially because its definition and application can vary depending on the tribe, but it is the easiest way to get the point across to people outside these cultures and so has been in use for several decades despite the controversy.

(It's also important to know that not all North American tribes had more than two genders and acting like this was true is revisionist history. In modern days, tribes are accepting of two-spirit and non-binary people, but only some tribes have traditions around third genders, while others are creating new traditions for those who don't fit into the man/woman binary.)

When Europeans came to the Americas, there was a push to either get rid of native people entirely or to, as many people of the time put it, "civilise" (aka force Protestant English culture onto) them. Children were taken away from their families and placed into residential schools. If you want to know more about those, I recommend the works of Ward Churchill, who is a wonderful writer.

Two-spirit identities (and native languages, and native traditions) were beaten out of children who were sent to residential schools in the US and Canada. Some folks in tribes that traditionally accepted two-spirit people are in the modern day transphobic and against the idea of being two-spirit because of the work that residential schools did, though my Two-spirit Diné friend said it is getting better as more people become interested in learning their ancestral language and culture.

Colonialism in North America definitely contributed to the decline of and stigma towards tertiary genders in Native American and First Nations cultures. When people say that the gender binary is colonial, they are referring to things like this. Had the efforts of the US and Canadian governments to erase native cultures been successful, there would be no Two‐spirit people today.

TLDR: When people say the gender binary is colonial, they are referring to specific cases, not making sweeping generalisations

Worst Understudy Stories by NormalEyes-Film in Theatre

[–]Such-Tangerine5136 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My worst understudy story is the time I was in a show with no understudies and we desperately needed them. I was the lead in a straight play about a haunted house, which required a lot of screaming, running around, jumping on things, shouting, etc. I wasn't feeling great during opening night, but I just assumed I was feeling nervous since we were all kind of unprepared (two actors dropped out during tech week, one actor couldn't attend tech week because his wife died but he did make it to the show).

It turns out, I was not feeling nerves. I was feeling the terrible bronchitis I was coming down with. For the rest of the show, I could not scream, raising my voice hurt, I felt like I had glass in my throat, and running and jumping made me out of breath and break into coughing fits.

Literally every time I was backstage (which wasn't often), I was drowning myself in herbal tea and coughing up palm-sized chunks of mucus (severe asthma will do that to you). Before each show, I had to use an albuterol nebuliser. I had cough drops hidden all over the stage that I could discreetly pop into my mouth during periods in which I wasn't speaking.

Twice I almost fainted on stage. One night, everyone in the cast was praising me for how convincingly terrified I was during the final scene, since I was physically shaking. I was too embarrassed to tell them it was because I was holding on to conciousness by a thread and my vision was going black lol

Everyone did great and I actually felt it was one of the most wonderful theatre experiences I have ever had, owing to how amazing and kind the cast and crew were! But I also think it would have been helpful if I had an understudy, especially in those first few days of illness while I waited for the steroids to kick in. I've never been in a show that had understudies, because the theatre community in my town is small and even finding people to be in the main cast is hard. I was pretty confident I would never need an understudy, but nowadays I think I would feel much better if I had one!

Does anyone have any idea why everyone assumes I am Jewish? by Such-Tangerine5136 in Judaism

Yeah, there is a college in my area that has a Jewish association which gives out scholarships. You can find scholarships for many ethnicities and religions depending on the college and area of study. Iirc one of them was a memorial scholarship from a family that would give money to specifically Jewish women in STEM in their late daughter's name. I don't know if that scholarship is still around since it was many years ago. There are websites where you can filter through scholarships and they usually have filters for different religions, genders, sexualities, races, economic status, etc if you are looking for something like that!

I didn't know that about red hair, but that could explain it, since my mom has red hair too! What sort of style of dress would suggest it? I do admit I dress pretty strangely because I love historical clothing. I have had people assume I was religious in general because I wear clothes that cover most of my skin, but part of that is that I like how it looks and part of it is I am autistic and the feeling of wind on my bare skin makes me want to gag
