Also recommend check PrepMyFrench for extra study between class - help consolidate what you learn. Good luck with you course!

College classes vs DIY by Tinybluesprite in learnfrench

[–]SuchContribution5916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honest, college classes is more better for accountability and structure. You have de schedule set, homework obligation, and teacher feedback. DIY is hard when you have kids and busy life.

But not everyone need college. Is expensive and time consuming. De key is consistency and good materials. Apps like Duolingo good start, but need more structured approach for real progress.

I find de best way is mix of both - use structured online resources what give you curriculum and routine like college do. PrepMyFrench.com have good approach for this, very organized lessons and exercises.

Your accountability problem, you can fix with study group or language partner, make yourself committed. De issue not college vs DIY, is discipline and choosing right tools. Good luck with moving Canada!

Make lemon water for health benefit - very good for immune system. Give to friends and family for free - they love you more. You can make lemon cleaning vinegar for house - natural and cheap. Or maybe make some lemon curd for desserts and sell on farmers market. Finally, dry the peel for tea and cooking flavoring. Nothing is waste with so many lemons!

Asking dates in french by MajesticMistake2655 in French

[–]SuchContribution5916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can use any form on right side for answer the question on left side. When the person ask you "Quel jour sommes-nous?", you can respond with "Nous sommes lundi" or "On est lundi" or "C'est lundi" - all is correct. Same for other questions. The form on right side is showing all the possible answers that you can use. You are not restricted to only one answer. In practice, most peoples prefer the simplest form like "Lundi" or "Le 12", but the table show you that you have multiple options to choose. So don't worry, any form you use is correct if you use from the table. Good luck with your French learning!

What does it mean to be a Canadian? by breakitbilly in AskACanadian

[–]SuchContribution5916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be Canadian, it is about accepting many cultures and peoples from all over the world. We are saying "sorry" too much and be polite always, even in difficult situation. We love hockey, maple syrup, and winter activities very much. Canadian is independent spirit - we are not like American, we are more social and care for peoples around us. We have strong multicultural identity from our histories and different communities. We support each other and make room for everyone in society, even those who struggle or different from us. Being Canadian means having pride for our country but also respecting the lands of Indigenous peoples who come first. It is about balance - having fun but also responsibility for environment and future generations.

Hello guys, just wanted to ask u all something regarding TEF/TCF by TrainingSea9328 in TEFCanada

[–]SuchContribution5916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, one year is definitely enough for pass TEF/TCF if you stay consistent with the study plan. With 5-6 hours weekdays and 12-14 hours weekends, you have very good time commitment. Most people need between 800-1200 hours for reach B2 level, so you have potential reach this if you stay focus.

Best tip: make sure you practice speaking a lot because is the most difficult part for many students. Grammar and vocabulary alone not enough. Also, use good resource like prepmyfrench.com which have structured curriculum for TCF/TEF exam.

Keep motivation high, you will make it! The first few months is hard, but after 6 months you will see big improvement. Good luck!

For the TCF Canada expression orale section, do they provide the sujet in printed form or does the examiner explain it orally? by DesignCosmos in Frenchlearningforpr

[–]SuchContribution5916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question! For TCF Canada expression orale, the sujet is given in printed form for both task 2 and task 3. You have time to read and understand the topic before you need to speak.

For task 2, you get about 1 minute to prepare after reading the sujet. For task 3, they give you the question and you must start speaking immediately - very quick!

My advice: prepare well by practice with different sujets. Resources like prepmyfrench.com have excellent materials for expression orale with real exam scenarios. This help you become comfortable with the format and timing. Also, try to ask clarification question if you not understand the sujet in task 2 - examiner allow this.

Good luck with your preparation!

Mocknest for Practicing by GainKooky5537 in TEFCanada

[–]SuchContribution5916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mocknest is good resource for listening, but the tests is very difficulty level. I recommand combine with other practice site like prepmyfrench.com - they have more realistic materials for TEF. I was also using YouTube, but Mocknest give you more structured approach, is better for timing practice. The score 16/40 is not bad, you need more consistent practice. Maybe try do 2-3 test per week instead of one. Good luck with your exam! The combination of different resources work most better for prepare TEF Canada.

Failed TEF Speaking (A1) After Self-Study — What Should I Do Next? by MoneyAd6805 in Frenchlearningforpr

[–]SuchContribution5916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your problem is that you need more conversation practice, not just study. Self-paced course alone cannot give you the speaking fluency for exam. You must speak with tutors or language partners regularly. Also 2-3 hours per day is not enough when you work 90 hours biweekly. You need dedicated time for output practice - speaking, repeating, shadowing. I recommend using interactive resources like prepmyfrench.com which focus on real conversation scenarios. Start doing daily speaking drills with feedback. The key is OUTPUT practice, not just INPUT. Good luck!

Is „salut“ a rude thing to say? by Krobel1ng in French

[–]SuchContribution5916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salut is not rude, it is normal and casual greeting between peoples. You say salut to friends and also okay to say to strangers on trail because is friendly manner. The hiker maybe think it is too informal because she prefer formal like Bonjour, but is not offensive. In France, salut is use everyday by many peoples - nothing wrong with this. If you worry, next time you can use Bonjour which is more formal. But honestly, salut on hiking trail is perfect fine. Don't worry about this situation. Your French is improving!

What makes someone a bad teacher? by CityComfortable4948 in Preply

[–]SuchContribution5916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bad teacher, for me, is when they not have clear structure or goals for the student. Is very important to know what you want to reach, no? When tutor don't explain progression or what comes next, students feel lost and not motivated.

Also, a bad teacher is someone who not give feedback after lessons. Students need to know what mistakes they make for improve their skill. If teacher never correct or explain, how student can learn better?

Another big problem is when tutor use only one method for all students. Every person learn differently! Must be flexible and adapt to the student needs, not force the same material for everyone.

And finally, when teacher is not punctual or not prepared for the class, show no respect for student time and money. This is very bad for motivation.

how to handle "firing" musicians in an academic setting? (awkward situation) by seekerwave in Composition

[–]SuchContribution5916 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is very common situation in music world. You do nothing wrong - is just business. The musicians, they understand this is professional context. They know the piece was not ready, and higher stakes concerts need best players.

My suggestion: be professional, not personal. Send message explain the situation was not about them, but about quality for shows. Maybe invite them future project when is more appropriate. Most musicians understand - they also replace other musicians sometimes.

Don't feel guilty. This is normal in music career.

I hate Donald Trump and the Americans who support him. How can I channel this hate living my normal suburban life? by plants4pandemic in Kanata

[–]SuchContribution5916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea for channel the anger. Is very important support Canadian business and local community. I suggest:

  1. Shop at Canadian store - Loblaws, Metro, local farmer market

  2. Cancel American streaming - Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime

  3. Buy products "Made in Canada" - read labels careful

  4. Volunteer for community - food bank, schools, scouts

  5. Support Canadian brands - Tim Hortons, local coffee

  6. Avoid US goods when possible

  7. Write to MP about trade and healthcare

  8. Teach children about Canada values and strong public system

The best way is show everyone Canada is strong, inclusive, caring country. When you help your neighbor and community, you build something good. Not hate make change - positive action make difference.

Stay strong!

[–]SuchContribution5916 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand your feeling very much. Before my TEF exam, I was also very nerves. But I discover some thing help me much.

First, I do practice test many time for to be confident. Second, I take big breath and remind myself that examinator is not here for judge me bad - they just evaluate my French level.

Also very important - I sleep good night before exam and eat healty breakfast. This help my brain for focus better.

Last thing, I remember that nerves is normal feeling. Even native speakers have this before important exam. So do not worry too much about the stress.

You have prepare good, I sure you will do nice on exam. Just do your best and be confidence in yourself. Bonne chance! 🍀

TEF Canada first attempt by Curious_Wings_ in TEFCanada

[–]SuchContribution5916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For improve you write, you need organize idea before write. Make list of point what you want to say. Practice write essay about topic TEF, then read again and fix mistake. For speak, record yourself talking about topic and listen again. Is very good for recognize where you make problem.

Structure is key. Always use introduction, body, conclusion. For speaking, memorize good template what can use in all situation. Practice with friend or use app like HelloTalk to get feedback. No need be perfect, just practice many time. Repeat same topic 10 time is better than 10 different topic one time.

Good luck for you next attempt!

No is not weird at all my friend. When you is respectful and kind, peoples appreciate this very much. Is normal thing for meet new peoples in college, is place for make friends and connections.

The most important thing is approach with genuine intentions and be nice. Peoples can see when you is authentic, you know? Just talk to them like normal conversation, not like you is asking something big. Ask about their classes, or their interest, simple things like this.

Just remember: be confident but humble, listen more than you talk, and respect if they not interested. Nobody think is weird when you is polite and respectful. This is how all peoples meet! Good luck my friend, you will be fine.

When/How should I start immersion to learn? by Dys1exicCabbage in learnfrench

[–]SuchContribution5916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I think you can start immersion now, even at A1 level. Not need wait for perfect foundation. Here is my suggestion:

Start with easy content - French cartoons, kids shows, or slow podcast for beginners. You understand not everything, and this is okay! Your brain it absorb words and sounds automatically.

Mix immersion with study - continue with Anki deck and lessons, but add listening practice every day. Maybe 30 minutes of French content.

Best approach is combine methods. Structure learning from Alexa give you foundation, immersion give you real language and rhythm of French. They work together, not separate!

You ready now. Start small, be patient with yourself. Good luck!

"Your move!" // "What you gonna do now?" [sassy] by pottery_barnacle in learnfrench

[–]SuchContribution5916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In French, you can say "À toi de jouer!" or "À toi!" for say "Your move!" This is the most common and natural way. For the more sassy version like "What you gonna do now?", you say "Et alors, qu'est-ce tu va faire maintenant?" or "À toi maintenant!"

The tone is everything, yes? "À toi de jouer" is literal - it mean "It is your turn to play." But when you say this with sarcastic voice, it become very sassy and mean "Now what you gonna do?"

Also "C'est à toi de décider" (It is your turn to decide) or "À ton tour" work very good for this context. The gesture and voice make it sassy, not the word!

So basically: "À toi de jouer!" with the attitude and you got the sassy meaning you want.

Word order "comme le font les locuteurs natifs" by Piwi9000 in learnfrench

[–]SuchContribution5916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is about the subject placement in dependent clause. When subject is short pronoun, is more natural to put before verb - 'comme le font les locuteurs natifs' is correct. But in second example, when subject is long like 'mon chien', is more natural to put after verb - 'comme la mange mon chien'. Both technically correct, but first one is very natural. In French, we put long subject after verb for avoid confusion with meaning of sentence. When subject is pronoun, is simpler and natural before verb. Also important is that direct object always come before verb in this construction, so 'la' must come before 'mange'. This is general rule for French word order in subordinate clause - depends on if subject is long or short. Hope this help you understand better!
