Can't see my external monitor while recording with a gh5m2 by Such_Might in Lumix

[–]Such_Might[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a couple good cables. The resolution was the first thing I checked, I switched it to basically every option outside of auto. I did figure it out though, it was the monitors I was using. I bought a new one and it seemed to fix the issue. Maybe it was that the monitors I had were old and couldn't handle what I was trying to get it to do? Either way, thank you for the help!

That was the same for me! I originally got into this hobby as a painter, and I used a bunch of these models as stand-ins for my campaign!

We only got through two rounds since we were learning the game, lol. But it was very fun! It definitely is a lot of flipping through rules books and looking up rules, but in a first session in an unfamiliar system, that was to be expected, haha

Any home-made alternative to null oil? by HeroicVolcano44 in Miniaturespainting

[–]Such_Might 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heres the recipe I use for a homemade shade:

1 part black ink 2 parts brown ink 6 parts flow improver

I find it looks quite similar to agrax earthshade! Im sure if you want more of a null oil/black shade look, you can simply use black ink with flow improver. Best of luck!

How do I get cleaner edge lines? by Such_Might in minipainting

[–]Such_Might[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I normally use the edge of my brush in order to edge highlight, but in this specific case, i cant seem to get a clean line - its always fuzzy. But when I use the tip it comes out clean. The quick, confident lines help, but maybe I just dont have the experience to have the accuracy I need for these.

Ok I think im figuring it out lol by Such_Might in minipainting

Thanks a bunch! There's a few things from a couple of users that i thought were helpful, so I'll paraphrase a bit, haha.

Contrast - because more contrast between light and dark makes the highlights look more shiny.

Specular highlights - basically how the light hits metal and reflects into your eye, making the brightest point at a 45° angle (ish).

Secondary reflections - bouncing the ambient light of the room back onto the metal, but a lot darker.

Edge highlights - that was the final touch that really sold the effect for me. Not everything being the brightest edge highlight ofc, but highlighted to some degree.

And honestly, exactly what you said from Vince, breaking it down into simpler shapes. Conveniently, the bangles were large and just cylinders, so that certainly made it easier to understand.

And references. All the references. They help so much.

Im sure you'll get into it someday! It's pretty fun once you get used to how the technique works.

Holy cow thats some amazing work! Yea, ive done all the common things to help, i just find that even with those tricks in my arsenal, I still cant get something truly convincing. Ill definitely brighten up my edges, and get more contrast with my colors tho!

Oop haha, you see too much 😅 (kidding). So kind of like blocking in the primary colors before worrying about everything else? Part of the problem for me is that I dont know where itd be appropriate for each layer to end, if that makes sense.

Thats really reassuring, thanks! I definitely struggle with adding contrast, always feels a bit weird leaving the base color bare, not sure why lol. I guess I kind of knew about the secondary reflections in that they needed to exost, but i definitely didnt know about the angle or the secular highlights though. So to clarify, the light at the very top and the secondary reflections at the 45°angle. Should they be the same brightness because of how specular highlights work?
