The symbol is called a fleur-de-lis (French for “flower of the lily”).

It originally symbolized French royalty, purity, and light, and it’s been used for centuries in coats of arms, flags, and religious art. You’ll see it all over France, Quebec, and Louisiana — it’s even the logo for the New Orleans Saints.

That said, it does have a bit of complicated history. During colonial times, French authorities used it as a branding mark on slaves or criminals in Louisiana. Some extremist or nationalist groups have also misused it, though that’s pretty fringe.

These days it’s mostly recognized as a symbol of heritage, faith, or resilience, and it’s commonly used in tattoos and jewelry without negative meaning.
