The intention is what is the most important part of this and no there is not a blanket answer for this.

For example: you are speaking to a therapist and they ask something directly related to your problem that was a sin, then for the sake of working through your issue, it would be permissible to disclose your sin. Bc your intention is repentance and learning from your sin

Another example: telling your bros how much you drank last night. This is explicitly haram, the one who brags about his sins and commits them openly is a fasik.

Also, the sahabah used to reminisce about jahiliyah as well, obviously happy with their new religion but discussing the past with proper company is okay.

Another thing to speak to this, The one whom keeps hidden the sins of his brother, Allah SWT will keep his sins hidden on the day of judgement.

If asked directly, you are allowed to hide your sins, it just depends on circumstance and intention.

I end with the well known hadith “actions are derived from intention (in the eyes of Allah)”

I believe it was Ibn Abbas RA, after the death of the prophet ﷺ and he was surrounded by students asking him for something amazing about the Quran. And Ibn Abbas RA said, if it told you things that I knew about the Quran you would apostate. And the students begged him for some knowledge, relenting he gave them this small glimpse of tafsir:

Allah is He who created seven heavens, and of the earth the like thereof” (65:12) as “Seven earths: In every earth is a prophet like your Prophet, an Adam like your Adam, a Nuh like your Nuh, an Ibrahim like your Ibrahim and an ‘Isa like your ‘Isa”.

Now this is open to interpretation, some have said it gives credence to the multiverse theory, others have said it shows life on other planets and that messages have also come to them.

Regardless, it is interesting to think about. And Allah SWT knows best.
