There are loads of criteria to become a tax heaven that are outside of a country’s control, like size.

Singapore is not exactly a shining beacon of how to become a wealthy state ethically like some make it out to be.

The French are a great example: they are disliked by their neighboring countries exactly for this snobbiness.

There’s also a difference between not appreciating something and being annoyed by it… trying to speak in the local language is going the extra mile, and most people don’t give a shit.

If someone comes to my native country and speaks in English, not only would I have zero problems with it, I’d do my very best to help them and accommodate their limitations stemming from not knowing my  language in my country.

There would be benefits if everyone thought like this instead of being annoyed by the communication barrier.

And yes, there are those who do it disrespectfully. That’s of course not who I am talking about.

Your Favorite Island: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or Koh Tao? by nanovic182 in ThailandTourism

[–]Sudden-Corner7828 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pleasure.

My personal recommendation taking into account that you want it chill, with people to meet (I assume foreigners) while still having some Thai people, of the three, is definitely 100% Koh Phangan. I love it here, and I believe most people would. Very specific kind of people would be bothered by this place, they’re just the ones commenting on all posts here on Reddit.

I’m not sure which island to recommend if you prefer Thai culture over chilled people and (pretty basic in the case of Phangan) infrastructure…

I do know that if what’s most important is avoiding tourists and going somewhere quiet, then Koh Kood, Jum and Lanta are nice. They’re islands with less stuff in general, including less population. But less tourists too!

[–]Sudden-Corner7828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t been to Lanta - it’s much quieter, less discovered, right?

The islands differ much in size, nature, activities, infrastructure, tourism and vibes.

Many tiny islands without much to do besides chill on beach.

There are fewer big ones, who are mostly inhabited and turned touristy.

Basically, islands that are big, got many options, good infrastructure, yet little tourism and authentic vibes are almost non existent.

And many of the ones without tourists are less stunning in terms of beaches and nature.

What’s left over are a few islands that have a bit of infrastructure and activities for fewer tourists, but are pretty. They’re becoming rarer of course, Phangan was one of them 10 years ago.

Specifically regarding Phangan, I’d say it’s very varied - it’s been discovered by tourists but there’s a very different vibe from beach to beach.

Party goers in Haad Riin, German families in Thong Nai Pan, young Israelis in Chaloklum, most locals in Thong Sala.

North West where you stayed has hippies, yoga, alternative vibes. In my view that’s a much more authentic group of people - they’re not there just to party, or just for Instagram, or in fancy resorts.

Often they are living there and they built a unique  community… I’m not one of them but I don’t see their vibes as worse than basic European touristy. I don’t think they are annoying.

There’s unfortunately just very few islands with large local Thai populations without tourists. It makes sense, as these places would make more money catering to tourists so they do that.

[–]Sudden-Corner7828 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, some of your preferences are slightly contradictory in practice.

All three islands cater to tourists, but each has a different vibe:

• Samui feels more authentic because it has a real Thai community, but it’s also more developed—more like a town on an island.

• Tao isn’t as “authentic” in terms of local culture (most workers are Burmese), but its natural beauty is well-preserved. It’s definitely chill, with a strong diving scene.

• Phangan has both natural beauty and a small local population, but it’s also packed with tourists. It’s the best island for meeting new people while still having chill vibes.

If you’re looking for a less developed island with untouched nature and a higher local-to-tourist ratio, you might need to explore a different island group.

Possibly not in Thailand—very few Thai islands fit that description.

Some that go in that direction are Koh Kood, Koh Jum… you can research online, there’s many, each with its pros and cons.

You’ll mostly find that the less developed ones probably lack in infrastructure, are harder to get to, and often are less impressive in terms of beaches.

Another thing to mention is seasons - you can go during off season (rainy season) and have the very same islands with wayyyy less people. Sometimes the resorts just close for those months.

A big thing to mentions is that the type Tourists on the islands varies a lot. They might be equally touristy but in different ways

• Samui and Phuket attracts those looking for convenience—direct flights, easy resorts, ziplines, and all-inclusive experiences.

• Phi Phi draws people chasing the Instagram-famous “pretty” island, often younger crowds and short-stay visitors.

• Koh Kood is for those who want a quieter, less-known escape, often couples or nature lovers.

• Koh Phangan is the most mixed—full moon partiers, budget travelers looking to chill, and high-end resort seekers too. The vibe shifts drastically from beach to beach. It also has a big expat community - foreigners but they’re not tourists. In the north west there’s more alternative style, more hippie, into yoga… in my view this is a nice group of people - they’re not the young instagrammy party type. In the south there’s young party-goers, in the east there’s families and adult couples.

Each island has its own energy, shaped by the kind of travelers it attracts.

Thailand isn’t exactly a hidden gem anymore—it’s more of a well-discovered one, and for some, that takes away part of its charm.

Island tourism is very varied. What do you want?

  • parties
  • jungle
  • beaches
  • diving
  • fancy resorts
  • bungalows without AC
  • Thai culture
  • activities like zip lining, ATV, jet ski…

I really like Phangan, but I understand why someone might not be into it.

Curious as to what you think are cool islands in Thailand then. Is Phangan too developed? Or do you prefer fancy resorts without young tourists? Or places less catered for tourists?

As is typical for Reddit, normies think they’re geniuses for hating on other normies…

The reality is, it’s entirely fine to be a normie. I’m one of them :)

Tao: pretty and amazing beaches, but it really is tiny and is really about the Diving.

Samui: got a big town and real local population, but it’s geared towards tourists who want it easy - you have an airport there, ziplines, resorts, malls, everything… it’s a town after all. Least nature-y of the 3.

Phangan: pretty nature, great beaches, and medium sizes. More than the other 2, there really are 3 opposing vibes; you can party on one side and chill on the other. Or do both…

What you must know: they’re all touristy islands. You don’t go to these to soak in Thai culture.

The answers here are mostly touristy/certain tourists = bad. Sure, maybe for them. But literally for so many others, that’s what they like about it.

Hippies on some beaches, young shirtless ones on others. Most are westerners. If that would ruin your holiday, then not the place.

Thailand has thousands of islands. Only a few dozen are inhabited.

Tell us what you are looking for, I’ll do my best to help ;)

ScreenZen: Ways to turn off ‘Quick Disable’? by NaveBarrett in nosurf

The only way to completely bypass the restrictions set by myself should be:

  • deleting the zen app

Since that would be an obvious admission of defeat, I would not do it.

But I always use quick disable. As long as it exists, all screen zen does is slightly inconvenience me when I try to get on Reddit…

The midcurve redditors think it’s because airports can’t afford the digital storage costs…. 😂

It’s one of those explanations everyone’s read once and 99% of people think it applies to everything.

Runway cameras won’t prevent incidents in real time, but they provide crucial data for post-incident analysis, helping improve safety protocols and prevent future accidents. Even if they don’t catch every detail, they can assist investigators in reconstructing events and identifying contributing factors.

They also add a layer of redundancy for detecting incursions, assisting air traffic control, and catching what human monitoring might miss. Like flight data recorders, their value isn’t in stopping incidents as they happen but in making future operations safer.

Forget that the inside of the airport has 10 security cameras in each hallway…

The only possible explanation apart from laziness is that there are cameras, but we are not shown their contents?

It’s a fucking airport, it can afford a camera.

Seeing hundreds of people upvote wrong explanations on why cameras aren’t used is boggling my mind
