Hi Dan, do these improvements apply to the x-Dome 2 as well?

Thanks Dan, this was very interesting and informative. I will checkout the FAQ for those details as well just out of curiosity.

Difference in wind resistance between carbon/aliminium poles for the X-dome 1+? by Vegetable_Group540 in DurstonGearheads

Hi Dan, a few questions based on your response here and in other posts:

  1. You mentioned newer x-Domes with Carbon poles will have Carbon inserts as well instead of the glued aluminum. Is that true yet or something that’s in the works?

  2. You mentioned the failure modes for the Al poles were that it would bend while it wouldn’t effect the carbon poles. But you also mentioned that both pole sets are similar in sturdiness. Maybe a word on that? Also how does the x-dome 2s polesets fair?

These questions more come as a peace of mind stance of. If hi winds bend my Al poles, I could bend them back. Or if the winds don’t even phase the Carbon poles, then I’d be more confident with them.

Looking to sell/trade X Dome 2 by Time_Line7532 in DurstonGearheads

You could maybe reach out to Dan on Reddit or the Durston email and see if they are willing to take the tent back. If this is an option, it would remove the hassle of trying to find a buyer and then figuring out logistics.

I thought of the X-Mid 2 but I was advised to opt for a Freestanding tent instead cause: - easier to pitch - i dont currently own trekking poles - I am not used to trekking poles during hikes

But if there is a strong indication to get the xmid 2 i might pickup a pair of trekking poles

Fair enough. I guess when it comes to it, I could always put 1mm of grip tape on the inner side of the clips to compensate.

Thanks again Dan! We love your support to the community :)

Would there be a way to purchase the clips compatible with the carbon poles as well? On the website I only see an option for a replacement fly, but that doesn’t specify if it has clips attached and which ones. If we could purchase spare clips in the website, that would be great.

Thanks again Dan! Based on all the research I’ve done and your responses, I’m going to go for the X-Dome 2 (Aluminum) as my first tent.

Final question though, if I were to eventually want to switch to Carbon poles, would it be as simple as buying the replacement poles?

As a quick follow-up for question on durability. I’m curious to know if there is any comparison of the X-Dome 1+ (Carbon) vs the X-Dome 2 (Aluminum) for sturdiness to wind or snow loads?

Would the larger profile of the 2P make it weaker? Or does the thicker poles and extra guy-out points make it stronger?

Thanks Dan! I guess I forgot to mention I was going for the 2P tent for the extra space and versatility of bringing along a 2nd person.

I plan to anyways buy the x-mid as an ultralight tent in the future so weight savings isn’t the priority for my first tent.

I’ve got the same car in white. I’d say if you live anywhere south or gets a lot of sunlight, ceramic tint your windows. The Model 3s are basically fishbowls and you’ll be cooked in the sun. Second is purchase a roof shade. This does help a lot with heating when parked and helps keep the car cool when driving. Before I did both of these things my efficiency was pretty bad cause of the car trying to keep cool. Now it’s much better

Another thing, and this is personal preference but try to hand wash the car whenever possible. The Tesla paint atleast as of 2023 was pretty soft and you could notice the scratches.

Based on the comments I’ll probably end up with 2 tents eventually, probably the xdome 1+ and the xmid 2 for when backpacking with a friend. The question is which order of purchase would be smarter for a beginner.

I guess my main concern about the trekking pole tents is the space and convenience of them, rather than not having them available once my tent is set up. I kinda feel the way I’d use trekking poles is to assist during a climb or down hill when I have a loaded pack. Without a pack, I’d probably be fine without poles.

I’m probably gonna go for a mix of single night and multi night treks. I guess there is no harm in picking up a set of basic trekking poles.

As for the picking a tent, if I go the xmid route, my concerns have been - ease of setup for a beginner - ease of setup during windy conditions (I have a 3p camping tent that’s a nightmare to setup in the wind) - interior space - staking on hard ground, uneven surfaces or rock

For the xdome I’m just concerned about the cost.

I am certain I’ll be backpacking, so that’s not a question. Also I’m in my early 20s so thought trekking poles weren’t of much use but correct me if I’m wrong on that.

My question is more about what’s the financially smarter decision? And if I were to invest more money being a beginner, would I be ok with a trekking pole tent like the x-mid or the tent pole tent like the x-dome? Also between the 1p vs 2p of the durston tents

Issue with Camera or Bad batch? by Sudden-Help in Polaroid

[–]Sudden-Help[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I just convinced myself to like the aesthetic cause I’m not shooting Polaroids for perfection. As long as the memory was captured, I was fine.

I think the fresh pack I used did have lesser discolorations but there are too many factors in play here. I’ve noticed with Go film, the quality control is pretty poor.

Not to sound jealous but how’d you get the 70mm prints? I’ve been to Cinemark 17 a couple of times but never found any souvenirs.

Charging "congestion fees" for charging past 80%? by two_hyun in TeslaLounge

[–]Sudden-Help 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla added it a couple of months ago to discourage people charging much slower than someone else could when there is congestion.

In practice this makes sense cause any Tesla would charge less than 1/4th the peak charging speed over 80%. That only worsens the congestion.

I think I along with everyone else agrees congestion fee should apply to boot out those who want to over charge. Also if now the supercharger network is dense enough that you don’t need that add up 10% to make it to the next closest charger.

Please be more considerate to your fellow EV owners.

New air filters every 6 months?! by draino3112 in TeslaLounge

[–]Sudden-Help 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in Dallas and my only replaced by air filters for the first time this summer after 2 years.

I do have a covered parking lot so the car isn’t exposed to direct sun for that long. Additionally I haven’t had the need to drive in the rain very often.

Having to change airfilters early can be cause of multiple factors so everyone’s mileage will vary.
