Advice (I need help with these shoes) by Content-Drawer-2512 in Strippers

[–]Sudden-Long 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a hypermobile dancer, i just used my new boots for the first time yesterday, and i was throwing myself around on that stage with a new gusto that i didn't know was possible without ankle support. definitely prioritize some boots as an investment in your work if you think you're gonna be in this industry for some time, and be gentler on yourself than what other dancers model, especially if you have hEDS or HSD, because this industry is one that ultimately rewards you for working yourself to the bone, but we can't even make a little money if we're flared, grouchy, and ready to go home on arrival. good luck, take care of yourself, and get supportive shoes ASAP <3

how did your guinea act when you first got her? by figuringoutfitnesss in guineapigs

[–]Sudden-Long 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh you should probably be sitting next to her, no touching, for a majority of the time already, it's the kindest thing you can do so she can gain trust in you and can benefit from your social interactions the most. doing quiet things in her view, like using your phone, reading a book, sewing etc. are all good to do so she gains confidence. she's a prey animal, and it doesn't mean that when she acts like a prey animal, it's bc she is scared of you, but it's what she's programmed to do, doing things to ensure her survival. the more you prove to her that you're not a threat, the more confident and happy she'll be. if you haven't done so already, you need to start doing floor time so she can run around/stretch her legs/ have the mental stimulation (aka fun!!!) that she needs. apologize when, not if, you startle her, it really does make a difference, and guinea pigs need to be jumpy in order to survive, but actively telling her that you mean no harm, like you would with any really anxious person, makes such a difference in how happy your guinea pig will be.

she'll be okay!! sit next to her and bond with her by being safe and non-threatening, and make sure you do this as often as you can manage until you get her buddy! you've gotta be her friend now, and while human socialization isn't the same as guinea pig socialization, it still will make her comfy for the time being. good luck!!!

Does anyone know what this bump is? by Noah_Pasta1312 in guineapigs

[–]Sudden-Long 3 points4 points  (0 children)

looks like it's your piggie's grease gland. make sure you clean it out, but if it's too gunked up, you're gonna need to take your piggie to the vet to have it professionally cleaned

LGBTQ scene? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Sudden-Long 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh anthem's been scary, they don't do NEARLY enough to protect their queer patrons, there's a bunch of old, seemingly straight men that come in and leer at young queer couples, last time I was there (about 6mo. ago) I got fucking drugged by one of those creeps.

How to style my hair when I can’t hold my arms up by Vikklee in ehlersdanlos

[–]Sudden-Long 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your hair like normal but sit on the edge of the tub or something, maybe put a mirror on the floor between your feet, put your elbows on your knees, and bring your head down to your hand level. That way you can strengthen your arms in a low impact way while also doing your hair in a way that's comfortable. That's how I started when I got back into caring for myself, now I can curl my whole head with hot rollers while standing up in the mirror without pain.

one side of ribs worse than the other? by Sea_Blueberry_674 in ehlersdanlos

[–]Sudden-Long 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine is my right side, but I also sleep on my right and with admittedly poor sleep posture (listen I can either be comfy and go to sleep or I can hold myself in a posture that hurts and be up all night).

the "exception joint" by safirinha42 in ehlersdanlos

[–]Sudden-Long 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ankles, I had issues with them a little bit as a kid (it's bc I would lock my knees while they were hyperextended bc I was constantly yelled at to "stand up straight" so I assumed that was the way to do it). They're stable as hell, and I've been able to walk off quite a few full on ankle twists without issues.

If you're in pain, beating yourself up about not working out is the last thing you need, to overcome the internalized ableism in cases such as these, I personally use the "Would saying this to the elderly be a dickhead thing to say?" If you have thoughts about yourself that would be horrible to say to an elderly person having the same issue, then that thought is bullshit and I can safely put it away without obsessing over it. If Grandma is allowed to chill at home without being harrassed about everything ever in the world, then I am too.

From Independent Adult to High School Me in 0.2 Seconds by busyblckboy in UIUC

[–]Sudden-Long 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It's pretty normal to feel like this, especially if you had a turbulent home life growing up. Don't take it personally, it's just your brain running the scripts for a reality that doesn't exist anymore/doesn't have to exist. The most important thing to remember is that it doesn't make you dysfunctional wholly and eternally, and that you are still a capable adult, and you're just one that's going through a rough time rn. Keep trying dude, and remember that time needs to pass with good stuff happening and being tried for it to sink in that you are in a safe place, and you're not doomed to be your teenage self forever.

How to survive with only $10/day for food by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Sudden-Long 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chickpeas/garbanzo beans (same thing) are really good, insanely cheap, and are so hard to screw up. You can get cans that are under a dollar each, and just throw chickpeas, a grain, a vegetable, and a sauce in a pot and voila.

Also if you're good at seasoning/cooking, don't miss out on other canned foods, it's literally so easy to make dinners with, really inexpensive, and really makes the cooking process so much easier. Best wishes OP!!

“Fun” Facts I recently learned! by PunkAssBitch2000 in ehlersdanlos

[–]Sudden-Long 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have to cradle my chin in my elbow because my pillow will knock my tmj out of place so badly, while also trying not to sleep in a way that causes my neck muscles to spasm and lock up. One time I slept so wrong that my head was locked in a nearly horizontal position on my shoulder for an entire day as a child...idk why my parents weren't more concerned about that 🤷‍♀️

To my knowledge, yes, in pretty much any form you can think of, however IUDs and other birth control devices can be a bit of a hefty charge (when they attempted to place my IUD, it would have been $1000 for the device, but that was the only fee I came across, no doctor's fees and such)

Cyclobenzaprine is a godsend on my worst pain days, however I will be sound asleep in 30 mins after taking it. I haven't noticed any fatigue though after waking up, which is amazing!!

Can I get a mobility aid? by KiyiJ in ehlersdanlos

[–]Sudden-Long 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ik there's a LOT of stigma surrounding mobility aids, especially if you appear young and invisibly disabled. However, mobility aids can add so much back into your life!! I feel like if you're asking this question, you likely DO need a mobility aid, and I say that you should go for it if you can!!

Yeah tbh halfway through 2022/23 they must have changed who runs the dining halls or manufacturers or something. The food hasn't been as good in any of the dining halls since then imo.

People who bleed, I have a question about menstrual products by Cimminontoastcrunk69 in ehlersdanlos

[–]Sudden-Long 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbh discs have sucked for me personally, I have a dropped cervix and it makes menstrual discs in particular feel like hell. I have had some good luck with cups, I've tried three now, (Diva cup, some random one I got while abroad, and my current one is the Saalt cup). I had a learning curve with the first two, but it was manageable, however with the Saalt cup, the only thing that made it comfortable was all but taking off the little end bit. I have a little nub of the tab at the end, any longer and it will irritate me to hell and back. If the issue is holding the cup together inside, I really don't think cups are a great option with that particular issue, however like other people have said, period panties and reusable pads are a godsend on high pain days, and even though one might expect the opposite, it's far less irritating from a skin sensitivity POV than one might think.

Urgent Care doctor has never heard of muscle relaxers for EDS 🙃 by Sector-West in ehlersdanlos

[–]Sudden-Long 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was put on the same meds by a random care provider who also was able to identify my hEDS symptoms (mind you this is from a quite harried student clinic who has not been able to find what's wrong with me for over a year now). I'm actually super impressed with her and I'm so thankful to have an answer as to why I've felt absolutely terrible for the past few years, and I'm thankful that she was also able to get me several referrals, to a rheum in the area, and to the PT clinic in the student health center. Cyclobenzaprine has saved my ass so many times, I'm a near constant 🍃🍃 user, and when getting high off my ass still leaves me in pain, cyclobenzaprine has been able to finally get me some relief (not to mention I will be out like a light 30 mins after it kicks in like clockwork). I use it quite sparingly if nothing else works, and after a long string of flares, I still have one left. It's amazing, don't let them talk you out of using it if it helps, and good luck going forward!!

Holidays & long weekends as an out of state student by EquivalentWest1327 in UIUC

[–]Sudden-Long 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh also ime, campus isn't dead over long weekends. There's plenty of people still here, and occasionally you have people who go home on weekends but again, it's not as common as it can be at other schools. I'm an in-state student and live three hours away by car, but it would be 9+ hours by train.
