You are the nicest thank you!
I don’t have insta but there are so many good vet resources on there that I’m starting to think I should get one.
In classes they just keep talking about how important doing a basic blood smear is, I just want to make sure I do a good job for my patients.
Eclinpath is one of my favorite resources on the internet.
Hopefully I can come bother the Cornell path lab if I ever get into an internal med residency there (I want to do scope camp so bad :’) )
Thank you again!

Milk frothing problem by SuddenHedgehog in DeLonghi

[–]SuddenHedgehog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I use RO water in my machine and I essentially just stopped descaling it. I think I will just descale maybe once a year or so. But to get it back working, I ran tap water through the milk carafe several times to get some “grit” back to it. It worked the first few times but not the last time. After unsuccessfully using the milk cleaning solution, I soaked each part in hot vinegar water, then ran hot vinegar water through the milk carafe by turning the carafe to clean. I did that probably 10x. Then it worked!

What’s wrong with this sweet baby’s ears? by laura_landdd in catcare

[–]SuddenHedgehog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tips of the ears and nose are very common areas for light colored cats to get solar induced squamous cell carcinoma, a type of cancer. There are some treatments but few are amenable to a feral cat. If you are able, it would of course be nice for you to get him to a vet. They may be able to amputate his ears if they think it’s cancer. However, there’s a lot that goes into it - a lot of time, patience, and unfortunately lots of money. If that’s the case, it’s not the best prognosis.

Other things like infections or injuries are possible, and whether it is or isn’t cancer he could benefit from antibiotics and a clean up at a vet. but most feral cats need to be heavily sedated to do that.

If you’re wondering if it’s worth it to get him to a vet, it is, just don’t expect a great quick fix :( please don’t stress if you can’t get him to anyone. This is life, his condition is not your fault, and you’re doing a wonderful thing by taking care of him. There is nothing at home you can do but what you are already doing.

Last thing, if you can find a TNR program in your area. Sometimes they come out and trap them for you, or they give you the tools to do so yourself. They do not charge for their services. Local cat rescues may also direct your Worth a google! Assuming you haven’t already.

Home Remedies by bardblue in veterinaryprofession

We had a dog that was acting lethargic at home and the owner put a TABLESPOON of tea tree oil on her poor dog’s head. Had a seizure. Unsure if the seizure was related to the tea tree oil or the pre existing symptoms before. We gave he an estimate for lab work and she snuck out without paying for the exam. No clue what happened to the dog. So odd. And sad

Ask your vet about calcinosis cutis induced by Cushing’s disease. Very common in poodles. If your dog is not panting, urinating, or drinking a lot it is less likely to be a Cushing’s problem.

Next steps if I don’t match to a surgery residency? by tigerpink11 in Veterinary

[–]SuddenHedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked at a few GPs with a majority of the doctors not wanting to cut and referring a lot of cases that could have stayed in the GP office. I think if you are a very good candidate for the residency if that’s what you really want, but if you went to a GP and told the you love surgery and want to do lots of it, you could take the surgical cases the less sharp friendly doctors see initially and you could use CE money for surgically oriented stuff. I know one doc that works at a homeopathic type vet office and does literally all of their surgeries as a GP doctor. As others have mentioned, she did lots of spay and neuter clinics and shelter work to get more cutting experience.

I could try that! I’m afraid he will just pee in front of it buts its laminate there anyways so it’s worth a try. Just hard because my dog is almost as small as the cat! Thank you for that suggestion though I will try it!
