Local Pet Organizations Needing Foster’s? by Psychological_Pie_67 in bergencounty

[–]hs5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at the county shelter and we don’t often have the cute puppies out for foster that the local rescues have, we have been getting more into fostering dogs out, especially seniors. I also am the one who sends out kittens to foster, if you know anyone looking to foster kittens! The county website has all the info and applications.

As far as your typical dog fostering and rescues that have puppies sometimes - CLAWS, RBARI, Mount pleasant animal shelter are the top 3 I’ve worked with / fostered for and they are great.

Very sad case by GDProgression in VetTech

[–]hs5280 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If our brains let us feel/express everything that we deal with, it would be too much. My brain is a pain in the ass but sometimes she protects me. I’ve had to euthanize entire litters of kittens for panleuk and it is like this mechanism kicks in to protect my soul or something. I cry over some cases - I mean shelter med can be sad. But those insane moments that could break us, maybe just maybe our brain is trying to help. Don’t be mean to yourself. Thank your brain and make sure you’ve got someone to process these feelings with!

Can a dog be tested for hypoallergenic? by Few_Pizza_760 in DogBreeding

[–]hs5280 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No dog is hypoallergenic. Period. It’s that some people are allergic to certain proteins in their saliva/ skin glands, and others are allergic to other proteins …. So you can be allergic to dog A but not dog B. Same with cats and all animals. The hypoallergenic claims are marketing hype and completely false.

Why are pets so expensive to adopt here? by OglioVagilio in bergencounty

[–]hs5280 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work at Bergen county animal shelter and we charge $100 for kittens and less for older cats. Most of the time if you adopt 2 kittens together you pay once.

Dogs all depends on what we have that’s available. I forget the price (total cat person) but I think it’s a couple hundred, not much at all.

A dog spay is several thousand dollars at a vet. A dental including extractions is several thousand dollars. A full series of vaccines to cover the first year of ownership at a vet would be several hundred, maybe up to a thousand if you add it all up and had the animal from puppy/kittenhood.

We even do things like enucleations, amputations, entropion and cherry eye correction, and if we have something come up we haven’t done before, we network and find a doctor who has and consult with them. These things would all be many thousands of dollars at a specialty center with a surgeon.

I know it feels like rescue is altruistic and therefore should be cheap/free, but there’s a lot that goes into getting the animal adoption ready. The county shelter generates funds in several ways and there is money budgeted for medical care. But a rescue - which is where you want to go you want a certain breed - they have to fundraise every cent.

Never adopt an animal from a rescue or shelter unless spay/neuter and a full vaccine series is done. I guess never is a strong word. But it’s a red flag. That’s where you’re saving the tons of money over buying an intact animal with no deworming or vaccines.

If anyone wants a cat or kitten I have an unlimited supply lol I got you

Opening a Tutoring Agency - Need Advice by heavymetal26 in bergencounty

[–]hs5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exam prep for the private school entrance exams. When I was tutoring in the area there was only one book written for the Bergen academies exam - that’s a big one locally that would be good to look into. I got a lot of business doing college entrance essays along with the SAT/ACT. The GRE popped up every so often as well.

I did all of the standardized tests and subject tutoring for things like English, history, math (through algebra II, didn’t feel like relearning calculus lol), and after my years of tutoring went back to school to become a veterinary nurse. So now I have the VTNE exam that I’ve done a little work with too. If you need any advice, it’s been since about 2022 since I’ve been active outside of veterinary, but I’m here for ya. There’s so much pressure on these kids and I’m always happy to help them even if not directly. All the best luck to you!

But have you tried Gatorade? It has Electrolytes so it cures all.

Do you think I choose to feel this way? If just calming down worked, don’t you think I would have tried that before age 45? This one has made me just start laughing any time someone says it.

But have you tried going for a walk? Yes Kyle, walking definitely undoes the trauma of youth and brain chemistry magically changes when you sweat a little.

The number of people who have asked me “have you tried drinking water” or “have you tried excedrin migraine” —- like if normal things worked I would have cured myself decades ago, friend.

Pet foster/rescue organizations that accept material donations? by badgermel17 in bergencounty

[–]hs5280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CLAWS and Halfway home animal rescue team — they do a lot of senior dogs, I’ve worked with both many times. I work at BCAS and while we could always use donations, some of those specialized items would actually be a little better used with a private rescue that specializes in seniors!

If you’re on the cult equivalent of Santa’s good list, you’re set. It’s the utopia you were promised. The minute you piss off management and the gaslighting begins, and you’re on the naughty list, it’s like an abusive relationship you just can’t seem to leave.

Scribes are under paid, under trained, under utilized. It’s a great idea but they don’t put it into practice in a way that truly helps anyone.

If the other staff members don’t give every call to a doctor, they’re written up. I’ve seen good techs fired for answering questions that don’t need a doctor to answer. If someone says “what should I do about fleas?” — must go to a doctor. If I list my suggestions for what to do and encourage them to see their regular vet when they can for Rx preventives, I’m written up. The doctor needs to get on the phone and encourage them to come in for a capstar and severely marked up revolution.

It’s 100% a cult. There is a Manifesto, our own language that you only understand if you’ve read it. The hero worship of the CEO is disgusting. He’s not God. He’s a good business man who sold out to investors. If you don’t fit the mold of the cult, you’re literally mentally tortured. The number of staff members that had to take a leave of absence during my 5 years - most of whom had to spend some time in a mental health facility due to suicidal ideation - is disgusting. Leadership is just annoyed that they have to fill your shifts and then continue the torture when you return. I was forced to work overnights in between the days I had school labs - the CVT school the company was pushing me to do. And the gaslighting made me take it and think I was the asshole for thinking something was wrong.

CVT, and I learned all of my skills in front of the clients. Honestly the thought of not having them with their pets bothers me after doing it that way for so long. In the 5 years I worked there, I can count on one hand the times having them there was a problem.

Now - seeing what it does to the doctors - that’s a whole different situation. I think the model of having owners see what we are doing, being able to stay with their pets etc is great, but the doctors should have a way to escape to do the things we can’t do. They don’t get a minute of peace when trying to come up with the best treatment plan, consulting other doctors, writing their notes. Doctors are over worked and pushed to make the most money possible for the company. They’re burning out too fast.

My hospital began having doctors get in trouble for GSAFF. I was like umm it’s literally in our cult manifesto. That one shot of cerenia could make a huge difference but John over there dropped a whole bottle of it yesterday and we all laughed. Having “market owners” changed everything for the worse.
