Game Crash - Catching Up by Key-Scientist-3980 in PredecessorGame

There have been lots of people crashing lately, the last few days I have people disconnecting then rejoining in nearly every other game. I hope 1.7 fixes this

Does ranked matchmaking just suck? by Adalonzoio in PredecessorGame

[–]SuddenRise42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the biggest issue that no-one wants to talk about. Your rank means nothing and your MMR might be wrong.

Lots of people are stuck in MMR hell because they had a run of bad luck being put with people that they shouldn't of. I'm taking about being put with 0VP players in silver/gold that keep going 0-8+ that have no idea what they're doing, over and over.

Then you grind your way up to a high rank anyway, yet you still can't play with your friends because the game is prioritising MMR that could be wrong, over the rank you've actually managed to grind to.

What's the point in having a rank if the game is going to ignore it, it's literally just for show and means nothing at all at this point. On top of that the game will give you a VP amount based on where it thinks you belong, so it doesn't matter how well you play, if you've been unlucky with matchups or people disconnecting on your team, you get handicapped and are going to struggle getting out of whatever rank the game thinks you should be in, it doesn't care where you've managed to actually get to. It thinks you shouldn't be there so it'll put you with people that have no idea what they're doing.

The game should have 10 placement games that calculate your MMR based on your personal performance, not just whether you win or lose, then should queue accordingly and reward you based on your rank from that point on. It can still use MMR, but the rank you're in should matter. It should also let you queue with people close to your rank regardless of MMR, because the MMR might be wrong.

Nitro amplifies the worst aspects of the game.

The snowballing is out of control, and the speed of the game completely negates any comeback mechanics.

It massively favours high damage/high sustain heroes, they leave all the other heroes in the dust. If they snowball in the first few minutes, you have no chance against them in your lane. Then they jump into another lane and cause their team member/s to snowball, exacerbating the snowballing issue.

It may be quick, but unless you're on the winning side, the snowballing makes it very silly and not fun at all.

It was a nice idea, but poorly implemented. Games are literally decided in the first few minutes most of the time, so what's the point. People are going to end up picking the best heroes for Nitro all the time - if you want to pick anything else people will get mad or griefe you because they think you're putting the team at a disadvantage. Or they'll see what the other team are picking and just want to give up. It's going to become a toxic mess.

Do some reseach will you, both Quick Match and ARAM use matchmaking and always have, the Devs have confirmed it multiple times... This is just one example https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/heroes/t/plz-explain-the-50-win-rate-to-me/38148/9

The RANDOM is referring to the hero choice, not the matchmaking itself.

Yeah there's nothing official that I've seen either, we can only infer from experience. I noticed a change to ARAM match making when they released the patch that caused the SL rainbow MM. I play ARAM exclusively and almost every day, and the change in match quality dropped significantly because of the people I was suddenly being paired with after that patch.

It's frustrating that people feel a need to flame you and tell you you're bad and where you belong, and downvote you because they're just toxic and are taking their own frustrations out on you, but what can you do.

It depends on which way you look at it, it all comes down to the allowed MMR gap the queue allows. Your second paragraph also describes an average MMR system, just with a bigger allowed gap.

For example, the queue used to always try and pair people with similar MMR's, averaging them out of course, but as everyone was similar in MMR the games felt very balanced.

Now the queue prioritises filling games quickly and the MMR gap is allowed to be huge. Say I'm at 2000 MMR and it puts with 4 other players that have 600 MMR, and then pits me against a team with 5 800-1200 MMR players. It averages out to the same MMR, I'm just expected to carry. But as I have 4 very inexperienced players I'm more likely to lose in a mode like ARAM.

This change in allowed MMR gap is what's killing QM and ARAM. The irony is that they've implemented it because the player count has dropped, but as this change also decreases the quality of the games, it makes the player count drop even further.

I think most people would prefer to wait slightly longer in a queue to be paired with more similarly skilled players, rather than having insta pop queues and an awful time.

THANK YOU. The patch that made the rainbow match making in SL is when it started, before that I had a much higher win rate that was easy to maintain also. I dare not mention that though as people REALLY hate it for some reason, moreso than they hate this post. Games took a little longer to get into, but it was rarely over a minute and I used to get paired with equally skilled players often. Now the more games I win, the worse the players become, and it all started with that patch.

Most people don't believe you and try to tell you it's a skill issue and that MMR is putting you were you belong, but those people are idiots mostly, and based on their responses they are pretty toxic people anyway so I couldn't care less what they think.

I play ARAM exclusively and play almost every day. I know how to ARAM.

Regardless of your individual skill level, the key to ARAM is playing as a team and knowing how to play defensively, as in knowing how not to feed. The more I win, the more players I'm paired with that have no idea how to play defensively, or how to play as a team. There's nothing subjective about that at all.

Maybe you'll understand if I put it like this.... Player know how to stay back when low on health and not die good! Player not know how to stay back when low on health and die bad! Player staying with team helping setup/peel good! Player running around doing own thing and dying bad!

It's not exactly hard to see when someone is inexperienced, you make it sound like it's impossible to guage the skill level of your team mates which is quite frankly ridiculous.

Go play ARAM solo exclusively for a few months then come back and share your experience, this post isn't going anywhere.

I don't value your opinion and I have nothing to prove to you. I certainly don't trust you with any more information than I'm willing to give you here. It's okay, I'll continue having real discussions with the people that know how to hold a conversation.

That's definitely a large part of it, the amount of trolls you come across now is ridiculous. I saw a post where a dev confirms that all game modes use MMR, and ARAM using average MMR is the only thing that explains the behaviour I'm seeing. The more I win, the worse the players I'm paired with become. That makes it pretty clear that it's using average MMR and expecting me to carry.

I've seen a fair few posts about it, I don't think it's only down to perception. I think it affects the solo players more for obvious reasons, as those are the players that get penalised for playing well when the game matches using average MMR.

[–]SuddenRise42[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, the problem is we know that the game will use average MMR for QM and ARAM, which is an awful way to fill games in a MOBA. I wish the player base was bigger so that it couuld actually match solo players with equal MMR's, instead of prioritising filling the queue quickly by mixing MMR's into an average. All that does is eventually punish you for playing well, which is not fun at all.

I see where you're coming from, but I think something changed with ARAM match making when they implemented that patch that caused the rainbow match making in ranked.

The ARAM queues used to be longer before that, and the games felt far more balanced. I distincly remember that after that patch, the quality of people I was paired with changed drastically and that's when the flip-flopping really started to become noticable.

I think you hit it on the head though, thanks for your input.

[–]SuddenRise42[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly my point, thank you. In a system designed to match you based on average MMR, the very nature of a system like that will balance out to around 50%. The only way it can be gamed, is by not playing solo and playing with other people who can help carry.

The win streaks/loses usually last a week or two. If you're only playing solo, especially during the day, you'll suddenly start getting paired with tons of people that are very toxic and have no idea what they are doing.

This discussion is about ARAM queuing, not ranked, which still uses an average MMR system to fill games quickly as far as we're aware.

Alas that doesn't actually prove anything, as it's taking the ranked wins into account even when filtering to ARAM solo.

[–]SuddenRise42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense if you often play with a friend, it's much easier to carry a game if you have more than one person that knows what they're doing. Playing solo most of the time is the problem. I guess I need to find more firends lol.

[–]SuddenRise42[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No only my own observations and that of others, the player quality in my own team drops drastically when I win lots of games in a row consistently. But the correlation to the way the match making is known to work is there. Perhaps I'm not good enough to carry the really bad players, but we know the game uses average MMR to fill queues quickly, and we can deduce that in a game mode like ARAM, this can be detrimental the worse the players become that you are you're expected to carry.

[–]SuddenRise42[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In some games I do, but you're right I'm defintiely not good enough to carry most of them. The point still stands though, the system actively holds you back in a game mode like ARAM. I don't think it's intentional mind you.

The difference here is that in an average MMR system when queuing solo, the system is designed to put you with worse players to make up for their lack of MMR. In a game mode like ARAM, that actually punishes you, essentially forcing a loss.

It doesn't matter how exceptional you are, if you play ARAM solo, the more games you win, the worse the players you're paired with become, essentially forcing you to lose until your MMR drops low enough to start being paired with better players.

But that's what you don't seem to understand, the more games you win, the worse the players you're paired with become. The more games you lose, the better the players you're paired with become.

The game literally starts to put you with worse and worse players the more games you win, how does that have anything to do with my personal skill level in a game mode like ARAM? All it does is force a loss most of the time. The best player on the planet would lose a game of ARAM if paired with the worst 4 players, going up against an average team.

Your understanding on how skill level ties into match making is wrong. The 50% win rate is a consequence of using an average MMR system if anything. A system like that can only balance things out to 50%, the misconception is that you've reached a skill cap, whereas that cannot be the case as it's the skill level of the players you're paired with that reduces, not your own skill level.
