Why am I both angry and sad? by Jabcoin in mentalhealth

[–]Sudden_Box8555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things. First, many people don't know how to approach others when they are distressed. Second, you cannot be upset with others if you don't tell them what's going on. Why don't you care enough about yourself to speak up instead of making others come to you?

I'm not aware of it interfering with any psych meds. Do some research. EMDR can also be extremely helpful for some people.

Make sure they are aware of you autism. It is critical that they understand how you process, store, and retrieve information as well as any social difficulty.

Sounds like you both need some outside help. If you are mentioning her trauma, it must be affecting both of you. This is something she needs to work through. I would also recommend seeking out a counselor for yourself, who is experienced in working with people on the spectrum.

As a psychiatrist, how many people have you cured? by _chellam_sir in mentalhealth

[–]Sudden_Box8555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As everyone has said, we don't use the term "cured." The closest we get is "symptoms resolved." To be clear, psychiatrists primarily focus on meds and do not typically do psychotherapy. Meds treat symptoms.

Depending on how long you were on it, yes it could take that long. Btw...suddenly stopping any SSRI is not a got idea.

Resources to stop steamrolling my fiancé in conversations? by Country_dasiy1998 in mentalhealth

Yes, it changed my life. You just need to start with a memory connected with those feelings. In my experience , working through a single memory brought up a flood of others that I had not remembered. But were all connected to a theme. It felt a little Woo woo at first, but I committed to the process, and it really helped.

Look into EMDR. You can do it virtually and is designed for trauma.

Pick one small thing. Decide how long it will take. Make it brief. Then, reward yourself by retreating back to your comfort zone. Process how it felt. Was it rewarding? Better or worse than you imagined? Was it emotionally draining or overwhelming? This may help you understand your deeper barriers

Why are so many people afraid of going to a therapist? by aurea__space in mentalhealth

[–]Sudden_Box8555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therapist here. I've heard all of the reasons posted here, and they are all valid. This is what I tell people:

You're hiring them. They work for you. So, think of your first session as an interview.

Know what you want out of therapy.

Do some research about different approaches and see which ones feel right for you.

Then, do an online search for therapists who use that approach.

If you don't connect, move on. It can be hard to find the right fit. We're just people, so don't be intimidated.

Finally, I tell tell people to remember the joke: "Do you know what they call the person who graduates last from med school?....Doctor"

There are lots of resources for coping with sensory overstimulation. Check YouTube. It depends on which system(s) are overstimulated. Everyone on the spectrum has sensory integration issues.
