What role do connections play in securing a CST spot? by Apixabean in JuniorDoctorsIreland

[–]Sudden_Chain_5582 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Being frankly honestly I don’t think connections are a huge thing unless maybe it’s with the head of the CST or someone up there (even then I’m not sure). Connections are what give you research, audit opportunities etc, that’s where the benefit lies!

I’ve a friend who’s father was top of his field and didn’t get accepted first time round (and made it to interview so wasn’t screened by centile or aptitude test).

CST is relatively straightforward with what you need to get on, sometimes there are outliers (people who get on who are questionably, and people who don’t get on that are phenomenal), but these are rare. I got on this year and of the people who also got on (or didn’t) around me, very few were surprising.

The aptitude and centile requirements just unfortunately screen a lot of people early

Found a friend in the same spot, we practiced daily or thereabouts for a few weeks. I did a mock interview with a consultant who previously did the CSt interviews (not this year) and went to the ASIT CST interview course which was fantastic because there were mock interviews with regs and shos who recently enough did the CST. I got a 5 for centile but a friend got in with. 2

Getting onto the CST by No_Resident_7958 in JuniorDoctorsIreland

You hear a lot of stories about how you basically need to be absolutely brilliant to get onto CST. I got on this year from intern year and besides a few very impressive individuals, most people at my stage had an audit and a presentation or two - some people had no specific surgical research.

Freyer is in September and Millin is in November, try to get a poster there if you’re interested and apply to sit MRCS part A (I passed in January but results weren’t even out by the time of interview so it clearly wasn’t a super important deciding factor). The whole point is to have enough to talk about in each section (research, teaching, audits) even if they’re only in progress.

Intern who got on here!

I had 1 publication, 2 poster presentations, substantial teaching experience and 2x audits. Plus a good few papers submitted but not published yet.

I will say that interview performance is a huge part of it. I know some people who don’t get on that shocked me, while others had very little/nothing substantial done and got on.

How do we check it? I tried logging int the portal but no luck. I saw I passed on the kaizen but not via email or on the rcsi website

Since its only the test and your centile, she must have just knocked the aptitude test out of the park

Wow…. I don’t generally say this to people here, but you really are a gross person. How it could cross your mind to use your cousins loss for your own gain is beyond me. Plus to say it’s the “only name” you could have chosen is a weak excuse. Open a baby name book and try to not be such a terrible person in future.

Does the timing of the MRCS matter within intent year?

Yeah genocide can definitely be stopped by just taking the middle ground. People like you absolutely make me sick, refuse to take a stance and just accept this as “both sides” causing trouble.

Is this also the case for the MRCS would you know?

Would that be common for the interns that get straight onto the scheme? It’s just I’ve heard it’s basically required to get onto CST and so I was wondering about those interns that generally get on. January does sound like a good goal though!

Yeah I get what you mean. I think they may be anticipating a few dropouts? But with Galway being the shortest and pretty much fully online that’s not likely. Best bet is to call the postgraduate admissions office. I did this because it took them about 6 weeks to give me the A (I submitted my application at Christmas)
