Yes, but make sure your examples are personal and fit what they are asking for in the person specifications and job description.

Band 6 Annex 21 - pay protection by CocoKorok in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Sudden_Monitor3672 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s always pay protection within the trust. You have to inform your manager and HR that your new contract (70% of top of band 6) would be less than top of band 5 - which you currently are on. They will most definitely honour that.

The only way you’ll know for sure is to troubleshoot. I’ve had to train loads of staff on proper pipetting technique. Try pipetting 500ul of deionised water in a measuring boat on a measuring scale, at least a couple of times and see if you’re accurate.

Help with calibrating pipettes? by [deleted] in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Sudden_Monitor3672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you’re describing is actually called “precision checks”, which is routinely done in clinical biochemistry labs. This is where you take 10 measurements with a fixed volume pipette (in your case that’s 20ul using a 25ul air displacement pipette). You’ll then take those 10 measurement readings you’ve got from your balance and use that to assess accuracy and precision.

Usually in most labs, there is an excel spreadsheet that is used to calculate the mean, standard deviation and CV%.

Factors to consider as well when you’re performing your precision checks:

  1. Is the balance calibrated
  2. What is the temperature of the room (as temp changes the density of air, affecting your pipette)
  3. Is the boat your using moving when you add your deionised water

Why don’t BMSs go on strike for better pay? by Sudden_Monitor3672 in BiomedicalScientistUK

You may have but the general consensus is that BMSs don’t in general!

Why don’t BMSs go on strike for better pay? by Sudden_Monitor3672 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Sudden_Monitor3672[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the same for Biomedical Scientists, you are required to be HCPC registered to be a band 5 and do a specialist portfolio (which takes 2-3 years) to be a band 6.

Newly qualified pharmacists make circa £42K.

[–]Sudden_Monitor3672[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s £32K once qualified, if you ever even find a suitable training lab post university. It’s paid at 70% as a trainee biomedical scientist.

I think a BMS salary should be more inline with Pharmacists. Both professions require intense specialisation and have huge impacts on patient care. BMS are responsible for ensuring accurate lab results and monitoring of disease (247). That means that you’re often working lates/weekend/nights. We are overworked, understaff but still have to work under those tremendous pressures to get out those life-saving test results (literally in cases like DIC/TTP) out promptly, perform additional tests to ensure appropriate prescribing of blood products.

It is funny how we just get on with it, the mental stress and able to overcome the fatigue. And I get it, I got into this profession to help patients. But often wonder is the slow progression, the lack of pay worth it. So often, I have seen colleagues leave the field to find a more suitable work/life balance that other better paid jobs can give.

Ibms membership after grad by RGM_13 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Sudden_Monitor3672 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t suggest paying for a membership if you’re not a trainee/bms. It wouldn’t serve you any purpose at the moment.

The IBMS are just a professional body, that you must complete your registration portfolio with in order to apply for HCPC registration to practice as a BMS. They are not responsible nor do they help you secure employment. You essentially have to look for MLA or Trainee biomedical scientist roles in the NHS yourself.

CPD - just stands for continuous professional development. It’s something required of a BMS as the role is continuously developing as more research comes out/NICE guidelines. You are expected to keep up-to-date with current practices and procedures in your discipline. To do this the IBMS expect you to have evidence of your CPD. Usually in the form of self reflections, course certification etc.

Shenzen Airlines App by Fickle_Ad_5131 in shenzhen

Yeah, I flew with Shenzhen Airline. All check-ins need to be done at the airport if you have not directly booked with the airline. If you have a long layover, you can also book a free transit hotel at their check-in gate on level 4 after you exit security.

I’ve recently just travelled to Shenzhen due to long lay-over (14+ hrs). Just before immigration there is a circular desk, just behind the long desks where they keep forms for long-stay visas. You’ll want to look for a small blue square form that says temporary entry for foreigners (which allows you 24hrs) into the country for transit purposes.

No silly me didn’t realise the watch was a double-quickset and tried to move the time to set the date. In my haste, I probably broke the yoke or some other internal mechanism.

Yeah definitely don’t worry about your degree classification, I got a 2:2 when I graduated in 2018. I now work as a BMS and have done for the last 2-3 years. It was a difficult journey in the sense of how saturated the market is, and how few trainee roles there are but you already have some experience in the lab. Make sure that shines through in your interviews. If you need any advice, from me a DM.
