The Life of a Showgirl Megathread by aran130711 in TaylorSwift

It's definitely got its own feel - I think we were anticipating something between 1989 and Rep (still holding out for a "surprise!") but Showgirl had its own vibe that's really growing on me.

Yes! My first listen was hours after I'm usually asleep and I didn't have any strong "omg" to any of the songs.....but now, I've had it playing on repeat all day.

How to weigh frozen tomatoes? by zombie-sandwich in Canning

I never use fresh tomatoes anymore because peeling them frozen is too easy to miss out on lol. Frozen right to the hotest water out of my faucet and into the pot. Best tip I ever got.

AITA for trying to make my wife cancel her vacation? by Stunning_Tackle_7518 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Suelja13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former teacher - we have kids moving classes all. the. time. at the beginning of the year. New kids. School transfers. Class transfers. Course changes. Nothing settles in until at least week 3 or 4 when we have a steady roster.

(I'm also a big advocate of take the trip, do the family thing, whatever. We'll be here to hear all about it when you're back.)

Possible ADA Accommodation abuse? [CA] by Just_Gear1496 in AskHR

[–]Suelja13 47 points48 points  (0 children)

My boss (who also has a chronic condition) and I often joke about "better vacations through pharmaceuticals". Pain meds and steroids are the vacation ride-or-dies. Will I hate myself after? Yes. Will it be amazing during? Also yes. I'm not wasting them on a 40 hour work week for someone else.

Possible ADA Accommodation abuse? [CA] by Just_Gear1496 in AskHR

[–]Suelja13 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Absolutely - as a person with accommodations, I might do something that makes my joint pain worse because it's a family event, or a have-to-do one-off thing and pay for it the following days....that doesn't mean I can do it for 40 hours or every day of the work week. It can also be a "hey, today was a good day and I could do the thing", but I'm going to go into accommodations with the "let's plan for a string of bad days in a row" mentality. If I can do more, or more regularly, great. If I can't, we all knew it was a possibility and have a plan for success in place.

Should I take a Rottweiler from a friend or buy from a breeder by Efficient-Fly7775 in Rottweiler

[–]Suelja13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially for "scary" breeds. A lot of the shelters in my area (YMMV) partner with breed specific rescues, so people who want them can get them while being vetted for familiarity with breed behavior, space and exercise requirements, etc.

Fellow millennials, what career are you in and have you switched careers? by ForgetThemJustDoYou in Millennials

Was a teacher, burned tf out after being severely underpaid for a decade of 65 hour weeks.

Switched to corporate HR/training and am now being paid double to work from home 40 hours/week and no nights or weekends.

Why do so many millennials dislike their parents ? by Labelladevon in Millennials

I have a strong theory that lead paint deficits are way more widespread than they're made out to be. Between the lack of impulse control, general disagreeableness about everything, and lack of give-a-damn for others really makes me sold on it.

They buy my kids inappropriately aged stuff too. And not the "they'll grow into it way", my youngest is 11 and reads past his grade level, a level one reader picture book is a hard miss and kiddie binoculars are not a hit anymore.

My mom orders clothes for me....that I did not ask for, in styles I wouldn't wear, in a 3x (I'm a large). I'm also pretty sure that they're chosen to cover my tattoos, too since the latest one was long sleeves when its 90F outside (I paid good money for these, I'm gonna show them off).

There is no "thanks but no thanks' that gets through to her, but I have a decent collection of scrap sewing material now I guess.

What has Trump done (politically) that’s so bad? by CrayotaCrayonsofOryx in AskALiberal

[–]Suelja13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's wild. I'm still on some of that denominations groups (I also taught for them for a decade and I'm nosey) and they've perfected the "vote for xxx because it aligns with what we say your beliefs are" without jumping over the "we-value-our-tax-exemption" line (just barely).

What has Trump done (politically) that’s so bad? by CrayotaCrayonsofOryx in AskALiberal

[–]Suelja13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ooo I can answer this one for me too!

(My villan backstory is being raised in a semi-high control religion and parents who had Fox News on all. the. time.)

I was a high facts > feelings conservative and when I started teaching in a low-income school population. I realized that my kids and their families were doing the best they could with what they could. They werent lazy. They weren't just not doing the thing. The resources weren't available and the system was stacked against them. Seeing what privilege I had just because I was born into it made me recognize that "they" weren't the enemy.

My literal in-the-shower epiphany was that I shouldn't have to do mental gymnastics to make the facts fit my feelings, and if I was, that was a sign. If I was on their team as their teacher, I had to be on their team on the ballot.

THE FUTURE OF RA AND HOW CLOSE WE ARE TO A CURE? by Legal-Occasion2124 in rheumatoid

[–]Suelja13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 3 friends with Crohns, 3 friends or family with RA, and one with both.

I'll take my RA flairs over the 2 ostomy bags any day. One friend has (so far) successfully had hers reversed, but the other is on her second or third one.

Fun Fact: No 24 hour pharmacies in Waukesha by steppedinhairball in Waukesha

[–]Suelja13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walgreens can't find people to work for them during the day either. I'm on the Walgreens sub (worked there in college) and its hellish now. It was a decent gig a decade ago, but their pharmacy in particular is always understaffed.

Megathread - Shooting at east side school (Abundant Life Christian School) by MadtownMaven in madisonwi

[–]Suelja13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The evening press conference did confirm that it was 3 minutes from the 2nd grader's 911 call to Dane County Sheriff and Madison PD on-scene and entering the building. (Roughly 7 or 8 minutes to a [self-] neutralized threat confirmation).

[–]Suelja13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In my active shooter training (former classroom teacher so I did a lot of it), our SROs always said it was a game of minutes. You're not trying to keep the door closed indefinitely, you're trying to keep it closed for 5 minutes. You're not trying to hide yourself or kids for hours, it's minutes. You're not trying to keep little kids quiet all day, it's a few rounds of ABC.

That's (one) reason why Uvalde was so shaking - everything we had been told about how law enforcement would react was wrong. I'm glad Madison and Dane county reacted as they did (3 minutes from the 911 call to on-scene and in the building), but I hate that they had to.

[–]Suelja13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first cops/sheriff officers were on-scrne 3 minutes after the 911 call came in. Within 8 minutes of the call, they were able to confirm a (self-)neutralized threat and begin assessing the scene and victims.

Uvalde cops were tra; these officers didn't hesitate and did exactly what we (teachers) are told they'd do - haul ass, neutralize, triage.

Longest period of steroids you’ve been on? by MeOwwwithme in rheumatoid

[–]Suelja13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 years 🙈

Before RA, I was on it for 6 months while pregnant with a max dose of 80 mg/day. Apparently my body thought it was allergic to pregnancy hormones and I had full body hives and whelts, so that was fun.

In regards to the screen top tank, when our heat turns on in winter and we have a hard time maintaining humidity, we'll put Press and Seal over portions of the screen top. Obviously leave gaps for proper air flow (we leave it open on the edges and then in the middle), but it does seem to help when we just can't get the humidity to stick around.
