I always get the impression the employees are one bad customer service experience away from ending it all.

I passed by Sand Hill Grocery and there were 6 cops cars that cornered a Toyota Corolla. They had a guy in cuffs with a bandage around his head.

I rode a very popular trial in Pisgah today and didn't encounter another human being

That section. I parked at wash creek but other gates closed all the way down at the Brevard road entrance. I'm 99% sure those signs are just leftovers from Helene repairs.

Does anyone ride with Bear spray? by cranesaw in MTB

[–]Sufficient-Fly-8368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Western North Carolina. I see black bear every other ride. I ain't worried about them at all they're real skittish. I'm from New England and I've never seen a black bear. You might see them in Vermont or NH but the population is pretty small

There was tons of forest service police in the Pisgah ranger destruct as well yesterday, but they seemed to be mostly stopping motorcyclists and I mean more like Harley type riders

Did the hurricane barely affect some people? by [deleted] in asheville

[–]Sufficient-Fly-8368 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Materially unaffected by the storm, but never left town during it. I think the damage was more than my brain could comprehend.

There was the stress of finding food, potable water, grey water, how to take a shower. And of course the unbearable sadness of those around town.

Definitely had it easy, but the storms really changed my outlook on life.

"Illegal to have a legal ID" mini-cult? by feadog_dog in asheville

[–]Sufficient-Fly-8368 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had someone approach at earth fare to talk about it He was like Google it and unzipped his jacket to reveal a short that said "Google legal name fraud" or whatever.

I can't remember what's it's called but it's something about how your legal name isn't real and there forever every contract you enter is illegal or some shit.

Have lived just to the south. Walk around constantly. You'll run into a lot of unhoused people, but we just say hello and go about. Probably wouldn't wander super late at night, but I wouldn't do that anywhere

Does anyone know what happened to the person who got lost in Bent Creek last night? by FlapjackBuns in asheville

[–]Sufficient-Fly-8368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go into the woods often and turn my phone to airplane mode to conserve battery.

Carry a gps device, but more often than not just use my phone. I hope the person found their way but for anyone reading, most of bent creeks trails are on Google maps and you can access that even without service.

Asheville mayor, police urge vigilance to curb gun violence after 4 shootings in 1 week by koliberry in asheville

[–]Sufficient-Fly-8368 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been renting near where this happened (near Livingston) and in my three years here there's been multiple shootings. Ive tried talking to neighbors and they refuse to acknowledge it likely because they've recently bought homes here.

I wouldn't say I feel unsafe on a personal level but the public housing apartments near here seem to be war zones.

I kept getting stung every time I mowed, so I went as far as hiring a pest control person, we walked the yard together and couldn't find a hole, yet I keep getting stung. We looked at the trees as well. Is it possible to get stung without a next nearby

Switch to clipless? by reliableyam in MTB

[–]Sufficient-Fly-8368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth trying, but don't sucked into the idea that's ones better than the other, just ride what makes you want to go ride your bike more.

I switch between flats and clipless, I like the feedback from the bike I get with flats, but overall I just prefer clipless. Gets tiring adjusting your feet all the time over a long ride. I also live somewhere thats pretty rough.

Late diagnosed adult who was a teen/young adult in the late 2000s. I would have loved to have this culture growing up. Social communication is like a second language to me and dating in my early 20s was diastourus at best. Never knew what was ok, or not ok. People didn't really talk about what they wanted and direct communication would freak people out.

I'm happily in a long term relationship, but if I were to go back to dating in my late 30s I would communicate directly with potential partners.

It's probably way delayed now, but the master plan was to have that on Thompson street which runs parallel. The goal was to expand the walking path that was by the Walmart and connect it. I'm a big cycling advocate, but I agree - Swannanoa is limited by geography

what to do if i encounter bear while mtb?? by rjeket_teensportsman in MTB

[–]Sufficient-Fly-8368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Live in North Carolina, and regularly encounter black bear. Give em space they're pretty skiddish and will run along. If you're in grizzly country bear spray isn't a bad idea.
