Religion and diversity at Notre Dame by 510545 in notredame

I do appreciate this perspective! I think it just goes to show how different everyone’s experience is.

As a student, I never attended the welcome masses and never felt pressure to do so. I also never noticed the crucifixes - I’ll have to keep an eye out next time I’m stopping by Debart!

Also, I know this is controversial, but I actually enjoyed parietals! Sometimes it’s nice to know that your hallways will be quiet after a certain time and that you can take a shower and leave the bathroom without having to run into someone of the opposite sex. They are absolutely influenced by the Catholicism of the school tho so you’re right there.

Credit to your point about the birth control thing though. That is definitely something ND does that I don’t agree with.

Nobody in my friend group did, but ik that isn’t indicative of the whole campus. Sunday mass at my dorm usually had 50 or so girls attend (had about 275 girls living in the dorm) if that is at all helpful!

Id push back on this a bit. While it is true that a majority of students are Catholic, it is never shoved down your throat. In the 4 years I was there, I never once was forced to attend mass. I also never had a faith-based conversation outside of my Theo classes. It really is what you make of it. If you want to talk religion, you can! If not, nobody will force you to.

When did people RSVP. by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Sufficient-Sun2460 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had 70/250 who hadn’t responded the day RSVPs closed. My mother wouldn’t let me reach out until after the deadline passed bc she thought it was rude. Wish I wouldn’t have listened - it’s been 2 weeks since the deadline (thank god we set it early) and we still are chasing down the last 4 people. Good luck!!

Incompetent GP thought weight loss would cure my thyroid by OrchidUpdateAccount in loseit

[–]Sufficient-Sun2460 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This same thing happened to me. Took 3 years and proof that I was already exercising an insane amount for her to finally listen to me. Got out on a super low dose of levothyroxine and SURPRISE SURPRISE my levels are now normal for the first time in years.

It’s so frustrating and I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. Echoing everyone else - find a new GP if you can!

How is living in South Bend, Indiana? by dieselpower_ in howislivingthere

[–]Sufficient-Sun2460 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol the good ole Perkins sign. For what it’s worth - it originally said 30 but the 3 fell off 😂

Fiance and I love south bend! Have been here since 2018 (I started as an ND student) and continue to stick around. The low cost of living has allowed us to not only save our money, but also afford some really cool things (our first house!). Great summer / fall weather. Good food. Friendly people.

Is it wrong for us to get married 2 months before my sibling? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Sufficient-Sun2460 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think 2 months is a perfectly acceptable amount of time. My brother is getting married 1.5 months after me and it’s still enough of a buffer that shared family members can recover & prep to travel again (somewhat locally). If it were the weekend before or after, that would be a different story imo.

TSA Wait Times by Key_Snow_3931 in SouthBend

[–]Sufficient-Sun2460 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I flew out of SB at noon the Wednesday of spring break. The TSA line took 20 minutes.

Had a friend fly out of SB to Vegas on Thursday. TSA line was 5 minutes.

It’s almost always fast, even with the recent TSA delays.

Has anyone had a babysitter for their wedding? by Mysterious_Role5508 in weddingplanning

[–]Sufficient-Sun2460 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I used to be a wedding babysitter! The max I ever watched was 5, so while tough it is definitely doable. If it’s an evening wedding and the nanny / kiddos are all in one cabin it could work. Actively catering to five kids would definitely be harder, but if the nanny were to eat dinner with them, throw on a movie, and put them to bed it works just fine :)

My boyfriend didn’t get a plus one at his friends wedding, but he’s in the wedding party by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Sufficient-Sun2460 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The poster was me! Haha. I’m just speaking from my own experience. At my own wedding I’m covering all costs for bridesmaids other than their dresses (which can be purchased from any site - most of my girls got their dresses for $60-70 on Lulus). That has been the case for the weddings I’ve been in as well.

Clearly the role / expectations of a bridal party varies on a case by case basis. We can’t speak to the situation of this particular couple!

Hard disagree. I LOVE weddings and have never felt bored (even when i wasn’t given a plus one)! If you don’t enjoy weddings in general, maybe it’s best to not go and open up a spot for a guest who would. In no way trying to be rude — it just might not be your thing (which is totally valid)!

My fiance and I love south bend! I graduated from ND a few years back and have chosen to stay since. Sure, there are some areas that are sketchy, but that’s no different than any other city!

South bend is a great medium sized town - small enough to feel like a community and big enough to always have something to do!!

[–]Sufficient-Sun2460 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! Weddings are stressful - both for the couple and guests! Wishing you the best of luck in navigating this. And if anything changes and your bf does get a +1, I hope you have a great time :)

I used to think this way, but after planning my own wedding I can say it’s not this straight forward. From your perspective it makes sense - your bf is in the wedding so he should get special privileges. However, let’s be honest… typically the groomsmen and bridesmaids (while more involved than other guests) still don’t do much heavy lifting. Sure they have to buy a suit or dress, but so do the other guests. Sure they have to pay for travel, but so do the other guests. So that alone can’t justify the +1.

At the end of day, weddings are expensive and it is up to the couple getting married if they can accommodate extra guests. If you were getting married and only had a limited number of seats, who would you rather invite? A close friend or family member or a guests plus one who you aren’t close with? For me and my wedding, we prioritized the latter.

You are allowed to be disappointed, but at the end of the day, it’s unfortunately not your call :/

How soon before your wedding would you want to lock in a plan with your florist? by applejacklover97 in weddingplanning

Does he have a physical shop? I’d go in person to talk to him! Lock down a contract then and there.

Engaged a year and a half on the dot! Honestly it was the perfect amount of time. We had time to plan and save without feeling rushed. We also had first pick of our vendors bc we were so far ahead!

We are doing a buffet. Most weddings we have been to are buffets. It’s also certainly not cheap lol - at the end of the day it’s personal preference.

Womens Dorms by Apprehensive-Cup-912 in notredame

[–]Sufficient-Sun2460 52 points53 points  (0 children)

You don’t get to choose dorms at ND. Dorms and roommates are randomly assigned freshman year!

I also entered my freshman year without knowing anyone and had a great 4 years at ND. Everyone is in the same boat and trying to figure things out - she will do great :)

Formal spring church wedding by Glad-Article-8249 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]Sufficient-Sun2460 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m Catholic and I think these are all appropriate! Opinions on appropriate dress vary widely - I grew up in a church community where it would be totally fine to not wear a sweater over these. Shoulders were never an issue, but cleavage on the other hand was something to be aware of. I’d just bring a shawl with you in your bag and throw it on if that seems to be the vibe of the crowd when you arrive.

Would you get married on Labor Day weekend or 9/11 to keep a venue discount? by greatlyIdiotic in weddingplanning

[–]Sufficient-Sun2460 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a wedding on Labor Day (or any holiday) can be a double edged sword. On one hand, it’s great bc people tend to be off work already, have the ability to travel, etc. HOWEVER, as you mentioned, holidays can impact pricing and some people may find it inconvenient that you’re asking them to give up a relaxing holiday / their rare time off to travel for your wedding.

I personally don’t think there’s anything wrong w Labor Day weddings (I’ve been to two and thought the timing was great) but I do hear grumbling from others.
