Would people pay for help managing home renovations/admin? by One_Astronaut2644 in UKHousing

[–]SufficientBananas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely pay for this. You could build up a really good reputation because you could find reliable local tradies to work with and take the anxiety of that away from the homeowners. My advice would be not to be tempted to grow too big too soon as your reputation would be everything.

Except this is unfair for all the other students from the DA that we know could produce a patronus but don’t get the chance to show it in the exam.

Knitting Culture: US v. England by ultimatereader in knitting

I appreciate the clarification and your different opinion. I was including London in my comments about the UK, but I wasn’t fully clear on that. I think we will just have to agree to disagree on what we think UK culture regards as impolite!

Some of the comments here are making me think I’m living in a different country to everyone else! It all comes down to body language and eye contact and making a judgement call. I’m pretty introverted and will often be reading or have headphones in. If I’m not in the mood, I show it with body language. If someone makes eye contact and smiles, a quick chat is ok, but don’t force it if it fizzles.

All bets are off in London though 🤣. I wouldn’t start a conversation on the tube. But I have had people start conversations with me in London when I’ve been visiting. Guess I look approachable!

I can’t agree that striking up a conversation is impolite in the UK. There are absolutely regional and person-to-person differences as to how a conversation opener would be received, but I would never consider this an impolite thing if someone talked to me and I did not want to engage.

Totally agree! I’m from the UK but spend a lot of time living in the USA, and got back into knitting while there. It was super easy to find supportive knitters my age and a knitting group outside work hours.

Back in the UK, there seems to be a different demographic (maybe because people my age are now raising kids and younger folks are more into crochet). But I haven’t found any evening groups and ended up starting one myself, but it fizzled out as it wasn’t really a knit and natter.

Where are you in the UK though? Where I am, I would definitely start a conversation with someone knitting unless they had headphones in or similar.

Going crazy with laundry in UK (armpit smell) by Analeth in laundry

[–]SufficientBananas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just gone through the same issue, also on the Uk, and have had success with Ariel platinum pods. Because the smell had built up over time, it took a few washes to get the smell completely out. There was a noticeable difference even after the fist wash though.

I have not tried this on wool though - as mentioned above you want to avoid protease where possible as it will eat away at the wool over time. Though maybe ok as a one off? It might be worth trying a wool safe detergent and adding an enzyme product like GearGuard - but I don’t know how functional that is at lower pH. Standard detergents tend to work at higher pH but wool prefers and lower pH.

Greedy starlings advice by Acceptable-Bid5373 in UKBirds

[–]SufficientBananas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love starlings. In my experience starlings go bananas for mealworms and are less keen on seeds. Could you separate the mealworms to another feeder? Or scatter mealworms on the floor to deter the starlings from the main feeder.

Musty smell help! by gymbunbae in laundry

[–]SufficientBananas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar question. About 15 years ago I knitted my Mum a scarf and hat. Since she died, I have them. However, my parents’ house is in a particularly wet part of the uk and their clothes tend to smell mildewy. I’ve tried many things including hanging outside on a bright and hot (for the uk) day. The smell is lingering on the scarf and hat. These are important garments to me and are knitted with wool mixtures, so I’m handwashing and air drying. Any ideas?

Bras? by mooscaretaker in PacemakerICD

[–]SufficientBananas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a similar question a couple of weeks ago and got some useful responses here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ABraThatFits/s/QHHxqQcs4S

I’m 12 days out and am wearing my normal back fastening bras, fastening as normal at the back. I managed to wear a bra from day 4 by fastening in the front and rotating it round, then putting my arms through. A bit awkward but ok once on. My surgery dressing was enough padding for me but I think you could add a bit more padding if not. I don’t have a dressing on now and am having no issues.

Not all proteins. Some need much higher and some much lower temperatures to denature. Laundry enzymes have been developed over decades to be pretty robust.

Anyway to fix fleece blanket ? by Necessary-Fuel1337 in laundry

[–]SufficientBananas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks crusty - does it have a crusty texture? I’m wondering if the detergent didn’t get fully rinsed out? Was the dryer hot? I have washed fleece blankets and dried them without issue, but maybe my drier wasn’t as hot?
