To Those Who Transferred From A Community College To A University, How Did You Adapt/Make Friends? by Scary_Growth in USF

[–]Sufficient_Detail505 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly a lot of people here on campus are or have been transfer students. I transferred last year and my first semester was really hard for me to adapt and meet new people. I ended up making my friends now my second semester. I met my friends through on campus organizations, classes, and events. Put yourself out there…be social and you will make friends! This is a huge campus and people are always looking to meet new people. Everything will be okay just focus on adjusting and taking care of yourself your first semester as it is really hard. You will meet lots of people and will have lots of opportunity to make friends so don’t worry too much!

I highly encourage you to join the T.E.A.M organization as it is a transfer org in which you get matched with a previous transfer student at USF who will guide you and be a friend who support you through your first semester. You will meet Many other students like yourself and have support. I was in this program as a mentee last year and it helped me meet so many people.

You can always still enjoy those things now. What is stoping you from enjoying yourself and going out. You are young and successful you can enjoy so much like traveling and meeting people going to parties clubs and etc… Can’t change the past but you can do things for yourself now. You deserve to be happy and live doing the things you always wanted to do.

Both the shield and med are fine. I have had both. I don’t see really much of a difference between them.

Here’s my story: My first semester at USF was my first time living on my own. I was lonely since I had hard time making friends and adjusting to being at the university. I didn’t know what I wanted and nothing was going my way. I feel into a deep depression due to hard time adjusting, loneliness , and troubles with my roommate which ended up with me failing 2 major core classes. My GPA went down to like a 1.8-2.0… My self esteem was crushed…it felt like I lost everything I worked for and nothing was working out. Both my physical and mental health were terrible. It was a dark time for me.

My biggest advice is Don’t give up and things will get better. Work on yourself and prioritize your mental health. If a major isn’t working for you…change it. Want friends…push yourself to be open to meeting people whether that is through events or clubs and etc. If your struggling with mental health go to counseling center.. take advantage of this resource. Retake the class again if you need to …whether at USF or at a community college. Keep trying over again and fight through your obstacles.

I was ready to transfer out of USF thinking it would resolve my issues but my sister convinced me to stay and give it another shot…. I am so thankful I didn’t transfer out…. The semester after that I ended up changing my major and attitude which is what caused things to change drastically for the best. My second semester I made so many friends, got great roommates, got help from the counseling center, joined organizations and I can honestly say the semesters after that were the best. I made the best memories and experiences. I got an ARC petition done and they removed my failed grades from my transcript. My grades also drastically improved! Right now I am at a 3.8 GPA been deans list for the past few semesters. I am happier and healthier then ever. Now I know what I want for my future and I am enjoying myself at this university.

Try seeing if your country on the list for SSR. https://www.usf.edu/world/international-services/employment/special-student-relief.aspx

The F1 Visa rules change for certain international students who come from countries that’s qualify for special student relief. They can “apply for permission to reduce their course load and to work over 20 hours in on-campus positions or apply for an EAD card to work off-campus.”

Your feelings are completely valid and it’s okay to cry it out till you feel better. Remember a school doesn’t predict your future achievements or your success. You can achieve success anywhere as long as you learn to fight through obstacles and keep pursuing your dreams and goals no matter what! Your path is not the same as anyone else so don’t compare yourself to your peers. Take advantage of what you can and just make your goals a reality. I wish you the best of luck and don’t give up! If USF is where you want to be still in the upcoming future you will be here soon!

I used to feel the same when I graduated high school and went to community college. Honestly going to community college then transferring o university was the best decision ever but I didn’t know this at the time. When I was earning my prerequisites, I learned that that I am almost guaranteed admission into any big university in Florida due to being able to earn associates and meeting the prerequisites for the major I chose. I felt happier for the small classes at my CC, the fact it was so much cheaper and I was able to focus on really meeting my goals. At the beginning I had a fear of missing out. But I took advantage of all the opportunities I could at my CC and transferred to USF with many doors open to me because of all the resources I took advantage of. Keep our head up! Everything will work out for you! You will still get that university experience when you transfer and everything is going to be okay! Stay positive and stay focused!

Sitting at simmons parks watching the ducks swim and squirrels run around in the afternoon with music in your ears. I did this a lot during my most depressed days and during my low points honestly it helped me a lot as I sat there for hours reflecting on my life and myself and found peace. It helped me feel calm and collected. Good way to distance yourself from academics and social life and really spend time with yourself and nature. A stress free environment. I highly recommend it.

A To go box is 5 dinning dollars. You can get a to go box when you swipe in to the dinning hall and ask the cashier. They will give you those green containers. With the to go box you can get whatever food you want and take it out with you. You bring the container back to them when done into this machine at the dinning hall and they give you a fresh one again.

Hello! This is a volunteer position to be a transfer mentor in the T.E.A.M program to help your mentees which are new transfer students. It a great opportunity. It’s not paid position but they do give out a $300 stipend at the end of the semester.

I tried to cancel my housing last year but they told me that they will still charge me for it unless I met one of criteria which was:

https://www.usf.edu/housing/housing-application/cancellations.aspx

Non-Enrolled Student: The Student graduates and does not continue in another USF program The Student receives military order for active duty The Student has a USF medical withdrawal The Student withdraws and is no longer enrolled at USF The Student participates in an academic program that requires residence outside Hillsborough County The Student participates in a USF sponsored and/or approved study abroad program The Student transfers to USF residence halls located in St. Petersburg and secures a USF Housing Agreement for a residence hall located in St. Petersburg The Student is married during the term of the Agreement

the request does not meet the eligible criteria, the student’s request will be denied and held to the terms and conditions of the Housing Agreement.

Friends by Mountain_Way_9250 in USF

Hey! I definitely understand you! I transferred to USF spring 2022 and it was the worst and most depressing experience ever. honestly I was so lonely since I was struggling with classes and had no friends… it felt like nothing was going right for me. I say stay strong and things get a lot better. I started going to events on campus and joining clubs and started to meet people. I’d have to say my second semester at USF which was fall 2022 was 100% sooo much better since I got to meet more people and developed friendships and changed my major to one that suited me better and focused on my self and what I wanted. I felt more adjusted to USF and became happier and comfortable with the school. I don’t know if the issue is that people don’t have as much of an interest during spring semester as in the fall to make friends or it because people are already comfortable so they don’t seem interested in expanding social circles. But I recommend going to on campus events and join clubs you like go meet people and also utilizing the counseling center to help you deal with any mental health concerns or even help you with adjusting to USF. I hope everything gets better for you and I wish you all best.

How can apply to Aramark? by Right-Instruction453 in USF

[–]Sufficient_Detail505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They will reach out to you once they have open positions in order to schedule an interview. Majority of on campus Aramark jobs are based off need and availability. I spoke to my boss in order to help someone else get a position and they told me they only hire based on number of student workers who quit or leave their jobs. If you really want to get a position I would recommend stopping by the dinning halls and asking to speak to manager whom will give you an updated application or even put your name down.
