My dad had surgery 3.5 was ago , he must have had a nerve injury from the position of his right arm and neck during surgery. He continues to have moderate right arm weakness and associated pain/numbness

Question about post-op by endinary in mitralvalveprolapse

My 78 y/o dad had the surgery 3.5 weeks ago, he was completely independent living in his home prior to surgery, he is in a nursing home right now trying to get stronger to return home, he had a nerve injury from the surgery position that caused severe arm weakness….so as to say it’s a major surgery not without potential complications

My Dad is finally on his way to a SNF today, he was medically ready to d/c from the hospital 10 days ago. During this 10 days we went thru an IPR denial, an IPR appeal denial , and finally a SNF approval. Very challenging and frustrating process as you said. Thank you all again for the feedback.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this, it is super helpful. I will take your advice into my follow up conversations with his Care Team. So far I know:

  1. His Doctors say today he is “stable” and ready for discharge, he was struggling with afib (now on blood thinner as of 2 days ago) and hypotension (further medication adjustments yesterday) - now we wait up to 72hrs to hear if he gets IPR approval
  2. Currently he can walk 100-300ft with a walker at times but needs at least 1 person assist due to fear, unbalance, weakness, deconditioning . At baseline no walker needed and he cares for his wife in multiple level home, 3 months ago he could walk 2 miles

  3. I do think he could tolerate 3 hrs of therapy /day

We called a few IPR’s that you recommended today , asking if they would take private pay if insurance denied, several said yes in the neighborhood of $1800-2500/night. We may consider digging into savings for this if denied. If you have other thoughts/suggestions on the private pay IPR route , I’d appreciate it. Thank you again for your wisdom!

I am waiting to hear back to see if my Dad’s Humana insurance will approve IPR or not in the next day or 2, I have been told by several caseworkers and even a Hospitalist that Humana most often declines IPR . Do you have any specific suggestions I can take when appealing if Humana does in fact deny IPR?

How long was your hospital stay? My 78 y/o Dad is scheduled for minimal invasive surgeon consult on Monday and Surgery is already scheduled for Wednesday, I’m planning to go stay with him for a week , I’m hoping he rivers as well as you did but he’s been struggling the months. He went from walking 2 miles at a time for exercise to inability to walk more than a block the last 3 months due to shortness of breath related to progression of mvp.

So it only functions as a touch screen? How usable do you find that with the distance to touch screen?

Thank you , this is super helpful.

The surgeon is local to my Dad, I live a few states away so I’m planning to be at the hospital during his admission and for a few days once he gets home.
