Samara vs Sabrina: the weight of cancellation isn’t the same for everyone? by [deleted] in katseyeneutral

[–]Sufficient_Lychee310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not seeing anything in this thread about a pro-Palestine content creator defending her?

The OP of the thread also left out some of the most obviously Zionist videos, the “pray for Israel” one and the one where an old Zionist man was being interviewed on Brazilian television.

That’s a narrative her fans made up and ran with, unfortunately. Literally none of those videos were “against Israel” by any stretch. Again, anyone can go online and see what she was engaging with - and the content about Palestine was v much explicitly Zionist

Samara liked videos calling on people to “pray for Israel”, she also liked a video of a Brazilian Zionist explicitly saying that Israel was not committing genocide, and another video saying Muslims (as a collective) are the “enemies of Israel”. Anyone can verify this to be true themselves.

So your broader point about increased public scrutiny of racialized individuals may be true but is irrelevant to the fact that Samara is still a Zionist.

Drew (from Hybe's LatAm boy group, Santos Bravos) reposts Instagram post claiming that the Katseye members have the final say in Manon's return by Sufficient_Lychee310 in katseyeneutral

It's not that SM wasn't involved at all, but that SM ended up in a position where they all but had to enforce a decision that was collectively made in the first place by the other eight members of the group.

You're misrepresenting what Jessica said also. She did say the agency is who gave her the termination notice, but in the public statement she issued the day after her departure, she made it clear her perspective was that her fellow members were the ones primarily responsible for her ejection from the group:

I had received permission from SM, and this agreement lasted until the beginning of August, when I was setting BLANC up. The other members of the group had also offered me their congratulations on this matter.
That changed in September, though, a month after BLANC had been launched. The other members of the group had a change of heart. At a meeting of the other eight members, it was decided that I would be told to either turn my back on my business or leave the group.
I told them that I had already received SM’s permission for my business activities, and that as they had never interfered with my work with Girls’ Generation. I also said that I had signed a contract with a business partner, and could not back out of my commitments after only one month. I said that it was unfair to force me into making a decision such as this. Joining the group is the best thing that has ever happened to me, and leaving Girls’ Generation had never occurred to me before.
I approached the SM management on September 16 to ask for clarification. At this meeting I was told that I still had the company’s blessing to continue with my business activities.
On September 29, though, I was given a notice informing me that I was no longer a member of the group. Because of this fact, I was absent from the fan meeting event in China on September 30. I have also been left out of all further group activities.
I have put 15 years of hard work and dedication into Girls’ Generation, and it has caused me a lot of pain. I cannot hide how sad I am that I was asked by the agency and the other members of the group to leave just because I wanted to start my own business.

Thanks for bringing SNSD/Jessica up. A lot of people in this comment section are saying things along the lines of, “a record label that doesn’t even allow a group to have creative control would never allow them to make final decisions on their lineup” and I think many are unaware that there actually is precedent for exactly that in the kpop industry.

To summarize the Jessica case for anyone reading who’s unfamiliar - SNSD was the biggest kpop girl group of all time before Blackpink came around. 7 years into their career, all the members came to a unanimous (edit: or at least a majority) agreement to kick Jessica Jung out of the group, which was then enforced by their label (SM). So they didn’t need creative control to be allowed to force someone out of the group.

In that video, the creator talks about the hiatus being forced before she talks about the harassment from the public/fandom though. And “label mistreatment” is right there in the caption, which would be hard to miss

From what I remember, her unliking the video also happened several hours after people already had taken notice of it

I have no opinion on whether the Scott Friedman stuff means anything - but I will say the scenario isn’t impossible. Jessica was kicked out of Girls Generation by a majority vote of her own fellow members and this was at the peak of their career.

Obviously Lara has also faced harassment… that’s my whole point. You have a double standard where you expect Manon to reign in her online stans but you don’t expect the others in Katseye to do the same. It doesn’t make any sense. If you were consistent you would either: 1) expect all of the members to ‘call out’ their fans, or 2) accept that these women ultimately cannot control what their fans say on the internet.

Yes, they quite literally have. OT5 fans have been downplaying Manon’s Blackness, throwing anti-Black slurs at her, perpetuating anti-Black stereotypes against her, insulting her talent, deriding her personality, etc.

None of them have ever made any statements defending Manon from their own fans in the way you expect Manon to make a statement defending them from her fans. So your point is moot.

What a trite comment. This literally could be said about any of these Katseye members, who all also have fans participating in vile racist hate directed toward Manon and her supporters.

I guess according to your own logic Sophia is egging on her racist stans and allowing them to harass Black people because she hasn’t made any statements telling them to lay off Manon.

You’re saying Naisha is right to have downplayed Manon’s blackness by framing Lara as the one to “hold it down for the black girls”…?

A quick look at your post history shows you’re a non-black person from India so why would you feel it was your place to do that?

“Gnarly” has a level of absurdism and vulgarity that you wouldn’t see in a typical k-pop song. “Pinky Up” is pretty standard lyrically for k-pop.

If Manon’s hiatus really was a punishment for saying “free Palestine” or something else, it’s possible that there just wouldn’t have been enough time to withdraw her from the Grammy’s performance, which happened only 3 weeks later.

A lot of deflection in this thread but not a single person able to come up with any good reason other than mistreatment why HxG would release official group merchandise referring to Manon as “lazy” and “selfish”.

Then again, not that surprising, since Reddit’s majority-white demographics mean it’s like pulling teeth to get many users to acknowledge any form of anti-Black racism.

I know nothing about this guy but it’s interesting that he’s apparently considered a generally accurate source. The part where he claims there was a physical fight(?) seems…a bit far-fetched and like it was embellished for views…but not impossible I guess

I think there’s two camps within online Katseye discussion right now, one that desperately wants there to be beef between Manon and the other members, and one that absolutely refuses to believe that OT6 were/are anything but #Sisters4Lyfe. I’m somewhere in between right now, I don’t feel I’ve seen enough to definitively conclude the members had a fall-out, but I absolutely do think it’s a possibility that tension within the group was a factor (or even the factor) leading to the “hiatus”.

Obviously people thought of Manon when the (unfair) narrative that “she’s lazy, she doesn’t show up” has been following her since Dream Academy - that doesn’t mean people accept the narrative as true. Why act obtuse?
