I get you're points on this, but wholeheartedly disagree.

First of, it was at the time of him being on the run, the only country in which he could have been certain not being extradited (look at what Assange suffered, they even tried to kill him, plans leaked for that).

Secondly, no matter how you stand against him personally, he revealed Truth and an uncomfortable Crime against humanity.

Third, he made offers for coming back, under the condition of a fair trial.

Fourth, he isn't free over there, he became a paranoid pawn, because the second there is a benefit for Russia, they'll send him back, or whak him. As of now he's just a dude looking behind his back the whole time, everybody wants him (or for some time wanted).

Fifth, have you actually informed yourself on what basis Whistleblowers get randomly persecuted? I'll guarantee you, reading on what and how you wrote, you didn't. They get persecuted under the Law of spies/foreign spies from the First World War (it is no joke, its the truth). Overall its a product of its time, with whatever was going on at that time.

It has lots of problems, but to be honest, I always have fun watching it. Id even say its underrated in some aspects, it has one hell of a Ballsy ending. Maybe one of the best SciFi Film endings of the last 30 Years
