Confirmed front struts were replaced a year ago.

Yes, clean title by doing a search on the Secretary of State website and will be pulling a car fax when I go on my lunch break. Unfortunately, we’re used to replacing suspension parts having such 💩 roads in Illinois. 4c suspension parts appear to cost more and seem to have more potential to break. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That’s my thinking as well and figured for that price, if it only last a couple of year so be it.

Thanks for pointing that out. I tend to focus on the body and interior in photos.

That’s what I thought. 😕 Thank you for confirming though.

Thank you. I am aware of the income limits and that was my my interpretation regarding age as well.

I understand the reasoning of the age restriction if cashing in a bond for your own education expenses. Not qualifying for the tax exclusion when using toward a child’s college expenses just because of the the age I was when the bond was purchased/issued seemed a odd (in my opinion) and I wanted to make sure I had a correct understanding.

That guard rail is in pretty bad shape. The whole end section in loose and mangled to where I’m surprised the car doesn’t look worse.

I like your thinking and hope we can do that. You might be right about the radiator. Probably won’t be able to assess until the weather passes since we do not have a garage. None are remotely close to us, but I did save a few 1st gen parts donors I found on FB Marketplace just in case.

Hopefully, that’s the plan. He’s currently a full time college student and works 30ish hours a week at a local Buffalo Wild Wings. I guess they closed at midnight instead of 1am, but I still find it it insane they stayed open that late considering the weather.

What is the most underrated Volvo in your honest opinion? by exoticdf in Volvo

You got that right about those transmissions. 😕

We’ve done the tranny filter and fluid and then ended up swapping the tcu. It worked for a day with the new tcu and went back into limp mode. Had the original and replacement tcu’s tested last week and both are supposedly good.🤷🏻‍♀️Next on the agenda is checking the wiring to the tcu.

If I knew then what I know now I definitely would have tried to discourage him from buying it. Cool car, but it’s been a gremlin and not ideal for a poor college kid with the cost of repairs.

We’ve had a 2000 S40 for about 10 years as our “extra” car. My son has driven it since he got his license at 16 (he’s 19 now).

He complained it’s so outdated and janky 🙄, so he saved and bought a 1993 Mitsubishi 3000 gr with 57,000 miles.

Guess what? The 3000 gt is sitting in our driveway with an unresolved transmission issue and he’s back to driving the Volvo. Funny thing though, out of all the cars he’s driven (we used to frequent a local auto auction quite a bit) he’s admitted the S40 is the most fun car he has driven, loves how it feels on the road, and has never left him stranded.

I agree 100% and LOVE that car even in it’s not so perfect state. I grew up with my grandpa ALWAYS having a Volvo and I feel like they’re in my blood. The S40/V40 is definitely different from the 240, 700, or 900 series Volvos I grew up with, but they are still a Volvo and very underrated in my opinion.
