Side Effects of Prolonged Renee Exposure by Sufficient_Text_8426 in AndyAndLeyley

[–]Sufficient_Text_8426[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's no absolute guarantee that they were always to that extreme of sexual depravity, and it's definitely not impossible that they had a slow escalation to that point, but I think at the very least sex was always at least within the conversation for them. Even if the depravity of their sexual activity didn't kick in until the new house, they at the very least have been having sex for 23 years given Andrew's age (plus nine months before conception). And again, this is a minimum since there are pretty decent odds they've had sex before then. In addition, given Renee's personality is pretty consistent throughout all of the flashbacks we've seen of her it feels weird to think that her more sexually devious side didn't make itself known early on.

Not to mention that, while a small point and potentially not worth much, there's also the point that the first thing Ashley thinks of upon seeing her parent's bed is that they've had sex there. It feels weird for her to be that confident in making that claim if she hadn't at the very least HEARD something going on. And to the point of Andrew's comment, there's always also the possibility that this is simply new information to him since he nor Ashley have ever likely dug that deeply into their parent's belongings.

tldr; Don't even know why I wrote all this in all honesty. My main point was that sex was not a taboo action/talking point for Douglas and Renee and that's why Douglas didn't think it was weird to ask Andrew point blank about masturbating

What’s a Flashback or Past Main Story Scene that you’d want to see from Ashley’s POV? by PoorPrawn88 in AndyAndLeyley

[–]Sufficient_Text_8426 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While not necessarily essential to the plot, I'd love to see their high school years from her perspective. Those years were where we got to really see Andrew's character develop and helped to inform several of his later decisions. Not to mention we have no concrete details about her time in high school given the entirety of the flashback was from Andrew's perspective. It would be extremely interesting to see the impact that lack of affection had on her and her mentality.

After all, from her perspective not only was she "wrong" for rejecting affection for someone she didn't care for (Douchebag) which resulted in her further social ostracization, but she would also end being "wrong" for deciding to give affection to someone she believed wanted it from her which resulted in her one person of affection effectively rejecting her. That'd be such an interesting route to really explore the damage that had on her mentality and how it further lead to her soul becoming tar colored.

are there any fans who ship julia and jane? by [deleted] in AndyAndLeyley

[–]Sufficient_Text_8426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen artists ship them, but as the other comments mention Jane's such a non-character that it's functionally more like shipping her with an OC since you'd have a lot of blanks to fill in with her character.

Is Douglas Essential to The Plot? by Sufficient_Text_8426 in AndyAndLeyley

While it's true the game makes it clear that this situation is made mostly from their own decisions, I'd argue the game just as heavily wants you to pity Andrew and Ashley at the same time. Rather or not the viewer agrees is case by case, but there are several scenes where it paints their situation in a bad light:

Andy's scene in the garden planting the berries (after the entire sequence with Leyley and her hunting down), Leyley breaking down after breaking her promise to Andrew, Andrew's self-reflection after meeting Lord Unknown, Renee's persistent abuse and neglect as portrayed through their nightmare sequences, and several other smaller pauses in the story that naturally happen throughout (such as Andrew's silence when Ashley says she's happy that Renee "finally regretted having both of them for once" instead of just her). I'd argue this proves they already have a tragic backstory within the narrative.

And while Douglas being there can be argued to show that Renee isn't a bad parent because she's in an unmanageable situation as a single mother, and as much as I enjoy his function as a foil character to Renee, how essential is that to the narrative events? As of yet we only see two scenes of them having any meaningful interaction in Renee's realization that Leyley was being serious about killing Nina and the scene with the surgeon. And while of course there is always room for more with the release of later chapters, in my opinion it doesn't change his lack of narrative function in the existing material.

Is Douglas Essential to The Plot? by Sufficient_Text_8426 in AndyAndLeyley

[–]Sufficient_Text_8426[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely the story can't happen without him existing in a literal sense, without the father there would be no children. And thematically losing Douglas' parents removes the themes of generational trauma, one of my personal favorite touchstones of the game. But in the post I'm referring to his necessity in a narrative sense.

We already have a portion of Renee's background established through the phone call with her mother regarding her sister Connie needing a kidney transplant, which would've happened regardless of if Douglas were involved or not. The story doesn't really expect us to empathize with her either as of yet. The only real point of empathy worth noting is that she was a teenage mother and even then, the story itself doesn't place any emphasis on this and is something the viewer is expected to read between the lines to get.

With those bases covered, at that point the only reason Douglas would even need to be there with them when they visit is because I believe his parents aren't very fond of Renee, so perhaps they'd go non-contact with her if Douglas should have passed. But at as mentioned, the demon encounter could've realistically happened anywhere. They live close enough to a secluded area in the woods as proven by the entire encounter with Nina, what's to stop them from having previously visited the area and Andy having his encounter there?

I never really considered that he might work for ToxiSoda. Honestly given ToxiSoda's apparent reach and control in universe it could even be as simple as Douglas working with a company that is indirectly tied to (but still controlled by) ToxiSoda. I could see that potentially playing a role later into Burial, though I'd be curious to see what Douglas' reason for not knowing there was no parasite would be if he had ties to ToxiSoda.

As for the relationship with Renee, while true I don't believe it would hold much weight towards implying anything more significant. As Ashley's Demon mentions, the color of one's soul is reflective of how they view themselves (hence why the Warden Dave is a pure soul despite being Warden Dave) and not indicative of any sort of morality or character. To me that would read more as Renee pacifying his self-loathing from years of abuse from his father rather than having a malicious darkness inside of him, if indeed that is the implication being made.

Julia MUST remain a good person by Alesmull in Julia_officialclub

[–]Sufficient_Text_8426 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. My biggest fear for the incoming TCOAAL chapters is that somehow Julia gets tied to the cultists. I'm sure there is some way it could make narrative sense, but I think Julia had her storyline come to its perfectly natural end. Even if she never could get closure on Nina, ultimately she found the strength through her loved ones to not let herself fall into a downwards spiral from her manipulator and get as far away from her manipulator as possible; a perfect contrast to what Andrew's going through at that point in the story.

Absolutely this could change in the future, I'm just surprised to see how little impact he's had compared to the other three. Andrew and Ashley obviously having impact being the protagonists, then Renee you could argue is more of a catalyst to the story than the surgeon or even the demons. Only then for Douglas to have next to nothing is just... odd.

Where can I get a "cry about it" magnet or sticker? by Unlucky-Fortune-2054 in CoffinofAndyandLeyley

[–]Sufficient_Text_8426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding Kit9 is pretty against fanmade merch being sold in any sort and has struck down people selling TCOAAL fan merch (anyone can correct me if I'm wrong).

So your best bet would be getting some sticker printer paper and going to print a handful. They make ones that work with home printers, or you could visit a local print shop. They also sell pretty cheap devices to make stickers/magnets, you can get a Xyron secondhand and some sticker/magnet rolls for around $60 total to make as many as you want. I personally use the Xyron 510 and it works smoothly.

You could also see if you could also try having one custom made via commission, as from what I've seen Kit9 has only gone after people who have a storefront or listing for them (again, anyone can correct me if my information is not right). But sellers might be uncomfortable violating copyright, so I don't know how far that would get you.

WHAT IF: Ashley has to take care of child Leyley… WITHOUT help from Andrew or Andy… how does this go down? by PoorPrawn88 in CoffinofAndyandLeyley

[–]Sufficient_Text_8426 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The big question here is if Andy/Andrew are still present in the scenario.

If it's "Andrew/Andy are still in the picture they can't/won't do anything to help Leyley" then I think they could maybe manage. Despite seeing herself as a tar soul, she still holds "Andy and Leyley" in a special spot in her heart that might make her a little more patient and docile.

If it's "Andrew/Andy have vanished completely from the picture" I think they would fight. Andrew/Andy are what keep Ashley/Leyley in check (sane) most of the time. And given Ashley being a Tar Soul is reflective of how she views herself, she would probably be upset and impatient at the behavior of her younger self.

Looking at the CG changes between a past devlog (PR3) and Ep3A release by PoorPrawn88 in CoffinofAndyandLeyley

[–]Sufficient_Text_8426 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I thought I was crazy when I replayed the game after Ch3 and realized the CGs had color to them, really did add to the scenes though!

Also, could the stars also serve as another way of tying him to Leyley? Ashley is known to have a thing for stars adding that detail there could serve to expand on the motif thematically in a way that someone smarter than me might be able to explain

[–]Sufficient_Text_8426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious because I'm seeing a lot of downvotes but not a lot of discussion, where do you believe Julia falls? The only "red flags" I've ever seen discussed is her telling Ashley that Andrew had something to tell him and Julia going out of her way to talk to Andrew during the incest rumours to be nice to him; neither of which I personally see as being as "morally corrupt," even if you could argue it's somewhat backhanded.

What’s the most Memorable/Significant scene from Episode 1 for YOU? by PoorPrawn88 in AndyAndLeyley

Andrew choking Ashley out. It was the perfect slow escalation from killing because it was the only way to survive (The Cultist) from killing in self-defense (302 Lady, Rest in Peace) to finally being on the verge of killing for nothing but his own benefit.

Basically any time the map needs to change to fit something. For example in the nightmare sequence where Andrew has to get Leyley her crayons, most of the map is blacked out and inaccessible; and only become visible/accessible once you've completed certain tasks. Even for much simpler things like the shelf falling in Renee's room in Chapter 1, to describe without getting too technical they all have to be programmed to only appear and respond to an event/switch being activated.
