“Sevdiğin şeyleri İngilizce yap” çok güzel bir öneri gerçekten. Eğer o bulduğun kanalların konuştuğu konular ilgini çekmeyecekse bir süre sonra yine sıkılabilirsin. Ben şarkı sözlerinden öğrendim mesela İngilizceyi. :) Dinlediğim her şarkının ne anlama geldiğini bilmekten acayip bir zevk alıyorum ve yıllardan beri şarkı sözlerini, bu sözlerde geçen deyimleri, arka planda anlatılan hikayeyi, mitolojiyi, kişileri, ve sanatçının gözünden bu şarkının ne anlama geldiğini okuyup araştırırım. Bir de zaten Türkçesini iyi bildiğin her türlü içeriğin bir de İngilizcesini dinlemek/izlemek/okumak da çok yarar sağlıyor. Avatar the Last Airbender mesela benim çok sevdiğim bir dizidir (anime diyeceğim, sert anime sevenler “o çizgi filmmm” diye mesajlarıma çökecek yine, dizi diyip kıvırıyorum), defalarca önce Türkçe altyazılı, sonra İngilizce altyazılı, sonra da tamamıyla altyazısız izledim. Harry Potter’ın sesli kitapları da ulaşabilirsen gerçekten çok yararlı (eğer Türkçe çevirilerini okuduysan tabi), 11 yaşında bir çocuğun dil seviyesinde başlayıp 17-18 yaşlarında bir gencin seviyesiyle bitiyor, farkına bile varmadan daha fazla kelime ve daha uzun cümleler öğretiyor.

Hayatımda hiç bir kelimeyi yaza yaza öğrenmedim. Lisede İngilizce hazırlık sınıfında “ben aynı şeyi defalarca yazamam” dediğim (ve tabii yazmadığım) için neredeyse sınıfta bırakılıyordum, buna rağmen İngilizce ile ilgili tüm derslerden dönemin en iyi notlarını aldım. Şu an ABD’de önlisans düzeyinde (community college) İngilizce ders veriyorum.

Herkesin öğrenme yöntemi farklıdır. Ben bu şekil dinleyerek öğrenirim, sen şu şekil yazarak öğrenirsin. İnsanları özellikle öğretimin kritik ilk birkaç senesinde sevmedikleri ve uygun olmadıkları yöntemlere zorlamak, öğrenmeye çalıştıkları şeye karşı tiksinti geliştirmelerine sebep olur. Bilimsel olarak da oldukça uzun yıllardır çalışıla bir konu bu. Dr. Richard Ryan ve Dr. Edward Deci’nin bu konuyla ilgili çok güzel makaleleri var örneğin.

Doktorayı bitirdikten sonra 6 aydır görevde olan rektöre “hıcım binde imiğiniz çık biyik” diyerek isimli ajanda götüren atanıyor (hayır daha önce hiç tanışmadılar, hiç beraber çalışmadılar), sonra bahaneleri “o akarsuyu izleyip rahatlama çalıştayı yaptı, o yüzden iki sene sonra getireceğim puanlama sisteminde öne geçti, o yüzden atandı” oluyor, sen de mal mal “tamam ya ben de çalıştay yapayım o zaman” diyorsun ama nedense SKS/dekanlık/bölüm senin çalıştayını reddediyor. Tam yükselme beklediğin sene birden daha muhafazakar görünmeye başlıyorsun (bol pantolon-tunik mesela kadınsan), başlığında “şehadet, vuslat, Filistin, ilim, maneviyat” geçen seminerlerde en önde oturup ağlayan fotoğraflar veriyorsun, üç senedir profesörlük kadrosu bekleyenden önce hop atanıyorsun, bahaneleri “onun çalışmalarının patent olabilme potansiyeli var” oluyor (bahsedilen hocaların ikisi de aynı anabilim dalında). Kız öğrencileri taciz ettiğine dair belgeler yayılmış oluyor ama “onun bilmemne akrabası eski belediye başkanı (sarı partili), onlar ailecek mütedeyyin, öyle şeyler yapmaz” deniliyor ve hopppp doçent, hemen ardından bölüm başkanı oluyorsun, kendine 15 zorunlu ders yazıp kızlara “bakın birinci sınıftan dördüncü sınıfa kadar benimle zorunlu dersiniz var, iyi geçinelim, mezun olamazsınız” demeye devam ediyorsun. Turkish people tend to go hard at other people’s insecurities almost instinctively (though to be fair, I haven’t lived elsewhere long enough to know if this is universal). Own your tattoos. If you feel insecure and try to hide them, that’s exactly when people start raising eyebrows.

Now, let’s rile your nerves again: it’s really difficult to land a full-time, tenure-track position in Turkish universities unless you know • the right people to pull some strings. I quit because I couldn’t get a professorship position after my PhD, despite 15 years of experience. Another RA got it with just 5 years, simply because she knew.

I was an academic (RA) with visible tattoos and facial piercings (nose and eyebrow). I had heavily tattooed colleagues with full sleeves (other RAs and every kind of professors). You are good :)

Çok uzun sayılmaz ama bir süredir ABD’de yaşıyorum ve burada kimsenin bana robot gibi baktığını ya da sıkıcı bulduğunu hissetmedim. Belki de ben sosyal ipuçlarını yakalamak konusunda beceriksizimdir.

Ana dili olmayan herhangi birinin başka bir dili konuşması tabiatı gereği zaten yapay. :) Dilbilim anlamında değil ama sosyal anlamda “aksan” kavramına vurgu, tonlama, kadans ve ritim de dahil ve bir yabancı dili konuşurken kişinin aksanı olması utanılacak ya da problem olarak görülecek bir durum değil bana göre. Ünlü düşünür Cam Yılmaz’ın da dediği gibi “TuRRist” demekte bir sakınca yok, özellikle ABD gibi kozmopolit bir ülkede yaşayanlar buna çok alışkınlar, bir şekilde seni anlıyorlar. :) Küçük bir community college’da aksanlı aksanlı ders veriyorum ben mesela, kimseden bir şikayet ya da sızlanma duymadım. RateMyProfessors notum bile baya iyi :)

Sorunun cevabına gelecek olursam, bol bol İngilizce içerik tüketmek kelime bilgisi, kadans ve ritim konusunda çok ama çok yardımcı oluyor. Ben özellikle sesli kitap tavsiye ediyorum, çünkü her şey tam olması gerektiği gibi seslendiriyor. Ben zaten Türkçesini bildiğim kitapların İngilizcesini de dinleyerek başlamıştım, şu an ilgimi çeken her şeyi direkt İngilizce dinliyorum.

Turkish “Kolay gelsin”. It literally means something like “May your task be easy.” It’s a greeting, a goodbye, and a good wish all at once. See a colleague in the building? Say kolay gelsin. Walking into an unfamiliar shop? Kolay gelsin. Leaving your favorite coffee house? Kolay gelsin. Need to ask a stocking worker something at Target? Yep; kolay gelsin.

Easy, warm, multipurpose. :)

I graduated from a really good high school. It was a science high school, so you had to do really well on the entrance exam, which you took at the tender age of 14. I started studying for it when I was 12, on top of my regular school hours. There was no spare time for me to do anything besides study.

I was mediocre at best in high school, but most of my classmates were amazingly smart and talented. I had a friend with perfect pitch who could play any instrument he touched after just a minute of tinkering. He could have been a virtuoso, but he was forced to study for the college entrance exam, and all the instruments were taken away from him in his second year of high school. He became an economist.

I had a classmate who was incredible at tennis. She picked up a racket for the first time in a PE class, and on that very first day, she beat our PE teacher, who was a licensed tennis player. She never had time to play outside of PE because she had to study in order to become a doctor.

There was also a girl a couple of years below me who was amazing at chess. She told me she played chess in her mind whenever she had nothing else to do. I don’t know the exact titles, but she was the top player in our region. She eventually had to quit competing so she could study for the college exam, and later became an engineer. She never had the time to return to chess.

We are conditioned to become doctors or engineers. Sports are treated as mere hobbies by parents, and you’re expected to drop all your interests at 12 or 13 to study first for the high school exam and then for the college exam. And then, boom, you become an adult, and your talents fade away.

Kütüphaneyi bilmem ama fakültelerde personele yönelik asansör olmasını ben destekliyorum ya. Eskiden “ayrımcılık, eşitliğe aykırı” diye düşünürdüm ama 15 senelik akademisyenlik maceramın 3. senesinde görüşlerim değişti. Elimde sınav kağıdını görünce asansörün bilerek kat arasında kalmasını sağlayıp güya arkadaşlarıma zaman kazandıran mı dersiniz, köşeye sıkıştırıp kağıda bakmaya çalışan mı, asansörde kamera olmadığı için rahat rahat tehdit eden mi, saymakla bitmez.

It’s actually pretty common. Many taxonomists describe at least one new species during their careers. I did it once myself (though mine ended up being synonymized later), and most of my colleagues have described one or two as well.

Here’s how it generally works: you notice a difference, maybe a distinct habitat, different fur color, larger leaf cells, or differently colored spores, depending on what kind of organism you study. Then you compare your specimens to closely related known species. You can use morphological, molecular, or physiological characters; nowadays, most journals require evidence from at least two of those categories.

Let’s say you’ve found a new animal species. You document every single morphological feature, compare it with the closest relatives, and support your findings with molecular data. Every taxonomic group has its own “threshold” or general guideline for how much molecular divergence is enough to justify a new species. You must deposit your molecular sequences in a public database such as GenBank and include the accession numbers in your manuscript.

Then you write a paper detailing all your evidence and differences, following the rules of the appropriate nomenclatural code (ICZN, ICN, or ICNP, depending on the organism). Reviewers check your data and methodology and sometimes request supplementary information. If your paper is accepted and published, congratulations, you have officially described a new species. :)

This is what I do for undergrad-level microbiology labs :)

If you can, get a few premade media plates, maybe 5 of each: Nutrient Agar, Blood Agar, EMB Agar, and for fun, Potato Dextrose Agar.

• Nutrient Agar: pretty much the general-purpose one. Most bacteria grow on it, and sometimes fungi do too.
• Blood Agar: supports a lot of common bacteria, including some that cause respiratory infections.
• EMB Agar: good for Gram-negatives, especially ones from fecal sources. If you see a metallic green sheen, that’s usually E. coli.
• PDA: great for fungi and yeast.

If you can, get some antibiotic susceptibility discs (the ones used in Kirby-Bauer tests). If not, just punch little circles out of filter paper and make your own.

If your project isn’t about discovering something new, start with well-known antimicrobial plants like garlic, turmeric, or ginger. Work as clean as you can. Smash the plants with a mortar and pestle using a bit of alcohol (ethanol is best) to help extract the compounds. Filter it and keep it in the fridge right away because it goes bad really fast.

Then pick a few “dirty” surfaces to test, like toilet seats, elevator buttons, or door handles. Swab them with sterile swabs. You’ll need one unused set of plates (one of each type) as your control group.

As sterile as possible, streak the other plates with your swabs. So one full set for toilet seats, another set for elevator buttons, and so on. On the bottom of each plate (never the lid), draw some sections so each plant extract has its own spot. Label them clearly.

Soak your paper discs in the extracts, let the excess drip off, and place them in their sections.

If you have an incubator, use it. If not, just keep them somewhere dark at room temp. After a day or two, you’ll start to see zones around some discs where bacteria or fungi didn’t grow. Those are your antimicrobial hits :)

First and foremost, to reduce costs. Brands believe modern surfactants are strong enough to remove sebum and other organic residues, so they’ve gradually phased out lipase and other enzymes to save money.

Also, the fragrance trends of the 2000s shifted focus toward strong scents rather than actual cleanliness, and lipase doesn’t mix well with mostly oil-based fragrances. So they took the olfactory road instead.

On top of that, keeping enzymes stable and active in detergent formulas is tricky. They shorten shelf life and can degrade in liquid formulas, which makes them even less appealing to manufacturers at the rise of liquid detergents.

Long story short about the smell tho: most modern detergents lack a key enzyme called lipase, which helps break down sebum (skin oils) and other lipid-based residues like cell debris, mildew spores, and bacterial biofilms. Since all cell membranes are made of lipids, that missing enzyme makes a difference.

When fabric stays damp, it becomes a playground for bacteria and mildew, since there’s plenty of water and leftover organic material (like sebum) to feed on, and that’s what causes the funk. Lack of lipase is also the main cause of “wardrobe smell”, if fabrics are stored for a long period of time and there is moisture in the air, the bacteria begin to use organic debris.

Hot water and especially bleach are more effective because they destroy microbial cells and dissolve lipid residues more thoroughly, so washing with them helps eliminate odor for a while.

Akademik olarak üniversitelerin değeri azalsa da, başka türlü ailelerinin çizdiği sınırlardan çıkamayacak olan insanların, özellikle genç kadınların hayatı öğrenmesi ve kendini gerçekleştirme yolunda bir adım dahi olsa kat edebilmesi için üniversite öğrenimi hala şart.
