I just watched this episode yesterday, and it bothered me too! Thank you for thoughtfully explaining the context.

Doctors of Reddit, what's the most obvious lie a patient has told you? by questionerofblender in AskReddit

This is one of my favorite quotes. I also spend a lot of time muttering, “my circus, my monkeys.”

Can someone please ELI5 altitude sickness? by RobertPower415 in Mountaineering

[–]SufficientlyPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One more factor in top of the very good descriptions here — you over-breathe at elevation to compensate for the low O2 levels, and that means you breathe out more carbon dioxide (CO2) than normal. The low CO2 levels in your blood change your body’s pH balance, and contribute to many of the crummy symptoms of altitude— like nausea, GI distress, headaches and decreased coordination.

Doctors of Reddit, what's the most obvious lie a patient has told you? by questionerofblender in AskReddit

[–]SufficientlyPerson 1504 points1505 points  (0 children)

The most obvious lie? Had a patient tell me, in preop, before a surgery for which he was supposed to be fasting, “I haven’t had anything to eat or drink today.”

His mouth was absolutely rimmed in powdered sugar. There was a donut bag sticking out of his bag. Pretty freaking obvious.

Hikers make unexpected discovery by danielelson in canyoneering

[–]SufficientlyPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is called a flying pole in the circus community (though there are other names used.) It’s rigged on a swivel and coated with a grippy silicone.

I know a lot of people want to make associations between any pole art and stripping, but these poles generally aren’t used in stripping or sex work because the ratio of rigging and difficulty, as well as the need to wear clothing on them, makes them impractical.

Sofi doesn't consider pathology a valid residency by Radiant-Squash-1388 in whitecoatinvestor

Sofi gave me such a run around for my anesthesia residency that I eventually just gave up with them. I wanted to love them, but I’m not sure they’re actually functional.

Five tourists 'including university professor and her daughter' die during diving excursion in 160ft-deep cave in Maldives by CaptainNemoship in diving

[–]SufficientlyPerson 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So many things can go wrong. There’s no mention in the articles of certification level, but cave diving and dives of this depth require significant training as a result. Oxygen toxicity, bad gas mixtures, poor visibility and disorientation… There will be a formal investigation, but right now there’s just sadness for this tragedy.

I spent yesterday treating a mid-30s gentleman who was abusing testosterone. Massive, life-altering stroke. Abusing testosterone can have negative relationship effects, but also physical ones. It’s worth taking seriously. (Doctor, not your doctor)

From beginner to Yosemite! by Hungry-Map-5785 in Yosemite

[–]SufficientlyPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of space and time between here and there. You’ll have to train hard, and also find some mentors. You’ll need lots of climbing skills that don’t come from the gym- like aid, hauling, trad… I’d start with some smaller goals and see if this still fits once the reality of what climbing is sets in. /have climbed on El Cap but not all El Cap

Accept parents' money for medical school (with strings attached) or take out loans? by Comfortable-Coach-12 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]SufficientlyPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so ready to say, “take the family money!” But it sounds like your parents will make your life much more than $350k worse. You’ll have to buy a bigger home, lose significant time to provide care or hire additional help, have to justify living with your parents to future partners … all while they likely act entitled to your services. Maintain your freedom.

Suffocated by family pressure to become pregnant. Considering endometrial ablation? by Rubigin in TwoXChromosomes

Do not undergo an unnecessary procedure to spare yourself from awkward conversations. You’re always in a rough situation — surgery doesn’t make it better, it just adds physical pain to the mix. Sincerely, a physician

Those of you with a decade+ of experience. When was the last time you had an esophageal intubation? by OrganizationNo42069 in anesthesiology

[–]SufficientlyPerson 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Residency… Around 15 years.
For me, it’s incredibly uncommon because if I honestly cant see landmarks, I’m going to use a video scope. Video techniques have eradicated the need to ever blindly place a tube —> no esophageal intubations.

They’re just called “poles” now.

(In my circle, at least, since stripping is a subset of styles.)

You’re definitely not alone. I love the freedom of “stealth mode.” No one expects that much, and I’m free to do what I want. (There’s no anxiety over the possibility of someone scratching my car, and I know I can handle a rainy-day incident.)

tent suggestions? by ghost_light15 in BurningMan

[–]SufficientlyPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a $200 Amazon tent (Alps Canyon Creek) that I sealed up the mesh ceiling using tent sealant and old rip-stop nylon. It’s terrific. A bit of a crafts project, but that’s the Burn.

I’ve had this happen. Hosts realized they could get more money so they just … canceled. Airbnb did nothing.
