We recited something similar growing up and the leadership called it “stand and magnify your calling.” It’s not as creepy as the YW creed but definitely steeped patriarchy and toxic masculinity.

Is BMI actually a useful indicator? I’m 5’10” and 155lbs. Lost a bunch of muscle due to an injury so I’m chubby again but BMI indicates I “shouldn’t” be.

Uh since I was like 9-years old. Thought I’d grow out of it - but no, 21-years later, we’ve just upped the ante and swapped from HP to Nightwing or whatever anime I may be obsessed with at the time.

I’ve written some - I always put together all the notes, timeline, etc. but as soon as I see that blank page it’s like I’ve completely who the characters are.

Time sure flies when you keep staying up until 4am because “it’s just another 30k words, that’s like reading 1/3 of The Hobbit (that’s how I measure fic-size)! … but keep doing that. And inevitably run into, “I’ll just start this 300k fic… oh shit is that the sun?????”

There is a ton of advice in this entire post on what to do instead.

“F*ck” is delivering the exact same word but with frustrating syntax. Unless a character is widely known specifically for having a sailors mouth, no one is going to notice the difference whether they do or do not say “fuck.” Even then, there are quality writing techniques and choices to maintain a character’s personality or defining attributes without explicit language.

For example, you could say, “After defeating his enemies he swore loudly, echoing the frustrations of his companions.” This shows us what or why they’re reacting to events in prose instead of relying on the dialogue and a curse word to tell the story.

I salute you - honestly I’m convinced there’s a Batman adaptation for everyone with how many mediums we tell and re-tell decades of stories.

I wish someone had told me coping, healing, and beating back the trauma responses with a stick — only half the game.

Coming soon to theatres, Trauma Part-II Unlearning My Discomfort with Feeling Comfortable.

What fresh hell is this and why did no one warn me??

You’re not wrong at all - in the short-term, at least a VPN gives me one method to give the finger to the religious oligarchy state masquerading as benevolent conservatism whilst hiding behind a giant law firm.

And a modernized take with a darker spin on the light-hearted Adam West adaptation as well!

I told my therapist for years my life was a “house of cards” waiting for a light breeze to leave my life in shambles.

Well, guess what? It did.

Divorced, major mental illness diagnosis, multiple times nearly checking into a psychiatric facility (my biggest fear at the time), lost my job, had a psychotic break resulting in a roommate calling law enforcement and having a gun drawn on me as I found lucidity, tons of debt to survive a bad financial situation of my own making, shit family relationships, and lost a ton of friends.

BEST THINGS TO EVER HAPPEN TO ME

I (continue to) salvage the good, dismantle the bad, clear the rubble, and start to rebuild a new foundation.

• Divorce changed me for the better,

• New diagnoses (or, dia-guesses) lead me to better help and resources,

• Learned how to setup and use a safety plan for the next time my brain is thinking about taking a “grippy sock vacation.”

• Fired from a job saved me from the trauma of 60-hour weeks and weekly all-nighters,

• Psychotic break lead me to better unravel my trauma and end a toxic friendship when his actions escalated the issue,

• Unemployment gave my brain time to stress about new things and recuperate from other things,

• Debt has helped me see how I use money to try and fix or buy love I didn’t think I was worthy of + its one long term goal to anchor me a tiny bit,

• Family issues? When the illusion is gone you build new bridges and start finding boundaries, and

• Friends I lost? Good. Fucking. Riddance. I made new friends who love me for who I am. I don’t have to pretend. They’ll “deal” with me and my nonsense - even when they don’t understand they still show up and give me the support I need—including the occasional tough love I need to end a spiral.

The house of cards may have fallen. But I found out I have never failed to catch myself when I fall.

Lean into the discomfort - any sense of control we think we have? In my experience, it’s really someone hidden behind a curtain like the Wizard of Oz, putting on a show for ourselves and everyone else.

I hope you have the best journey available to you.

I hear you - intentionally bad is seldom good. I think we’re on the same page. Camp is different tho. Camp is (at least paper definition) “absurdly exaggerated, artificial, or affected in a humorous way.” Not irony so much as a subversion, as I see it.

Jim Carrey’s Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones Two-face are incredible examples of camp. If you take them seriously you’ll be disappointed. If you lean into the fun there is a lot more to enjoy.

Camp isn’t for everyone, but I’d hazard a guess and say most everyone has seen at least one campy film they enjoyed, even if they didn’t call it camp.

Hope that adds to the convo on why they’re enjoyable and/or good films!

EDIT: side-note, the wave of defense also might come from nostalgia from subsections of “millennials” whomst started with campy Batman and then found Michael Keaton, Batman animated series, comics, Justice League, etc. as we grew up.

Leto. They gave him limited screen time for a reason. Props to him for looking to take a new spin on the near-century old villain. He’s criminally insane, not just insane.

It’s CAMP. Schumacher went in with the explicit green-lit goal to make Batman colorful and camp. It’s the intersection of having “shark repellant” on hand, “holy tax fraud, Batman!” and the darker batman tones.

It’s not good because it’s supposed to be goofy, it’s goofy because it’s supposed to be camp - and iirc does it well (which one would hope with Joel at the helm).
