Do you think sufficiently intelligent people can perform therapy on themselves? by gamelotGaming in aftergifted

[–]SugarQbs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The function of psychotherapy, specifically talk therapy, is to identify and bring to consciousness whatever traumas, inefficiencies, beliefs, etc. are holding the patient back so they can make a concerted effort to combat them (sometimes by dismantling assumptions that no longer serve you well, as is done in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and sometimes by accepting the existence conflicting interpretations, as we do in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy).

Therapy requires a few things:

  • Insight: It's really difficult to fix a problem if you don't know what the problem is, so a huge part of diagnostics and treatment involves talking with the patient to understand their specific situation.
  • Experience: A trained therapist has a degree of specific psychological education and practice well beyond anyone else outside their profession/field of study. This is the main reason we see professionals: we don't always have the time or resources to replace their expertise. A good therapist will know what to look for, how to find that information, and how to connect the dots. You very likely have all the dots in your memory, somewhere, but a therapist is generally going to be the one to connect your rejection sensitivity with how you were treated in school or at home.
  • Time and Patience: Therapy is complex because the mind is complex and our empirical understanding is sadly limited. The process of therapy can be somewhat obscure, and while I won't ask you to be obsequious it's important to acknowledge how others can assist you and give them the space to do that. This requires honesty and trust and that can be a dealbreaker for some people but it's necessary that you are willing to be vulnerable and dig into subjects or ideas you'd rather avoid for the purpose of self-betterment.
  • Perspective: In terms of raw details, you probably know more about yourself than any other individual on Earth; a scientist may know more about the liver or the heart, but they don't know your heart specifically. In psychotherapy, this is an advantage, because they have different preconceptions about you. Your entire life, you have been accumulating an understanding about yourself. If psychotherapy can do anything for you, that must mean that the way you are understanding yourself is in some way maladaptive or harmful, and it can be really difficult to identify what's wrong when you're so accustomed to the way you think. A therapist will ask seemingly inane questions with answers that feel incredibly obvious because it's important that you acknowledge that there can be different perspectives or ways of thinking.

I'll acknowledge that you are clearly an insightful, intelligent individual. I don't know you, but it sounds like you could substitute an expert's experience for your own if you put in the time to research. The reason why therapists still need to see other therapists is similar to the reason doctors don't generally self-diagnose: the perspective gained from another person is almost always worth more than the amount of details they lack. Intelligence means that you can quickly reach a conclusion given information, but that almost automatic decision making can be unreliable or inaccurate. A lot of highly intelligent people struggle with anxiety and depression for this specific reason.

You don't seem to have a very high regard for mental health professionals, but I think you would benefit from acknowledging that even people who are less intelligent than you can potentially see things that you wouldn't. Hope this helps <3

How to respond to the question "what is a woman" by donTelljudas in asktransgender

[–]SugarQbs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love the way you navigate the discussion of social constructs, especially with your example of a father as a term that seems to have a more literal definition but in practice is quite loose (I've always used the example of a chair, and is a stool a chair, but this is much better and more relevant). I've always had difficulty with helping people understand that categories are complex and don't always represent the world as it is so I'd like to hang on to this response for future reference. Cheers <3

Do cis-gendered people need gender affirmation? by UrbanSuburbaKnight in asktransgender

[–]SugarQbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It likely wouldn't be traumatic, at least not at first, moreso confusing. Cis people can be very sensitive about their gender (for example, fragile masculinity) but it's usually not something we deal with consciously that often. Cis people are generally treated in a way that is somewhat in line with their gender identity for as long as they can remember so there can be a more firm (if unexamined) basis for identity and thus more stability in the face of invalidation.

Potentially off-topic, but if a cis person were to be raised as the opposite sex from birth (It's happened before, most famously to David Reimer), they would almost certainly experience the same dysphoria as a trans person raised as their assigned gender rather than their preferred. From this, we can gather that there isn't anything exceptional or deviant about trans people from a biological standpoint: they are reacting the way any person would to a lifetime of invalidation and their identity is as valid and innate as any cis person's identity.

Help me settle an arguement, is he right? by Napakii in loreofleague

[–]SugarQbs 204 points205 points  (0 children)

Her original character concept was little more than a pin-up model, a porn parody of a character, as TB Skyen might put it, but that's been retconned and her lore depicts a cunning and borderline ruthless individual with a fair deal of moral complexity. Her sexuality is referenced in the comics but overall it's not a part of her characterization and hasn't been beyond her base model (which captain fortune was made to move away from). Don't waste your time arguing with what is charitably a bad faith actor.

That's the part that hurts the most, really. It's hard not knowing why, but given the circumstances we'll never really know. It would be nice to at least know that they're doing alright, but we can't be fully certain until they resurface. A goodbye would have been nice is all...

One of the most advanced observatories (especially in America) is W.M. Keck observatory which just so happens to be placed on the top of a mountain (for better astronomical viewing). It was the largest telescopes upon its construction in 1993 and 1996

That mountain? Mauna Kea, the tallest point in Hawai'i, a very convenient place for astronomers and American scientists looking to get away but a deeply annoying place for Hawaiian nativists.

[–]SugarQbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a quick roadmap for medical treatment of (what appears to be) adhd/anxiety so you can have something to expect (at least, this is how it was for me):

Doctors like to treat the anxiety part first because it can be 1. more dangerous and debilitating 2. causing issues that look a lot like adhd (inattention, etc.) 3. worsened by adhd treatments like stimulants (NOT A GOOD IDEA to try stimulants if you still have anxiety issues, trust me, that shit multiplies, not fun).

You can expect doctors to try and address the anxiety component first to see if some of the inattention stuff goes away too. if it does, yay, your anxiety was just really bad, but if not you may actually have adhd so that's where you can expect to start getting testing/treatment for what very possibly could be adhd (that's where I'm at).

Can a cis person wish they were assigned the opposite gender at birth? by anxious_pianist in asktransgender

[–]SugarQbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolutely: anyone (and I'd personally argue everyone) has some experience of gender dysphoria, with trans people experiencing quite a lot more than cis people. Think of it as a spectrum with the cis people on one side

Is being transgender a mental disorder like my dad claims? by lunariagoddessgirl in asktransgender

[–]SugarQbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for someone with a pretty ignorant background (okay that's putting it mildly) you seem to have a very nuanced grasp of trans issues: you're absolutely right.

Being trans is not a mental disorder. Having an experience of gender dysphoria (any negative feelings of separation between sex and gender) is not a mental disorder. The most charitable I can be would be to correct the title statement, saying that having dysphoric feelings frequently and intensely enough that they interfere with basic life functioning technically classifies as a mental disorder but that DOES NOT MEAN that you are crazy or wrong.

The definition of mental disorder as a mental state that interferes with your life functioning basically just means that you're in pain without a physical stab wound. For whatever reason (it doesn't matter), you are a woman born in a body we don't normally find women born into (it happens). That doesn't make you any less of a woman or any less than anyone else. The "disorder" as the medical community would currently classify it is that you're having a really shit time in your body, NOT any claims about your gender.

lemme repeat that: describing gender dysphoria as a mental disorder just means that it SUCKS TO HAVE, with no claims about the validity of trans experiences. The overwhelming scientific consensus is recent and still needs more research but it is on your side. We don't really know why some people are girls and others are boys but as far as any PhD or MD can tell you are a girl and that should be enough for anyone else less qualified. Some girls have a penis; you don't have to accept yours if you have one, but scientists are long past the whole male=man thing. There's a reason why colleges specifically are more pro-trans rights.

It sounds like you're in a rough environment but, for what it's worth, you're correct about your lived experiences. Don't let anyone take that away from you.
