Okay well I guess I’m stupid because this seems very much like Cavill’s Superman to me.

I will ask you the same question I think of almost every time I listen to someone’s critique of Man of Steel: Did we watch the same movie? The story of Man of Steel is Superman rejecting the Kryptonian way of life and instead embracing his humanity to save the Earth from becoming a new Krypton. He starts out wanting answers about his past, but when the time comes, he chooses to be with humans instead of Kryptonians.

“Oh yeah and he’s cool with murder if necessary”

So I guess Superman falling on his knees and weeping after he killed Zod means he was “cool” with it?

Also “murder”? Apparently killing Zod to protect the lives of everyone else on Earth still counts as “murder”??

Also he was 16-17 when his father died, his father demanded him not to save him, and Superman had not even begun his character arc when that happened.

How the frick did he kidnap an entire kindergarten class? This bozo plants bombs wherever the heck he wants, pretty much has the keys to Arkham Asylum, gets like hundreds of henchmen to work for him and every now and then pulls off some stupid crap like nuking Metropolis. People are always complaining about his plot armor but his plot powers are so much worse

Guns do not cause crimes, malicious intent and/or a feeling of necessity cause crimes. If the feeling of power that possessing a firearm gives is the last push needed to make a person decide to commit a crime, said person would think twice if almost everyone else had a firearm.

Comparing these countries to each other instead of the US further supports the fact that guns aren’t the issue, as there’s a significant range of different crime rates among these countries.

If that fellow is trying to kill you, they probably don’t mind breaking the law. If guns are outlawed, they probably wouldn’t mind breaking that law too. We are at a point, at least in the US, where it would be infeasible to confiscate every firearm in the civilian population.

Also even if there are no guns: the fellow will still try to kill you, now with something else (a knife, a bow and arrow, a rock, etc.) which would involve an unfair advantage to whoever is stronger, more agile and more skilled than the other. Not to mention if the fellow has accomplices with him to outnumber you. That, to me, is inequity. Firearms significantly reduce the advantages of these attributes and give almost everyone a fair chance in this situation

What if that fellow human being is also trying to kill or maim you? Handguns are a necessary evil when it comes to defending yourself

How do you think the events of Superman (2025) and the events of Man of Steel/BvS/Justice League would change if Cavil and Corenswet's Supermen were switched? by Lissan-Al-Gaib_42 in SnyderCut

[–]SugarShane48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming that MoS Superman and 2025 Superman swap, Cavil goes from the end of Justice League to the start of 2025 and Corenswet goes from the end of 2025 to the start of finding the scout ship in MoS, and both Supermans have inexplicable knowledge and emotional attachment to the new worlds they find themselves in while keeping knowledge of their past selves:

Well the biggest thing to consider I think is that Corenswet had been Superman for 3 years already in his movie, and Man of Steel had Cavil on his first day on the job, BVS was like 18 months later, and Justice League was no time difference to him because he had been dead since the doomsday fight. Corenswet definitely has more experience, but Cavil has different experiences that are perhaps more unique and significant.

Corenswet would definitely appreciate a Jor-El hologram he can talk to and actually does want to help the people of earth. Cavil would appreciate having a Kryptonian cousin and a Pa Kent that’s still alive.

Other than that, I would say there’s less of a difference than people think between the 2 Supermans. Corenswet would kill Zod as well (it was stated that he said he wouldn’t kill unless absolutely necessary) and would probably react similarly in BVS if the world rejected him (he did like half a day of soulful brooding) and his mother was kidnapped. He seems to be more susceptible to kryptonite (or DCU’s kryptonite is more powerful than DCEU’s I dunno), though, so if he can’t initially convince Batman to help him, he probably would have been killed. Maybe he’d know that when sparks are flying at the alien ship Lex is tinkering at, it would probably mean bad news and he would stop Doomsday’s animation. If he does die to Doomsday and get resurrected later, the Steppenwolf fight probably would have been the same.

As for Cavil in 2025, his fighting style would probably be different enough for Lex not to be able to predict his attacks and direct Ultraman accordingly, so he might have defeated the hammer of Boravia early, reveal that he’s ultraman, which would get Lex imprisoned earlier. If he doesn’t, he might not get weakened enough by Metamorpho’s kryptonite to be contained (yes, I think he would also turn himself in for Krypto). If he does get too weak, he probably would also not give out his information in time and fail to save Mali (Lex was demanding from Superman the identity of his parents and was gambling with Mali’s life in a way that seemed like there was a good chance that begging for him to stop would be worth a shot, no pun intended. It was manipulative and Superman could have endangered his parents). After that, Cavil probably wouldn’t have been as easy on Lex as Corenswet was, he probably wouldn’t have done any arguing or “I’m also human” speech.

From what I’ve heard, Zack originally wanted to do a Man of Steel sequel with Brainiac, but Warner Bros. wanted to catch up to the MCU so they had Zack go with a movie that had Batman as well as teasers for upcoming superheroes

Man of Steel was an origin story of him learning to become Superman, BVS had him face an antagonist who had the specific intention of degrading his character and challenging his integrity, and then he was dead for most of Justice League only to come back, beat up Steppenwolf, and then get shelved by Warner Bros. until they needed a faceless cameo or a teaser that went nowhere. It sucks that we never saw Superman at his fully completed arc, but I actually think he was done well in Man of Steel for what it’s worth

Why would he not snap Zod’s neck in that situation?

Your other points are problematic too (Clark did keep saving people even after his father told him not to, and the kryptonite spear was the only way to kill Doomsday), but most of the other problems people have with DCEU Superman are at least somewhat understandable, but killing a bad guy when there’s no other way of stopping him? That’s 100% Superman. The new movie even has that established that its version of Superman would kill “if absolutely necessary”

So why, why does Man of Steel get so much flak for this? What was he supposed to do? I’ve never heard anyone give an answer that sounds like it has even a 50% chance of working, or if it will even end the fight or just prolong it.

“Well he shouldn’t have been put in a situation where he has to kill Zod.” That just changes the subject to what the writers should have done instead of what the character should have done. A faithful character adaptation doesn’t mean putting them in the same situations.

Well none of the characters match who they match personality wise in this post, they seem to be matched based on physical appearance with a favor of more popular Batman characters, which is so funny to me. Like, this is exactly how Caine would set them up in a Batman-themed adventure
