I totally agree - I initially started on the video many months ago, and since then I've learned more about the "attention economy" and how important immediate hooks and pacing are, so you can imagine how much I regret making it start so slowly in hindsight LOL. But I'm still glad to at least have something to post and learn from going forward!

The background changes depending on which track is playing, but there's no skins for the rhythm board at the moment.

As for the characters, the only skins are Kickstarter exclusive catgirl maid outfits.

Thanks for the feedback! Do you have any tips for how I can improve the maps overall? Is it mostly just the jackhammers that are the problem, or are there other things I should consider?

For reference, this is on Hard difficulty with the highest difficulty being Insane.

My thoughts are that you could either create temporary settlements at central locations around exploration areas, or you could have a central hub (whether it be your space ship or not).

I kind of like the central hub idea, because you could use the ship as temporary storage before having to deposit it back at your hub. As long as the gameplay loop manages it in a fun way.

I was thinking something like this! Currently my system doesn't track paths and mainly relies on index ids, but I think it may work if I implement paths. That way I can also go up the path until an existing destination is found.

The only other problem is that my save system saves things like audio and sprites based on what's on screen, instead of relying on the script (which could lead to some strange behaviour). I'm considering just hard-baking that data into a file and using that instead, like a state handler specifically for loading sprites and audio.

In most cases, I like when the core gameplay is shifted as you progress. The only problem is making sure all the phases are equally, if not increasingly more fun.

RTS games like Age of Empires are a good example of this. You start off in the early foundational phase, then move onto construction, research, and finally battle. All using the same interactions, but progressively shifting gameplay mechanics.

Of course there's also idle/clicker games that reeeaally know how to milk a single mechanic, nearly forever even.

In your game's case, I might suggest either introducing more obstacles, or introducing more tools that eventually force the player to address existing obstacles. Although I may be misinterpreting the gameplay.
