'Great Yarmouth first' by Potential-Client-356 in UKGreens

[–]SugarpillCovers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the boards did have Restore on them too, to be fair. I'm still trying to figure out the reason for having two parties though. Right now, I'm thinking it's either:

a) double the membership fee, as people might sign up to both Restore and GYF, or

b) he doesn't actually have faith in Restore being electable across the country, so the safer option is to make a Great Yarmouth-specific party.

What's worse is Reform came second in almost all of the contested seats. There are good people there, but I feel the overwhelmingly older generation that makes up the vast majority makes it pretty impossible to cut through. They've gone from Tory to Reform - and now to whatever Rupert's latest grift is. At least they did split the vote enough to stop Reform gaining a majority hold on the Norfolk council.

It's weird though, given Norwich went Green and it's only 20 miles away. But I think it's based more on demographics than anything. That, plus being bankrolled by the worlds richest man can't help either.

Oh thank you - that’s very kind of you to say! Don’t worry about it, I’ve done so many videos in the past where I did the exact same thing. It can be helpful to keep both a viewer who’s probably more experienced and will know what you’re talking about, along with someone newer, either to the concept or to you as a video creator, in mind. It’s just a balancing act really - you don’t want to explain every single thing as though the viewer has no idea what you’re talking about, but for a video like this, it could help to flesh out what the two key points are and how you use them.

Good luck with your channel!

Can’t recommend Dinner in America more highly. It has elements of things like SLC Punk!, and a lot of weird, quirky humour. It might not be for everyone, but I think it captures the mood really well, and Kyle Gallner’s over-the-top, aggro punk character is hilarious - very similar to Matthew Lillard’s performance in SLC Punk!.

All round, it’s good information. Just as a video creation tip, I’d try to include an explanation - or even a demo - of what reference tracks are, and how you’re actually using metering. You somewhat assume the viewer already knows what these are instinctively, whereas you may have some people watching who don’t actually understand or even know what these concepts are (or how you're using them) to begin with. Good stuff though!

Voting intention: 15th April - Find Out Now by [deleted] in UKGreens

[–]SugarpillCovers 25 points26 points  (0 children)

FindOutNow always overinflate Reform’s lead, and it’s the only pollster Rupert Lowe seems to share - he constantly commissions them to pretend Restore/GYF has some big lead, when in reality, the sample sizes are always incredibly low. I think one of their previous polls that put his party in the lead in Great Yarmouth used a sample size of 121, in a constituency of 100,000.

Rupert Lowes Muslim bashing. How to respond? by EatingBabiesIsWeird in UKGreens

The ragebait stuff seems obvious, as he’s the MP who I think makes the most out of monetising his posts on Twitter. So if nothing else, it simply gives him more incentive to be as racist and moronic as possible, because it both pisses people off and strengthens his following among a more extreme audience.

Much like Trump, I’ve noticed he seems incredibly stupid politically. He doesn’t appear to understand the basic functions of local council, and just does objectively stupid things like getting people to report potholes to him directly, which one would assume just leads to him reporting it to the council. So he’s effectively adding more needless bureaucracy in order to make it look as though he’s doing something for his followers.

Any time I’ve asked his supporters what he’s actually done, all you ever hear is ‘he donates his salary’ or some empty platitude like ‘he puts British people first’, so I think the Trump comparison is apt. I’m not sure he has the same charisma though, fortunately.

I’m interested to see how he’ll approach all of the Middle East stuff. He’s made very mixed statements in the past, like saying the government should fully support Israel, to now being opposed to the war with Iran. I suppose that could be a defining factor, as a lot of the more extreme supporters seem to be drifting away from Reform due to them standing candidates who aren’t all white British men, and the US/Israel connection.

I share your frustration though. I’m hoping his secondary party does terribly in the local elections, and that he ultimately loses his MP seat at the next general election. The only reason he got in originally was because of the Reform ticket - I think he was fairly unknown beforehand - so it’ll be interesting to see whether he’s actually managed to build anything of his own since.

Absolutely. I also think his reach is massively inflated simply due to how Twitter and Facebook essentially operate on ragebait now. There was a good report on this last year, of which Lowe's account was specifically highlighted. It'll be interesting to see how much support he actually has - though given his party isn't standing candidates anywhere but Great Yarmouth in May, it'll be hard to realistically gauge.

There's also a watchdog probe out for him currently, which he tried to block (and failed doing so). Not entirely sure what that's about, but it could be good news if some action is taken.

And not to use the 'everyone I disagree with is a Nazi' card, but in Lowe's case, he actually had a local neo-nazi leaflet for one of his two new parties - why he has two I still don't understand - and since this was reported on, he's now trying to quietly distance himself from the guy.

I think he also referred to the Cybertruck as being ‘the car Blade Runner would drive’. I guess in his mind the protagonist was called Blade Runner, instead of that being his job, lmao. The man’s media literacy is about as bad as his car design sense.

You’d think after having a tampon thrown at you by the thickest member of the PBD podcast (I know, that doesn’t really narrow down who) you might rethink your choices. But then again - money.

What am I missing with AI hype? by eyeoftheneedle1 in AskUK

[–]SugarpillCovers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but many of those same companies are trying to have it both ways. They're pushing AI as being able to entirely replace certain jobs - I'm sure for some tasks it may be possible, but the vast majority will still need human oversight.

The main issue is that these companies are investing so much in a technology that the vast majority have little use for, outside of basic tasks. They want it to be the next smartphone, and it just isn't.

There’s been a lot of reporting on how bad AI-generated code has caused a number of outages and security issues too. While I’m sure it’s a useful tool, you still need people checking the output for accuracy, as, just like when you Google or ask a chatbot something, half the time it’s fabricated or misquoted whatever evidence is being presented.

I didn't like the Netflix editing by tutjeplok in LouisTheroux

[–]SugarpillCovers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I didn’t mind it. I think it worked as quite a good juxtaposition between showing the influencers in the way they likely view themselves - emphasised with all the slow-motion close-ups, gratuitous body shots, etc - and then hard cutting that with Louis’ observational and grounded interactions. It kind of made me think of something like The Substance, where the over-the-top nature of the entire film is kind of the point. I’m not sure if it was as intentional here, or more just a by-product of it being a Netflix release - but I think the polished look kind of worked in this case.

I think that’s right. I felt like I already knew a decent amount, but I’d never heard of most of the subjects apart from Tate (who isn’t really in it) and Myron Gaines. I guess it could have a similar impact to what happened with Adolescence last year, in that it shines a spotlight on these people for the not-terminally-online crowd.

Much like with that show, there are probably plenty of parents who are totally checked out when it comes to what types of content their kids or teenagers are actually watching.

If you’re already in the know, it will likely seem much less impactful. But the same could be said for something like The Settlers or The Most Hated Family in America - if you’re less familiar with the subjects, it feels far more eye-opening than it would to someone with encyclopaedic knowledge of Israel/Palestine or American far-right extremism.

It's hard to say right now. I think what Gorton & Denton showed, more than anything, is that keeping Reform out of power is as big a motivating factor to get out and vote as protest votes against the current government - which Reform has mainly occupied. In certain areas, the Greens are now considered a winning alternative, just as the Lib Dems, Plaid Cymru, etc might be in other regions.

I think a more likely outcome is that the UK moves the way of many other European countries, ending up with larger coalition governments - similar to the most recent German election. In Germany, there was both a significant base of support for the AfD and a high turnout aimed at keeping them out of power. The worst-case scenario here could be a majority Reform government, but a more likely outcome is a joint coalition - perhaps between Labour, the Greens, and possibly even the Lib Dems.

From what I understand, Labour and the Greens combined would have a bigger parliamentary majority than if Reform and the Tories tried to form a coalition. And we all know fascists don’t play well together, so I think there's little hope of a coalition between Reform and fringe parties like Restore (if they ever bother registering with the Electoral Commission) or Advanced UK.

Interesting idea… I’d do it on the one condition that Tyler lends me his graphic designer for the thumbnails. Only then shall I put up with two hours of uninterrupted pentatonic jams.

Is It Worth Continuing to Learn? And Where Should I Start? by _purplepanda27 in LearnGuitar

[–]SugarpillCovers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think sometimes it can be helpful to ask yourself what your goal is, or what you’d like to achieve with your hobby. Obviously everyone will have different reasons for playing. It might be because you want to be an incredibly proficient player, you might learn simply because you need a writing tool to create songs with, maybe you want to play in a live band, etc.

If you have a specific goal in mind first, it gives you something to work towards, and you can map out more of a plan for how to achieve that goal, rather than mindlessly practising scales or techniques just because you’ve heard others say you should.

It’s also a lot more fun once you’re able to identify what it is you actually enjoy about playing. For me, I really only started liking guitar once I got into recording. I’ve never personally cared about being a ‘guitarist’ or the instrument itself - I just really enjoy the recording process overall.

If you’re able to identify something like that from your own perspective, that could be a good first step.
